As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Highlights of my Day... Saturday, February 16

1. Headed off for weight training at Hongik this morning. Cranked up my tunes on my Ipod, jumped on the treadmill and off I went, working up a sweat and busting my own butt.

2. Today Newbie asked me why I never turn on the TV when I am on the treadmill, you see, every treadmill has a flat screen TV in front of it for us to enjoy. But in the two years that I have been coming here, I have never turned on my TV. So I told him why, “I stare into the TV and pretend they just announced my name for me to come step into the ring.”.. and it’s true. I pretend that all eyes are on me, the lights are down, the announcer in the middle of the ring has just called my name and so the doors open up and out I come, making my way to the ring. I know it sounds a bit silly, I know, but it seems to keep me pumped and focused.

3. Hye Min mailed my sports bra to my boxing club and so I was happy to finally receive it. No sooner had the delivery man arrived but I was jumping up and down. My not-so-secret admirer was there and so he was all curious as to why I was so excited. Needless to say he had quite the giggle when he realized why… hehehe.

4. Broke-in my new Adidas boxing boots…. Sweet! They felt awesome!!!

5. As I finished up training, Junior Mint told me to weigh-in… minus my shirt. At first I thought I misunderstood him but then he repeated himself. So, I took off my shirt and weigh-in wearing nothing but my sports bra and training pants. I felt rather shy and so naked. Turns out I might be fighting in ONLY my sports bra and boxing trunks… no shirt. Oh gosh. And to think, some of my former Eumbong students will be there watching me. Boy are they going to be shocked to see this side of me… hehehe.

6. After training I was exhausted… totally exhausted. I waited around for Junior Mint to finish washing the towels but ended up passing out on the couch. It was only 6:30pm but I had just spent the last 2.5 hours training and so my energy was in the minus numbers.

7. Met up with Q. We went to the bookstore and then to Coffee Bean where he read his new book and I studied my Korean… or so was the plan. We ended up getting into quite the discussion. I just couldn’t focus on my studying and felt so light-headed.

8. My former co-worker, Mr. Ju, swung by Coffee Bean to buy a ticket off me for my game. He and my former partnering teacher, Mrs. Jung, are both coming to my game.

9. Not a day goes by that I am not bombarded by people telling me I have to win my fight… I know, I know. Mind ya, I don’t really know how to answer them or respond to their comments. The best response I have come up with is, “Yes, that’s the only schedule I have… winning!” Today it really started to get to me and I got so nervous. My opponent on the 23rd, well, this is her first professional fight, as it is for me too, mind ya, I have no idea on how long she’s been fighting as an amateur boxing. She may have years on me and tons of experience. This upcoming fight will be my first real fight outside of my sparring practices… and thinking about this tonight really freaked me out. I’m not afraid of getting hurt, I’m not even afraid of losing the game for my own sake, and I really don’t care what others think of me anymore cause until they step in the ring, they’re words really have no weight, however, what I am afraid of is disappointing Junior Mint. I have to win this game for him. He deserves this.

10. Late in the evening, Q and I decided that we were going to do some late night grocery shopping followed by a late night taste-test... Heinz Ketchup vrs. LotteMart's super cheap no-name.... hehehe.

Hey Amy,

You say it will be your first real fight? Didn't you have any amature bouts in Canada, or don't you count those?

I know you are imagining that this girl might have a lot of expeience, but based on my boxing career it doesn't always matter. I had a fight once when I had only a year of experience and the girl I was boxing had 4 years. It turned out that she was terrible, in the four years she spent boxing she sparred with guys (who were doing defence only), so she wasn't used to taking a hit. It was TKO in the first round. The bottom line is that it isn't always the length of experience, it is the quality.

From your blog, it seems like you are training at a really great gym and getting wonderful experience, even if it hasn't been in the form of matches, your training will have prepared you. Regardless, you sound like your ready and I wish you the best of luck.

Hey Chelsey,

I had TONS of fights in Canada, mind ya, those weren't exactly in the ring, nor were they scheduled fights... if you know what I mean. I was quite the scrapper in university when I was working as a head bartender.
I hear ya about the experience thing. I guess the cliche, "It's not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog", is kind of appropriate for this conversation. I think heart and passion really have a lot of say in things.
You TKO in the first round?! Wow.. that's awesome girl! Congrats.
Ya, my gym is really awesome. My coach really loves boxing and believes in me, so that really, REALLY makes a difference. He definitely teaches from his heart and is much more than just a teacher.
Thanks for the support... very sweet and much appreciated! ;)

Hi Vbuuren,
Thanks ;) Yes, I am really big into visualizing and image training. A lot of people don't understand that playing a sport isn't just a physical thing. It's also a very emotional and mental thing.
As for my keyword... any suggestions? I have a keyword that I joke around with my coach and team mates but it's not the nicest. Whenever they step in the ring and look to me for motivation, I tell them "kill". It's kind of a joke. They don't speak much English (that's an understatement) but they understand that word. But it's kind of appropriate because outside the ring, it's a game. We're all friends and smiles, but in the ring it's a fight. We don't step in the ring to make friends, we step in the ring to win, take victory and make the other person our victim.
