As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Highlights of my Day... Wednesday, June 2

Today is voting day which means I have the day off my language group, and tomorrow is the birthday of the company where my language group members work which means I have tomorrow off too.

Two days off in a row, gee what’s a girl to do?!

What am I saying??? Everyday feels like a day off to me, but it’s always a definite day on for training!

And thank God it’s voting day today. I was getting really sick of all those over-the-top dancing ajjumas on every corner and all those candidate advertising loud trucks flooding the streets and taking over the corners of downtown.

So with the whole day schedule-free, Snickers and I checked out my old school were I taught, Eumbong Middle School. After doing the typical foreign teacher move working at a hagwon in Korea when I first arrived, I then got into the public school system and worked at Eumbong. It was a big change not only in my paycheck and actual work location but it was a real school with real teachers that had real passion. My co-teacher was awesome and because Eumbong was a small country school, I was quick to become attached to many of my students and coworkers.

So why did I leave Eumbong, well, I left because I got offered a job I seriously didn’t think would be offered to me considering the competition – Dankook University professor position. I took the position. Three years later, despite the close ties and fun times with many of my students, I still regretted quitting Eumbong. I regret it because although Dankook offered me great hours, great pay, and status, it never gave me that “me being here matters” kind of feeling or connection beyond the classroom.

My next move is to possibly get back into the Korean public school system.

QUESTION OF THE DAY…
Where do you get your “being here matters” feeling?

QUOTE OF THE DAY…
You do your best work if you do a job that makes you happy.
