Nestled at the back of Rabat Wine Bar in Apgujeong tonight were 12 fabulous ladies — The Seoul Girls Night (or Day) Meetup Group. It was the first official meet-up I had organized for my girls-only club. I had titled the meet-up “A Fabulous Night of Dinner and Drinks” and it was exactly that – fabulous.
I was forced to take a later-than-expected bus so I thought I’d get there late but I arrived right on time. The next obstacle I was faced with was directions to Rabat. I had sent everyone a map but the few of us who shared a taxi ended up jumping out of the first one when the guy tried to play dumb. The next one, a driver who was dumber than that of which he was playing, ended up having to deal with me in the front seat trying to work his GPS device and Snickers on the phone… and the restaurant.
The hero of the night was a cute Korean hottie who worked at Rabat. He personally came out of the restaurant to search many of us girls out in the busy downtown street and escort us to the restaurant. Talk about an awesome guy!
Finally we arrived at Rabat and though it started off somewhat rocky, as soon as we sat down at Rabat the evening quickly evolved into a great night — proof being in the smiles and laughter at the table and just how loud we all got! We were a loud, loud group of gals but we had a lot of fun chatting, laughing, eating and all that good stuff. We occupied a private booth in the restaurant but I'm sure all could here us gals giggling away. Several of the ladies knew each other from previous club meetings and being in the military together but then there were others like me who were showing their face for the first time.
I had anticipated it to be awkwardly quiet at points in the evening but it wasn’t. There was a lot chatting going on among those at our table and there never really was a quite point. Even when we finished dinner and headed outside, we all stood around for quite some time, chit-chatting and wanting to continue the evening.
The big group of us then broke off into smaller groups. Some continued on to other places while others went home. I jumped in a cab with two and headed to the bus terminal.
I ended up missing the last bus to Cheonan, something I had anticipated and had talked to Snickers about. He had suggested I stay late and let him come out to Seoul to pick me up so that’s exactly what happened. One of the girls and I headed to a coffee shop to continue our chat and to wait for Snickers. When he arrived, we dropped my new found friend home and then we headed back to Cheonan.
Arrived back home at 3am.
Tonight’s meet-up was a success so I’m happy. I really clicked with many of the girls but especially with one in particular, over a cup of coffee. I joked with her, telling that I had wanted to find my niche among the girls and referencing to “Sex and The City”. I told her she could be my “Samantha”… hahaha. So now I’ve got a new friend, a fellow part-Polack… hahaha. I’ve nicknamed her “Sammy-Kat” and though she may not totally fit the referenced character the name has already stuck.
I got a really positive vibe from the entire group tonight so taking on the role of the club’s organizer appears to be a very positive addition to my life here in Korea.
As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).
After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.
Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.
