As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Highlights of my Day... Wednesday, October 7

1. My first class of the day consists of 17 super cool students who make for a super chill class together. I tell ya, they all rock!!! Five of my former students are in this class and so they’re my mid-week picker-upper.

2. Five minutes into my lecture with my medical students I thought something funny was going on with my earring. I thought it was caught in my hair but with 39 pairs of eyes on me while I taught, I tried to avoid it. Turns out it was a sticker in my hair. The university has been doing mandatory temperature checks because of the swine flu and so after you get your temperature checked, they make you wear a sticker on your clothes. Turns out my hair wanted to wear my sticker but I was so embarrassed upon realizing this. My face turned beat red and so I joked with my medical students and asked them why they let me go on for about 2 hours without telling me. “Because you looked cute!” was they answer they gave me – thanks, hahaha.

3. In my level two writing class I had them pick an event in their life that ultimately changed them and so it got me thinking about my own life’s events.

4. I’d have to say the fight I got into when I was a head bartender was the event that changed my whole life. As a result of the vicious fight that left me with a broken hand, one of my friends introduced me to Egerton Marcus, an Olympia silver medalist boxer who shortly there after became my coach, mentor, and great friend. I initially started to box as a means of self-defense but then it took off when I picked it up again here in Korea. I then stuck around Korea longer so that I could continue to see where boxing would take me. Well, it took me to the doorsteps of some very key sponsors, like the Cheonan Trump and Adidas, it put me in the media spotlight, and then it lead me to meet my soul mate – Snickers.

5. Ran into Tang at boxing. I haven’t seen him for awhile and so it was great to catch up. Our conversation started with him being a smart-alleck and blurting out, “So I’ve seen you’ve washed your hair… you really are in love!” Apparently the level of cleanliness of my hair is what he uses to judge how happy I am… hahaha. In my own defense though, I must note here that I no longer do the don’t-wash-my-hair-for-days scene anymore on account that I am no longer on holidays. Well, that and the fact that training twice a day definitely leaves me desperately needing some shampoo action.

6. Having Tang at the boxing club with me meant he could help me talk to Junior Mint about the issue of immigration and needing some kind of contract from the boxing club. Junior Mint and I are both unsure of what exactly needs to be written in this contract that immigration is demanding from us but so is immigration. Immigration even admitted that my case was the first they’ve encountered. Great, even they don’t have answers and so Junior Mint and I are
stuck trying to figure this one out before immigration does.

7. Looks like I might be getting married well before I had anticipated.

8. Hanging out at the hospital like I’m a fellow patient, or piece of furniture sounds more like it, is a daily routine I’ve been doing for the past two weeks and so of course I went there tonight. Mind ya, my usual taxi drive over was quite the eventful one tonight.

9. I flagged down a cab and no sooner did I jump in and close the door but the driver cranked up the tunes. Little did I know, karaoke taxis are now the biggest craze here in Korea apparently… hahaha. He asked me to pick a song. I argued that I wasn’t a good singer but he insisted I sing. In the end, I ended up making a deal with the driver. “I’ll sing a song any English song you want but you’ll give me a discount on my ride.” He made me sing an Elton John song… hahaha. Scored two bucks off the four dollar ride, sweet.

10. Tonight’s hospital entertainment was provided by two drunk men outside the hospital, one of whom decided that he’d be a tough guy and kick some random dude’s car. Police showed up, dragged him to the side of the road and then he passed right out.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
