As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Highlights of my Day... Saturday, April 3

1. Tears of laughter dripped down my face today after Mark Wallburge made his way on our TV screen via a movie that Snickers was watching. I started tell Snickers a bit about Mark and made it known to Snickers that Mark Wallburge is related to Donnie Wallburge, a member of New Kids on the Block. That’s when Snickers spontaneously broke out into a New Kids song.

“Step by step, ohhh baby. Going get to be a girl” is what he sang.
“Step by step, ohhh baby. Gonna get to you girl” is what he should have sang.

2. With Black Skinny out in Japan at his fight, Snickers and I waited eagerly and impatiently by our phones for any word of the result.

3. While Snickers went out running, I went strolling down the river path with Mi Nam. And of all days for people to actually want to touch him (which they like never do) today Mi Nam decided to jump into the river. Mind ya, him jumping into the river didn’t stop many students from trying to get his attention and take pictures of him. I think I liked it better when they thought he was a scary beast of a creature that would bite them because at least then they didn’t try to feed him chips and junk food.

4. Much later in the day I got word from Junior Mint. Black Skinny had lost. It was a good matching of boxers though considering their stats and whatnot. I felt bad for Black Skinny but we all, him included, knew he was going into this fight with more than just his opponent going against him, and props to him for that.

5. Did some grocery shopping at Lotte Mart. Snickers filled up on mandu free samples while I must had tasted a dozen different yogurt samples – strawberry yogurt, kiwi yogurt, chestnut yogurt, and sweet potato yogurt.

6. Homesickness hits me at the most unexpected times and is caused by some of the strangest triggers. Today homesickness seeped into my day and it was caused by none other than not knowing what to wear. Snickers mom wanted us to come over for a visit, so while Snickers quickly showered, I sat on the bed with my closets open and starred at all my clothes. A purple shirt caught my eye. It reminded me of the purple housecoat my mom use to wear around the house. I took the shirt off the hanger and hugged it. Viola, hello homesickness.

7. To tell you the truth, I am both super excited but rather scared to see my mom this summer. I haven’t seen my mom, or any other family member for that matter, for two years but last year was a huge year for my mom. I’m scared I won’t recognize her or that seeing her will bring upon loads of guilt for not being able to see her through her unexpected trip to Hell and back with cancer.

8. It was Calla Lily’s birthday today so I headed off to her party with a cheesecake in hand while Snickers spent time with Mama Kim. Calla Lily sported a cute dress for her party and many of her friends showed up. Some of them played Wii while others chatted and munched on munches.

9. Calla Lily definitely has one of the cutest mini-dogs but that dog is so confused as to what it’s name is… hahaha.

He thought it funny to steal all the balloons and then send me home with a couple tied to my wrist.
Chilling with fellow Cheonanites ;)

So beautiful... and ya, the flowers are beautiful too.

10. Ggum Guum is just a stone thrown away from Calla Lily’s pad so it was a short walk home after the party. On my walk home I kept my head down. I was still feeling a bit homesick so I tried to count how many days till I touch down on Canada’s soil – about 120 some days. No sooner had I finished counting down the days but I looked up and there to the left of the street was a man covering his face with a big bouquet of flowers – it was Snickers. He knows me well, too well, so he knew that I’d be coming home still feeling homesick. Him surprising me with a big bouquet of purple flowers was the perfect way to cap off the day. I was right to be so scared of being so happy when I first started dating him because in so many ways and for so many reasons he is just too good to be true to me. God definitely broke the mold when he made my Snickers. Snickers may not be perfect but he’s certainly perfect for me.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
What makes you homesick?
