As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

For the Love of Boxing... Sunday, October 23

Boxercise took over UP Boxing Club today, with five feisty females joining my class, three of which were new. Hosting today’s class was awesome. The girls brought such positive energy to the class and we really just fed off of each other’s energy and effort.

As a professional female boxer here in Korea I personally find the class to be so motivational to me because it is certainly not easy to be in a profession that doesn’t get the due respect or dues it should be. I’ll never be able to shake the comment “Real women don’t box” that’s been repeatedly said to my face but it’s great to be able to generate new ideas surrounding the sport of boxing and women doing it. So even if the girls in my class stumble with the footwork, don’t quite master the punches, or struggle with the ab training I add in at the end, I really love the effort they bring and their desire to learn what I am teaching them. And to tell you the truth, I’ve been really impressed with just how well they’ve been picking up the skills in my class and how dedicated they’ve been with continuing on despite what difficulties in class they may be faced with. For a few, finding the rhythm with their footwork and finding coordination has been somewhat of a challenge but I would surely give them all an A++ for effort! I’ve been blessed two weeks in a row with two classes of all girls, all of which haven’t even remotely given one negative vibe.

Am still working out the background details of the class…
- getting new business cards made
- contacting Paypal
- printing up consent and release forms
- figuring how to create an online class sign-up
- okaying a weekday schedule with the building manager and my coach
- Facebook advertising
- printing up flyers and then handing them out downtown
- approaching select businesses about displaying my ad at their location
- picking out equipment and supplies from Adidas catalogue
At this stage of the company, there is definitely more effort and money being put forth than money coming in but that is ok with me. Setting up the company website with a personalized name, online store and PayPal put me back a bit but I am definitely not complaining because I got into this not expecting to really come out with pocket-loads but to be able to do what I love. I love boxing, I love fitness and I also love teaching so being able to combine them is why I feel successful. Money doesn’t define success to me. Sure it pays the bills but you know what, things always work out and I always seem to do more than just ok. I am always great.

Like my dad always says, “Where there is a will there is a way”.

Honestly, I feel so much farther right now than I thought I would be and a big part of this has to do with all the positive feedback I've been getting from so many people -- thank you! A special thank you definitely to Adidas. Adidas working alongside with me on this has drastically added to my passion of boxing and I am incredibly grateful for Adidas.
