As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Highlights of my Day... Friday, July 10

1. Am struggling to sleep lately. I usually get up a couple of times each night to brush my teeth and to chug a glass of water but I usually have no memory of it besides the empty water glass but lately I’ve been waking up numerous times, falling asleep ultra late and waking up super early.

2. Pre-game nerves have officially arrived and so zoning out has begun, daydreaming about game possibilities, and even the sound of the round bell constantly fills my ears and sends chills down my spine. One minute I'm super giddy and overly hyper with excitement, the next minute I'm filled with fear and thinking to myself, "What the heck am I doing?"... all for the love of the sport. But you know what, it's all worth it and I love the pre-game nerves, gitters and all the hardcore training that's required.

This is the calendar at UP Boxing Club. It lists any upcoming fights and so everyday I stare at it with anticipation while gearing up for training. It reads "Amy vs Jang Yoo Jin... Soon Hwi Kwan [my team mate] vs Lee Ge Sang... Bo Chun Sil Nae Fitness Center [the location of the tournament]".

3. Rushed off to Snickers’ house to watch his human documentary again with him and K-Gere. Today K-Gere’s girlfriend joined us and then made us lunch.

4. Grocery shopping, or doing anything for that matter, with Snickers is always amusing and never a simple task. Today he had me literally bent over in pain from laughing after we downed 1/3rd a jar of mixed nuts and then he put it back on the shelf and grabbed an un-open one for us to buy… hahaha. Such a trouble maker… hahaha. Well, at least it means things are never boring.

5. Today was apparently a day of reconition for me as two local students came to the boxing club looking to interview me, some random call-food dude whom I ran into in the elevator recognized me from TV, and then some local high school kids standing at the light with me called out my name and asked me when my next game is. Very cool. I’ve been getting a lot of recognition lately because of the game I just had a month ago but ironically I’m still very much disappointed about that game. It wasn’t the win I had anticipated and so my nerves for this next fight are sitting on end and are keeping me up late at night.

6. And no, it’s not just a game… don’t dare say that unless you want to be picking up your teeth.

7. Today’s schedule pretty much went as follows:

7am – stairs training
7:30am - shower #1, eat meal #1
8am – sleep
10am – wake up, watch Snickers’ on TV, and eat meal #2
12pm - go grocery shopping
1pm – return home, eat meal #3, and sleep
3pm – wake up, eat meal #4 and clean the house
4pm– boxing
6:30pm- return home, shower #2 and eat meal #5
7pm – sleep
9pm – wake up and study Korean
10pm– running and weight training
11pm - shower #3 and eat meal #6
12am – study Korean
1am – sleep

Me sporting my sweat shirt. As you can see, it's a plastic material that traps your body heat and definitely makes you sweat... like an animal!!! Underneath it, I'm wearing a tank top and a long sleeve shirt.

9. Snickers and I both came to an agreement today that we need to be seeing less of each other, for the sake of needed to maintain a clear focus on our upcoming games. I hate the idea already but I know it’s necessary. By "seeing less of each other" we agreed we can't continue our daily multiple visits and late evenings. I usually see Snickers 3 times a day and for hours on end and I’ve been pretty good with staying on track with my training but lately Snickers has been sleeping in and missing his morning run. Unlike me who’s right on target with my weight requirement, he has about 6kgs to lose in about 2 weeks. He can’t exactly get away with cutting corners on his training, even if he says his fight is a for-sure win. As for me, this next game is a biggie for me and marks the end of 4-round fights. After this game I’ll be fighting 6-round fights. Got word that I scored home corner for this upcoming fight and so I’m totally stoked about it. I may be marked as the underdog for this fight and be stepping in with way less experience but it’s wicked to know that KBC has granted me home corner. That’s awesome!

10. My day, or night I guess I should say, ended with more training. Headed over to La Sya with Snickers for running and weight training. Apparently I’m a big hit with the dudes at the gym who many of which have felt compelled to question Snickers about me and ask to watch my next fight but I definitely got some bad vibes tonight from two particular girls who, and this is the flat-out honest truth, really were in no position to make fun of my body considering. I really don’t care what body others sport as I am by no means close to my own personal target goals with my body but when you go poking fun at mine and stand there giggling when I’m clearly bench pressing more than your boyfriend, I really question who should be the one laughing. Props to one of the La Sya trainers who apparently is a fan of mine. He and I have our daily chat, usually after I’m done abs and he’s the only trainer there that I care for. Tonight I overheard him slip in “she’s a professional boxer… watch out” while chatting to the two giggling girls. Snickers and I laughed about it afterwards and he told me that next time I should just whip off my clothes and join those girls in the shower. Give them a full show of what they supposedly think is funny and then ask them if they still care to giggle away at me.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
What's body are you sporting under your clothes?

QUOTE OF THE DAY...
To keep the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.

Stealing nuts?
haha
I bet the guy at the store didn't find it too fun to take care of it.

You do realize that if you and Snickers ever have a kid, that kid is going to be such a trouble maker! Be prepared for early gray hair as I am sure you probably caused your parents.

I don't even know Snickers and yet I'm jealous of him.

Sounds like you're training hard, good luck Amy! Do you typically taper your training as the fight nears closer?

Hi Anonymous,
Yes... he stole nuts. We're nuts about nuts... hahaha. And ya, I'm sure the worker dude wasn't too thrilled about it.

Yo J.P.,
Yes, yes, yes... I'm so aware of that... hahaha. Our kid would also be a sports fanatic and a pretty cool boxer, too ;)

Hi Anonymous,
Hahaha... thanks, I'll tell him that ;)

Hey Aaron,
Training hard is definitely an understatement. As for tapering my training, I only do so just days before the fight. Usually I taper off my weight training about a week before. For my last fight, I went hardcore right up to game day though because of the brutal weight target I had to get down to.

Why don't you just tell girls like that to screw off? I'm sure Snickers could teach you some pithy phrases if you don't already know lots.

I gotta say I don't find your stealing funny or cute. Maybe you had to be there.

Hey Amy,
I used one of those sweatsuits in college during softball to sweat off a little weight. It drains your energy and if you use it outside in cool or cold weather make sure you go in and dry off. I got the worst cold by sweating outside and not going in to change into a dry top of some kind. I'd forgotten about that.
It makes you sweat like hell though that's for sure.
