As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Highlights of my Day... Wednesday, December 26

1. No such thing as Boxing Day in Korea and so hitting the stores for it was a no-go. Sure, they've got sales on right now but they're really no different than the ones they had before Christmas, unless that is, you're looking to buy cheap Christmas cards... no thanks.

2. Headed to the notorious soonda-bo jigga restaurant for their famous dish that always hits the spot... I love it! It's a toss-up between soonda-bo jigga and cheese tak galbi as to what is my favorite Korean dish.

3. I'm convinced that Korean food is a dieters dream, especially at this restaurant, for the very fact that they bombard you and overload your table with so many veggies. Veggies I've never even seen before! Today's veggie side dish count was 10. And then, of course, there's all those veggies in the soonda-bo jigga (tofu soup)! Delicious.

4. Q and I headed over to the bank. I had to wire money to FedEx. Ended up getting stuck sitting beside a super smelly dude. He smelt like either a dead cow or a rotting pig. We couldn't quite pin-point the animal but it was nasty. Q thought it was funny... that is, until I pretended to start to vomit on his pant leg... hehehe.

5. With one day left to finish my marks before my students will be eagerly signing online to check them, today I was definitely feeling the pressure. I came home, worked on them a bit and then met up with Q again... Suk Jae Party #3.

6. Q cooked up a feast for us and so we fueled ourselves up with some good eating.

7. Then, we got down to business.... marking... SOOOO much fun, ya right.

8. Dankook University uses relative grading and I can't stand it, seriously! According to their relative grading system, a maximum of 30% students in one class can get an A and only 40% can get a B. You don't have to give any As or Bs though and, in two of my classes, no one got an A and only a couple got a B. However, the complication comes when you take a class, like my Monday 3:20pm class, where more than half of the students rocked and earned Bs. In that class of 35 students, only 14 can get Bs but, according to their earned marks, 18 of them got a B. So... what do I do?! Do I bump up some to an A or do what Dankook expects me and push down some of them to a C?!... quite the dilemma, as I'm sure you can imagine. Regardless, it's not fair. A B-student should get a B, a C-student should get a C.

9. Being put in this awkward hot spot with having to make a call on what to do with my marks and the relative grading, was definitely not comfortable... to say the very least. And, in the end, it took me a big chunk of my evening to decide on what I thought was the best judgement call. I don't feel right tampering with the marks but I don't really approve of Dankook University's marking system. Finally, I decided that if some students were one or two points away from getting an A, I gave them that A cause giving them that A meant I could give another student a B, instead of having to bump them down to a C.

10. Tonight Q's "point" definitely was raised after he WILLINGLY spent 2 1/2 hours counting up ALL my student marks while I figured out some of the "details" of certain student marks.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
What's the point of relative grading?

QUOTE OF THE DAY...
