1. Snickers worked today, which went against our usual norm for the weekend. I woke up at 5:30am because I had suddenly remembered I had forgotten to make rice the night before and I knew if he didn't have any rice he wouldn't eat anything for breakfast. I then woke up again at 6:30am to start making breakfast. One 4 egg white protein-packed pancake for me, and a bowl rice and soup for Snickers. Breakfast time with Snickers is probably my favorite part of the day. It’s right before all the busyness of our day starts, right before our day becomes anything. Our kitchen overlooks a park and the small river, so we usually open up the massive window, let the morning breeze in and enjoy the freshness and newness of the day together.
2. Got word from my dad, my mom isn’t good... again… and again she’s been rushed to the hospital. Mother’s Day is tomorrow and it’ll mark a year of hard time -- a year of being in-and-out of various hospitals; a year of visits by numerous specialists; a year of countless bottles of medicine; a year of fighting cancer and all the complications that came with it.
3. Today marked Parents Day here in Korea but all my thoughts and prayers went to Canada, to the home of my parents.
4. I’ve been looking forward to today ever since Monday, when I stepped into my substitute class. Mind ya, with Snickers working and me sneezing like a mad woman because of the change of seasons driving my allergies mental, I tried to stay inside and just relaxed. Next week is going to be a killer.
5. Ok, so I admit, the kids I taught this past week weren’t so bad. There were many that I thought were pretty cool and sweet. One student in particular stood out. A little boy by the name of Jimmy who insisted on standing up every time I asked him a question. He sat in a classroom surrounded by overly hyper classmates, so his super fine tuned manner of standing up for permission to talk stood out like a sore thumb. He was too adorable for words!!!
6. Relaxing only lasted for so long before relaxing became boring.
7. Scooped up Mi Nam and headed outside to play by the river with him… and the frogs!!! The weather was gorgeous today and in addition to Mi Nam jumping in the river, I too jumped in. I rolled up my pants and put my bare feet in the water.
8. Mi Nam killed a frog, it was hilarious, and then he tried to eat it,not so hilarious!
9. Headed out for a 9km run in the sun. I sported a UP Boxing Club t-shirt, laced up my Adidas shoes, cranked up my iPod tunes, and headed out for a good run. The path I ran was littered with couples walking hand-in-hand, little kids riding their bikes, and men fishing by the lake. I ended up running into a couple of my former Dankook students
10. The plan was to swing by K-Gere’s house to take him out for Parents’ Day and then to swing by Mama Kim’s house to continue on the Parents’ Day celebration. However, with K-Gere out at Granny Kim’s house and Mama Kim out in Icheon, there were no parent-in-laws to celebrate Parents’ Day with. Our backup plans consisted of cuddling up on the floor with each other, a couple cups of what I have labeled ‘mocha love coffee’, a movie, and… well,… the rest is history.
QUESTION OF THE DAY...
What is your mom or dad notorious for saying?
QUOTE OF THE DAY...
Sooner or later we all quote our mothers.
-- Bern Williams
As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).
After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.
Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.
