As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Highlights of my Day... Thursday, August 20

1. Heading over to Dankook to talk about a change in my schedule that I so longed for proved to be quite pointless in that I had picked the one day, apparently, that the assistant who had made the schedule was going to come into work late. She had some stuff to deal with regarding some of the new professors and so she was off doing that while I got all fidgety waiting at my office.

2. No worries… with one phone call to a higher-up gal I got my schedule changed. Sweet!!!

3. Meet up with that one student I’ve been helping prep for her speaking contest. Her contest is tomorrow and so she showed up quite stressed but ready to get down to business. I’m confident that she’ll do well and I tried to urge her to enjoy the experience. She’s an intelligent girl with a lot of mature ideas which is perfect for the questions she might possibly get asked during the contest/interview. Her main strength is with what she says but her weakness seems to be how she says what she wants to say. When she’s nervous she talks too fast and too choppy; it’s like her mouth has to stop to wait for her brain to finish processing what it wants the mouth to say. She’ll do great though, I’m sure of it. Correction, she’ll do amazing… I know it.

4. On account that this week marks me moving into my new home, I haven’t been to boxing for the past two days and don’t anticipate to return to it till next Monday. I haven’t not boxed this long since… hmmm… I don’t know when and I am missing it too.

5. Today started out loaded with frowns and an equal amount of rain. Snickers had arranged to have his best bud come from out of town with a truck to help us out but we had called off the arrangement on account of the rain. We had no tarp to cover up all the boxes… but wait… someone did! Money may not solve all problems but it definitely help and so today I hired a moving truck and a mover to help with the big move.

6. Most of my stuff in Sambu had been packed up and sat ready to be moved but I had ran out of boxes and so that’s where the mover came in handy. They had sent us an older man to help us with the move and, as it turns out, he was so perfect for the job if not better. He loved the whole Korean-man-foreigner-girl couple Snickers and I have going on and so we chatted the hours away while we slaved away at moving.

7. On our way out of the parking garage with the truck loaded to the brim with my stuff, I ran into one of the Sambu workers, an older man who does security at Sambu. He had noticed that I was moving and wanted to come out to talk to me. He asked me why I was moving, where I was moving too, and he topped his million of questions off with asking me if he’ll ever see me again. “Sure” I told him, “My friend lives here so I will make sure to say hi to you whenever I come by” I added. Am hoping to make my rounds this weekend and say goodbye and thank you to the two other older men that work at Sambu and who have continually been overly sweet and kind to me. I’ll miss them.

8. There’s one in particular Sambu man that I really am fond for. On average I’d say he says hi and chats to me about 4 times a day. He’s even kissed Mi Nam. Sometimes he tries to speak English to me but I’ll never forget the one time he stopped me on my way out the door and said, “When you don’t say hi to me in the morning I cry.” I’m not too sure who or how he learned that English sentence but I thought it was hilariously cute.

9. Today was definitely a busy day and I apologize for the total lack of pictures but it got lost in the suffling of the boxes when we loaded the truck. It wasn’t until much later that I found it.

10. By the time 11pm had arrived both Snickers and I were exhausted. We had packed everything in Sambu and had unpacked all but my clothes. Tomorrow we plan on “attacking” the massive clothes pile that sits taunting me on the floor… hahaha. Snickers headed over to Sambu to walk Mi Nam for me. You should see the mess we left at Sambu… yikes!!! We haven’t prepared Mi Nam’s new roof top house yet and so he’ll be living in Sambu by himself for the time being. I miss him already.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
What do you see in your future?

Hi Vbuuren,
Yes, busy is definitely the word of the week. We will be so happy once all the furniture is here.
