1. Nothing quite levels out the age gap than pulling out the old “pull-my-finger” trick… hahaha. Snickers thought it was hilarious. Yup, we are definitely comfortable now… hahaha.
2. Morning running at La Sya. Morning running was then followed by morning napping. Had an extended nap that lasted about 4 hours.
3. Napping was then followed by boxing. It was only a month ago that I had my last fight and so, having trained for everyday for that fight and then upping my training and going non-stop for this fight, I’ve had limited days off training. I’ve been going hardcore with my preparation training for this upcoming Saturday fight, training 2-3 times a day. I’m happy that I’ve tapered out my weight training because it was leaving me sore in the mornings and making me slow in the ring. Needless to say I’m looking forward to this upcoming Friday when I’ll be getting my first day off since I got scheduled this fight. Friday I’ll be going in for my official game weigh-in and then will be getting my game hair done later that evening.
4. But until Friday, it’s go-go-go with my training and today was definitely no exception. Upon arriving at training, still all sleepy-eyed from my long nap, I was then told to gear up for sparring practice.
5. I usually like a good heads-up with sparring, as in giving me a day's notice, but today I was given no notice and I felt in no condition to spar. Regardless, I geared up and stepped into the ring. Junior Mint had asked one of the High School Kiddies to come in early today to spar with me. We were supposed to go four full rounds but in the second round it was brought to an end when I took a mean left jab and came back with a cruel left hook that totally took my opponent off guard… and off his feet. Last time this same situation had made me proud but today it made me feel relieved. I had come into training exhausted and so I really had no energy to go the four full rounds plus do my pad work, sand bag training, more shadow boxing, more skipping, and ab training.
6. On the other side of town Snickers was sparring, too. He had sparring later on in the evening and so Junior Mint, Black Skinny and Panty Boy Jr. headed over to his club for sparring. Junior Mint insisted I come watch but I can’t stomach watching Snickers fight…. anyone else sure, but Snickers no. As a result, I was a no-show.
7. Snickers showed up at my house after sparring and I felt sick when he looked up at me. His left eye was red and starting to swell. I treated him to a light dinner out but watching him spit up blood into his napkin wasn’t exactly how I had hoped to spend my evening. Upon arriving back at my house, I spent the next couple of hours massaging the left side of his face with ice. He tried to make me smile by joking about it but his jokes came to a pause when I blurted out "it's okay... you'll get your turn to do this to me on Saturday." Wrong thing to say to him apparently. Snickers totally supports me with my boxing but has been urging me lately to make this upcoming Saturday fight my last fight.
8. Snickers had taken a good beating during sparring and so I headed out to La Sya for running by myself while he veggied out at my apartment.
9. With it being Snickers’ birthday tomorrow I had planned a little surprise for him, but because of him and I both having fights very soon, we can’t exactly go and celebrate his birthday like we’d want to (dinner, cake, etc.). We had agreed to wait till after his Monday game next week to celebrate. Today I finally finished his birthday gift but now I have to wait for it to arrive and so I got him another gift, to kind of hold him over till his birthday date. Snickers has been drinking Cola in efforts to suppress his hunger because of having to drop crazy weight for weigh-in and so I thought it’d be funny to make a special order with a local shop owner for two cases of Cola. Snickers usually sticks around my house after training and so I had arranged to have the Cola delivered at 1am and my friend to show up at 4:30am. The plan was for us to load his two scooters up with the Cola, head over to Snickers’ house, and set up a massive line up the mountain where he does his usual 5:30am run. At the end of the line I’d be sitting there wearing a cute polka-dot dress and holding a birthday card for him. He’d be so surprised and I figured that it’d be a great way to start his birthday off.
10. Plans foiled though when I arrived home from late night running and found Snickers all cuddled up and totally passed out in my bed and with the delivery kid about to show up and my friend texting me to confirm our early morning plans, I then had to come up with a quick back-up plan. I had to get out of the house so that I could make some calls and some how sneak in all that Cola. “I have to go walk Mi Nam” I told him. He insisted we go together but I managed to convince him to stay put, which definitely was not easy considering how he always insists on helping me. Anyways, once I got out of the house, Mi Nam and I then ran over to the shop where I had ordered the Cola, in hopes of intercepting the delivery kid. Mission accomplished. Now the problem was sneaking two cases of Cola into the house and setting it up without Snickers waking up… mission also accomplished. I felt like such a sneaky cookie… hahaha. In the middle of my floor I made two massive hearts using the Cola bottles and in the middle of the hearts I then placed a card I had written in Korean. As I laid down beside him, I couldn’t help but give out a little giggle, knowing that I had pulled it off and tomorrow he’d be waking up to quite the funny birthday surprise… hahaha!!!
QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Coke or Pepsi, what's the diff?
QUOTE OF THE DAY...
Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.
-- Chili Davis
As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).
After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.
Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.
