As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Highlights of my Day... Friday, July 31

1. Early morning training, and by early morning I mean 9am, consisted of Kitty Cat and I heading off to my boxing club to work out together.

2. Morning training with Kitty Cat was followed by afternoon studying Korean at Coffee Bean while she worked away on her online course she’s been doing. And for the record, if my Korean teacher gets mad at me for falling short with my Korean diary writings, I totally blame Kitty Cat… hahaha.

3. Snickers arrived at Coffee Bean to whip me away. I had planned to head out to Little America to see D-Boy tonight but plans fell through and well, honestly, I wasn’t so disappointed. Curling up on the coach with my gorgeous man is hardly a runner-up kind of plan but instead is quite the amazing plan. Turns out he had other plans though and so my couch-curling-up plans were quickly stomped out.

4. Lollipop, Snickers’ best bud, had taken a couple of days off work and had anticipated Snickers and I joining up with him and his girlfriend for a little get-away. I’m cool with hanging out with Snickers’ buddies but I really could careless to meet their girlfriends. For starters, I have much more in common with Snickers’ buddies because, for the most part, they’re all boxers. Then there’s of course the whole awkward “what do I talk about?” issue with the girlfriends when I already think I really have nothing in common with them. I really didn’t want to go on this little get-away. I’m still sporting my purple eyes and although my pride is bouncing back, I feared being thrown to the girlfriend for the trip. We’d have the whole numerous “what do we talk about?” situations followed by lots of silence and strange looks when all we both really wanted to do was hang out with our own boyfriend.
5. Ah the things we do for love. Snickers gave a huge “thank you!” when I agreed to go on this get-away so I told him “save the thank-you’s for the end of the trip… you’ll need a lot of them” and on that note we packed up and left. We had a 1 hour subway ride out to Lollipop’s house and then that was followed by a three hour ride out to where we were supposedly staying. I liked the subway ride because it was just the two of us and he told me the story of how he met Lollipop. They were cell mates and so I hope, for his sake, he remains friends with Lollipop till death due them part. In my eyes, Snickers has such an inspiring Cinderella story. From his coach teaching boxing at the jail for 25 years and then stepping out to start his own club with him, to Lollipop and Snickers sparring and then sitting back-to-back half naked in a cell just to keep warm in the winter, I am continually fascinated by his life stories and how he’s come so far from where he’s been. He’s still growing too, I can see that. He’s going to go far and when I try to wrap my brain around it all, I feel filled with pride. He is my pride of Korea.

6. Turns out we had no place to stay and there were no real set plans in the first place. Lollipop and Snickers wanted to go fishing and that was about it so we drove for hours and tried to seek out a motel to crash in. Snickers and I giggled away in the back seat, he constantly trying to steal my kisses.

7. Finally we scored a place to stay the night and had arrived. The boys headed off to do some late night fishing and I was thrown into the anticipated “what do I talk about” situation when they left me at the hotel with Lollipop’s girlfriend. Turns out it wasn’t much of a problem like I had thought it’d be cause no sooner had we arrived but she fell asleep, leaving me wide-eyed and bored senseless.

8. Turns out $50 gets you a ghetto motel room with about a zillion blankets but no toilet paper. I decided around 2am to go in search of some but ended up getting somewhat lost and had to resort to “natural toilet paper”. Korea doesn’t have poison ivy, does it?! Anyways, turns out No-Where-Ville has no 24 hour convenience stores.

9. What started off initially as a walk to buy toilet paper turned into a two-hour tour with me killing my phone’s battery with text messages to Canada and trying to find Snickers. I thought it’d make Snickers’ night by searching out his fishing spot but, like mentioned in the above highlight, I got lost. Thankfully my Papa Bere gave me some of his “smart cookie” genes when I was born and so I had anticipated this by making a picture map, snapping shots of random things I past while walking. Getting back to my motel was simply a matter of going through the photos and retracing my steps.

10. I never did find Snickers’ fishing spot but instead returned to a very, very spooked Snickers. According to Lollipop, upon arriving back to no Amy in the motel room, Snickers grabbed his phone and bolted out of the motel room, running at full speed and with Lollipop yelling out to him. Snickers grabbed me in his arms and I swear I thought my head was going to pop off when he wrapped his arms around me. He looked sick to his stomach and didn’t say much. I cut the silence by saying “I’m sorry” and he responded with “I know, never say never… never again do!”

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Are we not like two volumes of one book?

QUOTE OF THE DAY...
Soul-mates are people who bring out the best in you. They are not perfect but are always perfect for you.

Hello Vbuuren,
Yes, it was quite the eventful ending to a very long evening. Snickers is a hopeless romantic like that.

Hey Cat,
Ya, mine either. Note to self: if I go on another couple trip again make sure it's not with a couple of nuts or that I at least know the nuts!!!
