As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Highlights of my Day... Thursday, December 20

1. Started off my day with our end of the year staff meeting at Dankook in which we talked about the next year's curriculum and student reports. Next semester they're going to kill us with the huge expectations they're pushing for student grading. Oh my gosh... I don't even want to think about that right now!!!

2. One of my coworkers made a pretty big announcement today during our staff meeting; he's leaving us soon. I consider myself extremely blessed for the staff that I work with, they're all really great and everyone definitely brings something different to the table. But "him", he's definitely one of my favorite co-workers. He's the only Korean prof. I work with and I love his attitude. He's a small Korean man who kind of acts like a gangsta... hehehe. He's always pinching and pushing me in the staff room. He always comments when I change my hair or make-up, and just a really cool mellow dude. He didn't say why he's leaving, he just mentioned that it's "for personal reasons".... dang. I'm going to miss him. He was my little Korean gangsta man.

3. Student interviews continue today for the fourth day this week but surprisingly I'm really having fun with it. Sure it leaves my brain feeling totally fried at the end of the day, but it's been really interesting to hear their answers and see just how different they become when they're put in the "hot seat", as I called it.

4. This week many of my students have been acting like paparazzis, taking random and multiple photos of me... hehehe. Today two of my students, Jae Myoung and Young Ha, turned our exam time into a kind of impromptu photo shoot. I had my simple digital camera with me but Young Ha had brought this super-duper, totally high-tech camera that I'm sure captured every single detail... oh gosh... hehehe.

5. Got the third degree at weight training from Buff Boy who argued that me punching Mr. Dong was an unfair fight. He argued that because I am a professional boxer and thus obviously know how to fight, that it's equivalent to one man using a weapon and another using only one hand; it's already a guaranteed unfair fight. I suppose he's right. Mr. Dong is around 35 years of age and doesn't exactly work-out. I'm sure he probably spells gym "j-i-m". Hehehe... sorry, I really shouldn't say that. I know it's kind of mean of me.... so what. The guy was a total jerk.

6. It's not that I enjoyed hitting Mr. Dong though, that's not the case. I really didn't want it to get to that point but I had tried numerous measures to try to stop him. Punching him was not cool. Feeling like I was totally ready for that moment, a fight, and being able to control myself from not continue punching him, that was cool.

7. Did some grocery shopping. I didn't realize that they had already closed when I walked in but I thought something was strange when I noticed that I was the only one walking around... hehehe. One of the workers approached me and motioned that I have to go to check-out now. I wasn't really done getting my stuff though and so as we walked to the check-out, I was grabbing food left, right and center... hehehe. I felt like I was on some kind of old skool shopping spree game show.

8. My weekly grocery bill:
9 packages of chicken breast
7 cans of tuna
7 cartons of eggs
3 packages of cherry tomatoes
1 lettuce head
2 large cucumbers
3 packages of peppers
3 large green peppers
9 sweet potatoes
2 packages of jello
7 yogurts
2 cartons of milk

9. If you think this is a lot of food, maybe I really shouldn't tell you that I eat out a lot too but still manage to gobble all this food up... hehehe. I've really tried to monitor what I eat when I do eat out though. Korean food is awesome for dieters though considering the fact that they serve like a million and one veggie side dishes with their meals and Korean street vendors sell such foods like boiled eggs and sweet potatoes. It's those bakeries, like Paris Baguette, that kill me though. I tried to totally rule out grain products but oh how I love those soft warm pastries. I walk by Paris Baguette everyday and the aroma seems to so conveniently seep through the store doors and flood my senses.... ohhhhh... ahhhh. So delicious!

10. Cracked under pressure today... I bought a bag of butter dinner rolls at Paris Baguette! I returned home and between the time I bought them and arriving home, I had convinced myself that I shouldn't have bought them. Gave them ALL to Mi Nam. He loved them.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Why does it have to taste so good?

I, too, was surprised you punched him. And then posted about it without even writing that it was an unfair fight. Without even reflecting on your actions.

But it proves boxing isn't a martial art...we're taught that you only ever use your skill outside of tournaments or the studio if absolutely necessary. And from your description, that was not at all necessary. Being pissed doesn't make your reaction correct or good. And laughing about it now shows you still don't care that you were a bully.

I've never known of any black belts in ANY art getting into fights like that. I know one man used to come to my old studio, years before I trained there. He got into the habit of going to bars and getting in fights. One day the master beat him up to prove how unfair it was that he was doing that.

It's also very, very illegal in Korea and you two are foreigners. I'm surprised you weren't arrested.

Iwould also NOT be surprised if you didn't embarrass and lose face for your Korean friends. A WOMAN getting into a FIST fight with a MAN? You think you distinguished yourself from him as foreigner. Yes, he's the drunk asshole and you're the violent woman who can't control yourself.

I know you're thinking, "No, my friends thought it was cool, Koreans thought it was cool, they paid my tab" but I also know you've been here long enough to know that Koreans will go through a lot to hide their opinions if they are in any way uncomfortable. And hell, they were probably scared that the crazy waygook would punching them.

In many ways, that was just plain dumb.

Hell, my Korean boyfriend sitting right next to me (who also reads your blog) thinks I shouldn't even reply because you'll get very violent in your answer. Oh, and he thinks you're scary and probably hit your students.

You are always under a microscope here. Unfortunately, you can't forget that.

Take that back.
amy would never hit her students.
She isn't scary either.
What is scary is that you think bad of her.
How can she get violent in answer?
Jump through your computer screen?

fighting with drunk people is stupid--

You may think you're being anonymous, but I know who you are, and I'll bet Amy does too. Just be courageous enough to say what you want to say and own it.

There's nothing wrong with giving your opinions. Unless of course, they're based solely on what your Korean boyfriend thinks. Try not to base all your beliefs about Korean people on him and the way he thinks and acts. Although Korea is a homogenous society whose people share many of the same beliefs and ideals, you're still lending to stereotypes by assuming to know how they think and feel. In fact, it would be better to hear from your boyfriend than you, if you are going to insist on trying educate us on what Koreans are thinking and feeling.

I apologize for this comment, Amy. I usually do not respond to idiocy, but know-it-alls really get under my skin.

To Ms. Not-so-Anonymous,

First and foremost, it WAS NOT a fight and, besides me really not wanting to get into the details, I tried MANY different things to stop him.... calling waiters that never showed up, verbally trying to talk to him, physically trying to push him aside... etc., etc.

But you're right... I do beat my students, I beat my dog, in fact... I beat my boyfriend too! Yup, I'm student-beating, animal abusing, husband-beating woman. Oh please, come on. What's wrong with YOU!

And as for your boyfriend being scared of me... it's probably jealousy, not fear.... seriously!

Yo K.,
Relax. It's cool. We can't all be cool. There will always be haters and people who are quick to point their finger at others. Like my teacher always told me though, every time you point your finger at someone, remember, there's 3 of your own fingers pointing back at you.

Hi Beloved,
Thanks for the back-up. At least if YOU were to drop a comment like hers I'd consider it. I've known you for some time now. You're comments have more weight than some random chick who's got nothing better to do on a week night than shake her finger at me.
And ya, I totally know who it is. She left major hints... the black belt comment was a sure pin-pointer.
I could care less though. She really doesn't know me nor does she know the full situation. But I love it how she called me violent and scary. I'm a bully?! Ok... whatever.
How ironic that SHE call ME that.
Like I always say, "Damn chicks always stir drama... that's why I date dudes!"... hehehe.
It's so true.
Why she even reads my homepage when she makes comments like this is beyond me.... ya, real smart.
