1. First day back to school in two months and so I was rather giddy stepping into the taxi today. I always love the first week of classes and no, not because they consist of a simple meet-and-greet that lasts about 10 minutes (well, who am I fooling here?! … that’s a sweet bonus) but because everything seems so fresh and full of possibilities. No first impression is really made yet and it’s the starting point for the rest of what can either become a really fun and successful class or a class that wakes you up with frowns. Thankfully I only average one class a semester that gives me weekly frowns.
2. Just like Kitty Cat had forewarned me, I had to have my temperature taken as I entered the university today. I then had to wear a green sticker to symbolize it.
3. Showed up for my first class, it was an English speaking class, and there were only 3 students enrolled in it. Only two out of the three showed up. Turns out I’m not the only one with dwindling class numbers on their attendance sheets and so on account of too many professors, too many classes and not enough students to fill these classes, several classes will be canceled as of next Monday.
4. Two of my classes are in jeopardy of being canceled. A Monday class of mine only has 2 students and one of my Wednesday classes only has 3 students enrolled. This would mean that my 16 hours of weekly teaching will drop down to 12. I take it they’ll leave my other Wednesday class of 13 students alone though considering usually under 10 students is the cut-off.
5. I love walking into the first class of the new semester and seeing familiar faces. I have a pretty good “following”, if you’d call it that, of students who continually search out my schedule and enroll in my classes and today six of them showed up for my writing class.
6. Walking around on campus consisted of stiff legs and me wondering why the heck I went so hard at morning weight training today.
7. Morning weight training was then followed up with afternoon boxing and then evening natural weight training in the park.
8. My morning training and then evening training proved very successful and effective but boxing, on the other hand, proved to be quite the opposite.
9. Today’s boxing marked my last time training at Snickers’ club, or at least for awhile. I like his club but it frustrates me to no end. His coach never does pad work with me (and rarely does it with Snickers for that matter), I have no chances to spar, and I feel like I’m not learning anything at all besides the fact that I miss UP Boxing Club, I miss Junior Mint, I miss Little Miss Sunshine and Tang, and I even miss all the high school kiddies, too. For the first little bit when I started training at Snickers’ club, his coach was all up in my face but that only lasted for the first week, if that, and so it’s frustrating because I know I have a lot to learn and a lot I want to improve on but how can I unless someone takes the time to teach and show me. I mean, I’m a teacher so what good of a teacher would I be if I simply showed up to class and told the students to teach themselves. Same goes for a coach. Just like a teacher who is expected to teach, a coach is expected to coach. It’s not brain surgery. Anyways, tonight I packed up all my equipment and brought it home with me.
10. The Building Tool’s hubby gave Snickers and I a whack of grapes today. Snickers thinks they’re trying to be all neighbourly and whatnot but it seemed more like a peace offering to me, or better yet, a “don’t-make-our-dog-out-of-the-much-deserved-football-he-deserves-to-be” bribe… hahaha.
QUESTION OF THE DAY...
How do you know what you know to be true?
QUOTE OF THE DAY...
I find four great classes of students: The dumb who stay dumb. The dumb who become wise. The wise who go dumb. The wise who remain wise.
-- Martin H. Fischer
As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).
After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.
Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.
