As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Highlights of my Day... Monday, September 29

1. My first class of the week kills me. I don’t know whether it’s because it’s at 9:20am on a Monday morning, everyone seems to hate Mondays, or what but every week this class sits there starring up at me. Thankfully I’ve got this one particular student. He’s older than the others and his English rocks and so I depend on him to get me through the lesson, after all, he’s the only one who ever answers my questions. Getting the others to talk is like pulling teeth.. quite painful.

2. By the time first period ended, I was able to breath again knowing that the rest of my week is a breeze compared to this class.

3. Got into quite the discussion with some of my second period class students. We were talking about what activities they’re into and, as it turns out, one of my students is a very successful kick-boxer. Another student jumped into our discussion during break time, telling us that she just started taking hapkido. We all had a good giggle at the fact that there the three of us stood and yet, looking at our smiley cute faces, you’d never guess that we’re fighters. Got invited to come watch a kick-boxing practice by the one boy. He trains out in Seoul but I just may drop by, I think it’d be really interesting to check out.

4. A bunch of my male students showed up dressed to the nines today… wow. One wore a suit, another wore dress pants and a vest, and two others wore white blazers and crisp new jeans. As the girls of the class walked in, they gave these particular guys the double look and, oddly enough, I felt kind of proud. It was such a strange feeling. I guess it goes back to the fact that on many occasions I feel like a kind of older sister to many of them. I suppose this was one of those times.

5. I love running into students outside of school and today I ran into a pack of my female students when I was at the grocery store. They were buying milk and crackers when they spotted me. It was hilarious. All at once they shouted out “Professor Michelle!!!” and came running over to me. Their yelling totally caught me off guard and so I dropped a bag of apples, sending them flying all over the grocery store floor.

6. I ended up treating the girls to banana milk and some of my favourite crackers. When we parted our ways, I turned back to say goodbye and they again yelled out my name, made heart signs with their hands and a couple of them yelled out “I love you!”… hehehe. Gotta love Korean students… very cute!!!

7. Headed over to the club for my usual daily boxing training. I went in earlier than usual and ended up running into Mr. Anti-Social who’s even more anti-social than me. No one ever talks to him, I don’t know why either though. Come to think of it, besides the occasional grunts he’s sent my way when he caught me looking at him longer than I should have been, I’ve never heard him talk. He’s about 26 and word has it he’s eagerly wanting a fight… you and me both, I thought to myself. Not too sure why but it obvious by the looks he gets in the club that no one is particularly fond of him but with his Fabio Korean rock star hair, chiseled bad-boy body and strong jaw line (see… I told you I looked at him too long), he’s actually quite a big chunk of eye candy. Mind ya, in my world, a 57kg man freaks me out considering I weigh-in at 53kgs.

8. Trying to talk to Mr. Anti-Social only scored me a dirty look and a cold shoulder, running into him accidentally when he was in the change room, oh gosh, scored me quite an earful… not to mention quite an eyeful too!!!

9. While doing my abs workout, Junior Mint sat down beside me and started to ask me questions about my date yesterday. He knows all too well about my life and if there’s anyone that I spill my beans to, it’s him. He joked about setting up a “meeting” for me and so I started to tell him what kind of guy I like… and then it hit me; I had just described Q.

10. Got asked to go to the movies tonight by some friends but decided to stay in, not knowing that the movie I was about to see would kill my beauty sleep and kill my nerves. Ended up watching a movie called “Darkness” and it left me tossing and turning all night.

QUESTION OF THE DAY…
Did I just lose something great?

QUOTE OF THE DAY…
The trouble with using experience as a guide is that the final exam often comes first and then the lesson.
