As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Did some adventuring around Cheonan today and visited one of my favorite places where there's a huge park and a winter sledding hill. We also visited the BIG buddha. Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Wednesday, May 31

1. Hurray for Ryan and me both having the day off due to it being Election Day.
2. A double hurray for today because it being Election Day and therefore all those annoying loud trucks and waving women are gone after today! They’ll return again but it won’t be for another four years.
3. Got convinced into going to acupuncture with Ryan and I definitely won’t be too eager to try it again. They told me to relax but when I turned and caught glimpse of the 17 needles poking out of my back, I totally stiffened up and thought I’d faint.
4. Lunch at TGIF turned into quite the social with Ryan and I joining up with three female strangers for some good chatting. One of the girls took down my number and so I’m hopeful that we’ll become great friends.
5. Went camera happy around Cheonan and even made this adventure mini-video while sitting on the back of Ryan’s racing scooter. I should mention here, kids don’t do what I did! Looking at only the tiny screen caused me to get my head whip-lashed by a mysteriously unseen branch. Not cool!
6. While out on a walk in a nearby park, I ran into one of my former Dream students, Jimmy. He ran at me yelling “Amy teacher” and I was so happy to see him. I really miss my mini Koreans!
7. Checked out the massive bronze Buddha at the temple here in Cheonan. It was my second time visiting but Ryan’s first.
8. What started off as an embarrassing moment with me shooting my mouth off in Korean (when I didn’t know some monk was standing there listening) turned into a cool moment with me conversing with the monk in Korean.
9. Through down the yellow card tonight on Ryan’s movie pick, “The Corpse Bride”. I’m not 12 and so I’m not down with cartoons. Ryan had to wake me up when the movie was over, I think that said enough!
10. Find it ironic to note that today my back feels great but now my legs are throbbing… all this started yesterday and ironically I got the acupuncture done yesterday…. coincidence?!

Now tell me I don't have the most beautiful boyfriend, not to mention also the sweetest boyfriend too. Well, okay... he's a second to my father but he's definitely in a league of his own. Thanks for all the moments, laughs, good times, and love. I love you Ryan. Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Tuesday, May 30

1. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO RYAN AND ME!!! Today marks our 200th day together as a couple… yes, they count the days here in Korea, how cute! (And to think… this past Sunday was suppose to be my wedding day… yikes!)
2. Wore my couple shirt (Park Ji Sung soccer jersey) to pump up my students for their big test today and apparently it was the craze for the day. They loved it totally! Korea fighting!!! Ha, ha, ha.
3. Today was the last day for my lower level two students to seek help in my extra morning class and yet I was more nervous than they were.
4. Rather frustrated with my co-worker who I had asked to help monitor the students while I did hosted the English speaking test outside the classroom. Her help consisted of speaking ONLY Korean and showing a movie with Korean subtitles. Some peeople just amaze me!!!
5. Finished off the rest of the English speaking tests with my middle school classes. They were all amused with my “Finish card” and “Mo-lie-oh card”.
6. As Ryan (class 2-2 student) finished his speaking test, he stood up and gave me some candy… is this a bribe?! Ha, ha, ha.
7. My short walk around downtown turned into quite the event due to the Park Ji Sung jersey I was wearing. I felt like a celebrity with all those Koreans commenting on my shirt. It was so funny having a crew of construction workers yell down at me “Korea fighting”… good stuff guys!
8. My evening started off on somewhat of a sour note as I sat back and thought back on the “issues” at work. I really haven’t learned how to keep work at work and let things slide.
9. Like always, Ryan worked his magic and showed the “double p” (patience and persistence… ha, ha, ha) and turned my frown upside down.

10. Went out for an anniversary dinner with my boyfriend, the hottest and sweetest man around (besides my father). Thought it funny that our meal was interrupted by some election candidate who was totally confused that I spoke Korean to her. She even went so far to ask if I was Korean and so I thought that was so cool.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Are you Korean?

QUOTE OF THE DAY...
Congratulations, congratulations, congratulations... to you.

Can you say "money hungry"?!... just joking. Today we killed the piggy banks, literally, to discover our treasure! Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Monday, May 29

1. Took me 40mins to get out of bed today cause I knew I had to teach that “troublesome 2” class (the class for the lower level 2 students).
2. Students filled into my classroom looking all spooked… English speaking tests start today with my level 3 classes.
3. Still trying to make sense out of the incrediably silly marking system I was asked to use. Apparently my test mark has to be out of twenty but I’m only allowed to assign even numbers…. and this makes sense how???
4. Once again I find myself entertained with the excuses of Sci. Guy. Sometimes I wish I had no strainer on my mouth cause I’ve got lots to say with him, added with a slap across the head as a finishing touch.
5. Was almost about to buy Ryan this beautiful gold chain until I saw the price and literally almost had a heart attack! For that price I could pay someone to go to the mine, extract the gold and make me one!!!
6. Realized why Kang doesn’t skip with me when we train…. cause he can’t. He blamed it on his big shoes when it’s really cause he kind of has two left feet. Ha, ha, ha.
7. Made a complete fool of myself in attempt to try to make Kang feel better for his lack of skipping skills. When he was attempting to skip I jumped in but I ended up bursting into laughter. Ya, EVERYONE looked at me, great.
8. Apparently Kang’s favorite colour is grey. He’s always got on grey socks, grey shorts, a grey shirt, grey shoes, and….too much information there Kang.
9. Gave Kang a little pep talk on how to correctly answer those touchy couple questions, like “do you love her?” I asked Ryan the same question and he went way over board with his exaggerated answer.
10. Today Ryan and I cracked open all our packed piggy backs and sorted out all the coins. He’s going to take it to the bank tomorrow for counting… I guess this means supper is on you tomorrow Ryan?! Ha, ha, ha… I want one of everything then!

Hey look at who's my buddy on "MySpace".... Vanilla Ice. It's funny to see just how long this guy has succeeded with his main hit "Ice, Ice Baby" Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Sunday, May 28

1. Woke up rather disappointed that my legs didn’t really feel any different despite the FIVE HOUR mountain hike. Mind you, I did take the B course (…hmmm…. can you say baby course?!)
2. Ryan claims that they don’t have guns in Korea but I’m really curious about this one. Waking up to those extremely noisy election candidates and their blasting trucks at 6am on a Sunday just is NOT cool at all!!!
3. Ryan, who got big kicks out of me dying my eyebrows back to their natural colour but accidentally dying my skin too, has officially labelled me “the Eyebrow Monster”. Thanks Ryan… or should I say “6-pock”?! Ha, ha, ha.
4. Went scooter racing around Cheonan with Ryan.
5. Discovered a really interesting old-time school near my house that was originally made in 1398. So cool.
6. It’s amazing how I live in a country that’s so eager to Westernize but refuses to admit they’re a land of one people who doesn’t know how to deal with us westerners. What, have you never watched TV?! Still get confused and bewildered looks from adults… yes, that’s right…. I came here on a spaceship. Maybe if that was true I could understand your reactions.
7. Did some shopping at Emart with Ryan and ran into Mr. Sci Guy. My first reaction was to hide and so that’s what I did. Then I lifted my shirt a bit above my head and ran away. It’s awkward enough at school; I don’t want this on the weekend.
8. It was definitely interesting to check out Mr. Sci Guy’s girlfriend. I think he’s definitely more high maintenance than her.
9. Ventured over to Skin Food to get a thank you gift for a certain co-worker who drives me…. or does he?! He loves facemasks and lotions…. hmmm, interesting!
10. Ran into my friend at Skin Food who lectured Ryan about the fact that I haven’t called her. What’s up with that eh?! Yes, sweetie… I’ll call you. Thanks for all the freebies too!

Today was quite the adventure... walking around for 5 hours, feeling like a big wet, cold, soggy diaper! Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Saturday, May 27

1. Oh my gosh…. once again I found myself waking up at the exact time I was suppose to be ready and out the door (6am)! I race out of the door in army style despite being called three times by the P.E. teacher. Talk about frustration! Calling me three times won’t make you understand what I said the first time!
2. Great… not only was I super tired but when we loaded the bus I forgot my overly expensive walking stick in the P.E. teacher’s car, it started raining and I had forgotten a sweater! Not a good start!
3. Quite proud of myself for not freaking out when they refused to let me go on the A course because I was a girl. What’s up with that? I’d put money down on my strength and endurance any day over a pack of older men!!! Had I had known that I’d be forced to go on the Baby, Boring B course instead of the Adult, Adventerous A course, I would have stayed home.
4. Joined the pack of women for the A course but found myself leading the pack and even leaving the pack.
5. Entertained myself with my MP3, taking photos/movies of random people and testing out my Konglish on random hikers.
6. Joined up with this really cool guy who was a policeman and who was also forced to do the B course (cause of his girlfriend). He was funny but we all got bad vibes off her. Relax girl!!!
7. The hike wasn’t so bad, that is if you like non-stop pouring rain, massive wind, and a stream of hikers, some of which are with crying children and annoying umbrellas. Don’t get me wrong, I took some nice pictures but I wasn’t so impressed.
8. After of five hours of getting lost on the mountain, we finally finished the long trail only to now have to go in search of the bus…. that took another 20 minutes. Finally got to change into dry clothes, at the back of the bus only to notice some dude in the next bus watching me. It’s been a long day… I don’t need this!
9. Best part of the day was the bus ride home because well, I was leaving, my co-workers had lots to drink, and they all started dancing and singing on the bus. Our bus of professionals quickly turned into quite the party bus!

10. Made it home soaked to the bone and tired. Was greeted by a bored-out of his skull Ryan who was eager to take me out for supper and a movie.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Is this over yet?

QUOTE OF THE DAY...
Girl course... do I look like a little girl to you... think wisely about that mister!

My last time with Tasha... :( She's leaving tomorrow and so tonight so many people showed up to say good-bye. Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Friday, May 26

1. I love it how I live in a country where every woman, man and child seems to have a cell phone attached to their ear and yet my three text messages and voice message supposedly weren’t picked up by my co-worker. She called totally confused but I didn’t bend. I am having the day off.
2. Got dropped off at Emart and got myself geared up for tomorrow’s big mountain hike. I even got a walking stick!
3. Found a mysterious bag outside the Kimbop resturant and totally got robbed the glory of turning it in when the kimbop lady grabbed it from me. She was all over it like a fat kid on a smartie!
4. Due to bored circumstances, I thought it a great idea to dye my eyebrows to match my light hair…. WRONG! In addition to it making me look like an albino, it also felt like it had burnt through ten layers of skin and it really freaked out Ryan!
5. Sensing a bad pattern going on with my training. Now that Kang and me are buddies we chat too much at the gym. So, unless he’s training with me, I’m not being too productive.
6. Went by Mbar to say my goodbyes to Tasha but she was late and so I sat with her buddy Rich and was forced to put up with two really annoying drunk girls. Rich was super cool and so were the two other dudes but they really should have left those two chicks back at the air base!!!
7. Got somewhat rescued by the old Mbar DJ who saw me sitting there roughing it out. He called me over and surprisingly two of his three buddies spoke English. Thanks for the help guys!
8. Tasha and the crew from SLP FINALLY showed up just when I was about to leave. I had to wake up the next day at 5am for the mountain climb trip with my school but decided to stay a bit longer to socialize with them. Sad to see Tasha leave. Now I’m the last remaining of the original crew!
9. It was great to see some of the old crew. My favorite part was hanging out with Jenny and Steve. Steve was super hyper and was “attacking” all us girls… I miss that guy!
10. Ryan FINALLY showed up after I did a little of pleading on the phone. He was bombarded by many people who were eager to finally meet him.

Good old Gwen Stefani and her Harajuku girls in Japan. Should have come to Korea Gwen... life is sweeter here! Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Thursday, May 25

1. Woke up to my first mosquito bite for the year! Ryan claimed that his plug-in buzz zapper would work but how do you explain this one big guy?!
2. Hot topic today in the staff room was the “fresh meat” that was swarming around the school yesterday. No, it’s not imported meat, it’s home grown. Apparently we’ve now got Korean university students who’ll will be assisting me in the English department.
3. Found out more info about these university students. Turns out they’re only here on Wednesdays and so there goes my hopes of passing off my Monday and Tuesday “horror hour” with the low level 2 students.
4. Thought I’d catch a little nap at work cause my contacts were hurting me. Went up to my classroom, closed the blinds and the lights, and sat curled up behind the desk hiding. Turns out they switched around today’s class schedule and so I woke up and there were some 20 kids filing into my classroom. They all had a good laugh when their school-wide search for me ended with their discovery.
5. Tried to change my perspective concerning the 1-2 class. Walked in and yelled out “today you’re going to be my favorite class!” Well, that lasted for about 10 minutes before Oscar fell out of his chair and the whole class went into an uproar and then he did it two more times. This class remains my hardest class.
6. Always a good time with my 2-2 class. It’s always hard to be productive in terms of doing the required text cause this group is just so much fun and all jokes. But today we went over possible test questions for Tuesday’s English speaking exam and while they copied them down I blasted some good English beats over the sound system. They particularly liked Gwen Stefani and Usher.
7. Officially renamed Sue. She no longer goes by the name of “Sue” but instead is now the one and only “Giggle Girl”. We’ve even created somewhat of a super hero costume to match and a little song too.
8. W.W. III dropped down in my apartment a little before midnight.
9. Made the call… phoned into work and left messages saying that I can’t make it tomorrow cause of the Korean/Canadian drama that was playing out in my apartment.

10. Like always, both parties came back together, said sorry and did a grand finale kiss.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Where's this going?

It's always an interesting time boarding the Wollang Elementary School bus. The little one in the picture with me is always climbing on me. I call her "Yup-po-da Chin-go" (Pretty Friend) cause I don't even know her name. Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Wednesday,May 24

1. Just when I thought I was having a rough enough week with, what feels like, everyone coming against me, Mr. P.E. teacher leaves me stranded in the morning. I waited about 30 minutes before I accepted the fact that he wasn’t coming.
2. Ryan to the rescue… thanks for the ride to work. I guess my co-workers saw us coming up the long school driveway and so it was rather funny how six of them ran outside to welcome us…. they’re all curious as to who this Ryan guy is.
3. Did this really cool mock shopping game again with my grade 6 class but this time I made it a shopping spree and the winner got some Canadian coins. They went crazy for it!!!
4. It’s official… I renamed my elementary classes and so it’s no longer “English with Ms. B”, instead it’s “Konglish with Ms. B”… and they all think it’s the funniest thing too! I figure I should really call it like it is. Afterall, my elementary classes consist of me speaking English about 65% of the time and Korean for the remaining 35%.
5. At lunch time I sat down like usual and started eating. One of my favored students, Christina, wanted to sit beside me and so she started to walk towards me when she was suddenly hip-checked by my little buddy from last week, Babo Boy. Now, I don’t think he’s babo (dumb) but nicknamed him that cause he thought it funny to point out all the students who he claims are dumb.
6. Just when I was leaving lunch Babo boy stopped me. He reached inside his pocket and pulled out a soggy piece of gum. I smiled, put it in my pocket and then later had a heck of a time trying to scrap it out.
7. Oh the horror…. as the Wollang Elementary school bus and me pulled up to the main apartment complex, it stopped right in front of some man chopping up the world’s largest pig. Nasty!
8. Can’t really complain cause I’m getting regardless if anyone shows up but today’s English class for teachers consisted of just Mr. P.E. Teacher.
9. A big thanks to all those “people” who reminded me what this Sunday is… or should I say, would have been but isn’t! You’re either too ignorant to see I’m happier now or too stupid to realize it!

10. Ryan ordered Chinese sweet and sour pork and at the sight of it I thought my arteries were going to instantly clog up!

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Can you dig it?

QUOTE OF THE DAY...

Mr. Funny Pants.... Ryan. His English is okay but he's probably one of the funniest people walking around Eumbong Middle School. As funny as he is he gets me into trouble by teaching me bad words but telling me they're okay.... thankfully I've caught on now! Ha, ha, ha! Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Tuesday, May 23

1. NOT IN A GOOD MOOD TODAY…. BEWARE! Just woke up in one of those moods.
2. My bad mood definitely wasn’t helped by the realization that I teach way more classes than the other teachers. They probably think I’m the anti-social there cause while they sip tea I’m busy planning. Sure, I get paid extra for the extra classes but their paycheck still kicks my paycheck’s butt!
3. Word has it that “fresh meat” is coming soon and no it’s not imported… by that I am referring to the fact that from what I understand from the Korean teachers’ chat today, some Korean university students are coming soon to help teach English. This could be interesting!
4. Catapulted a student’s open pencil case and books down the hall after I told him to behave like a million and one times! It was then that the whole class realized that I was serious… shouldn’t have to get to this though.
5. Phoned my mother in Canada to wish her a happy birthday. Chatted for awhile during what I THOUGHT was lunch time. Turns out it was the class before lunch and so all my students were waiting for me. I was 15mins late for a 40min class….. ahhhhhhhhh!
6. Got one of my prized students, Lyndia, on a journal writing routine outside of class, awesome. She’s so cute. She’s starts off each entry with “Dear Sweet”… apparently Sweet is now her imaginary friend she writes to. Hey, whatever works!
7. Me mistaking class time for lunch time soon became the staff joke of the day. I’m glad I amused them all cause I wasn’t as amused. I felt so silly.
8. Well, well, well…. looks like the table have turned and aren’t I quite the idiot. Mr. New Guy at the gym (Kang) is awesome and super funny!
9. After my hour long Konglish conversation with Kang, I vote him one of my top favorite Koreans! He’s a younging but he’s a goodie! We tried to decide on an English name and he insisted on “River”. This coming from a guy who made fun of my English name cause it’s close to grandmother in Korean…. ya, okay.
10. Ended up staying at the gym way too long. I even watched much of the soccer game there.

The Birthday Girl in all her glory. This picture was taken at Christmas time when my family was all reunited for Jesus' birthday. Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Monday, May 22

1. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY MOM…. she’s sweet sixteen and never been kissed…. or maybe not but to my father she’ll always be sweet and young in his eyes. Ah…. so mushy! Happy birthday Mom sending you much love from Korea!
2. Woke up in a cold sweat after I replayed various horrific parts in my head from last night’s movie. Thanks again Ryan… good idea on the whole horror movie. Way to clean out my sweat glands!
3. Traffic was at an all-time high as politician candidates flooded the street corners with their loud trucks and waving women. I wish they could see just how silly they look!
4. Was SUPPOSE to have that special extra class for the low level 2 students (aka the level two trouble makers) but none of them showed up. Sweet start to the week!
5. Gave word to my co-worker that I will use a stick in class. I’m not for beating the students but just having it in my hands intimidates the students. Not too sure if I like that either but that 1-1 class are all wild childs!
6. Okay, enough is enough… Almost got stuck standing in the rain with my notebook computer cause a certain someone had yet ANOTHER excuse as to why they couldn’t drive me.
7. Not much for reading or listening to the news but today I read a VERY interesting news report on kimchi. They “found that if you were a very, very heavy eater of kimchi, you had a 50% higher risk of getting stomach cancer,” said Kim Heon of the department of preventive medicine at Chungbuk National University. Yet ANOTHER reason why I’m not too crazy for it.
8. Showed up at training soaked to the bone cause my umbrella broke. I wasn’t impressed.
9. Hot date with homegirl Jenn…. just joking. Mind you, we ARE probably too of the coolest Western chicks strolling around Cheonan. Ha, ha, ha. Late night get-together at Yawoori.
10. Highschool French classes kicked in as I was forced to translate the French lines in the movie “The DeVinci Code”… talk about a bi-lingual movie. Between listening to the English, trying to translate the French, and reading the Korean when they spoke Hebrew (or whatever it was), I left the movie feeling like my brain had a work-out and a half!

On pretty much every major street corner you'll find these candidates waving you on and bowing as you go about your day. Some even dance! Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Sunday, May 21

1. Woke up at 6am to those loud political candidates and their trucks outside my apartment. Finally fell asleep again and then woke up and had a meal for champions… granola, milk, orange juice and buttermilk pancakes!
2. Today was definitely a day of changes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3. Realized today how much I have let Thursday’s incident get to me when after getting ready I then refused to leave the house.
4. Melt down today on the home front and so I’ll admit it, today I really DON’T like Korea. Been thinking too much about Thursday’s incident and it really escaladed today with me wanting to go home. I think today was the first time I ever really referred to Canada as home.
5. Really got thinking today about what I’ve learnt lately about Koreans. What I learnt is that being an educated, independent and strong, but foreign women, means you’ll be disrespected. no matter what. There’s always going to be ignorant Koreans who obviously are so stupid as to repeatedly label all us foreign women as Russian. I got news for you… most Russians have brown hair and even if I was Russian, at least I’m doing something with my life as oppose to getting drunk every night of the week of cheap alcohol! I buy milk that’s more expensive than your alcohol.
6. Venting to Ryan turned into a pep talk from him. Okay… I’m still on Korea’s side but for now I’ll step down as Korea’s number one fan. I’ve always been pro-Korean but lately I’ve been really bombarded with the whole “Russian” label when all I’ve done since I got here is try to blend in… dyed my hair, eat the food, listen to Korean music, learned some of the language and even learned how to read it.
7. Consider myself extremely lucky for Ryan… he’s a beautiful Korean who’s so different. He definitely keeps me grounded.
8. After agreeing to “change my mind” about eating fish eggs, Ryan then tells me that he ate them all. Well,… that was pointless!
9. Tried to “change my mind” and watch a horror film with Ryan. Tonight’s
featured film was “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. Ya, I lasted about 30 minutes before I started getting sqwormy.
10. Had a hard time falling asleep cause I couldn’t get those chainsaw noises out of my head.

As I sat on the subway ride home from Seoul, I looked out onto the rice fields and the whole sky and all the fields were glowing green. It looked so awesome. Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Saturday, May 20

1. Hanging out in Seoul all night is definitely a marathon. I knew leaving my house on Friday that going to Seoul was going to be lots of fun but very draining.
2. Early, early morning calls from Kim Sang Woo who works in Seoul. I told him I was a the subway station but didn’t know he’d skip out on work to try to catch me…. so cute but no such luck.
3. Stayed up till the wee hours of Saturday morning and then me, Trin and Darnell made our way back via the subway.
4. After such a long night, I really wasn’t in the mood to deal with Mr. Rude taxi driver. It was obvious he thought I was a Russian doing the “walk of shame”. I let it roll until he VERY curiously asked me if this way my home. I knew what he was hinting at and so I said, “No, this is my customer’s home. I am going to work”. I think we were equally disgusted in each other.
5. Crashed and then woke up at 6pm only to fall asleep again and the wake up at 11pm.
6. Late, late night supper at Kimbob Nada with Ryan. Well, it was soup and rice so you can hardly call it a meal. Give me some meat!!!
7. Still feeling the whole Thursday incident on my shoulders, so to speak.
8. Just when you think you’ve hit a rough point something changes things… those two dudes walking down the street TOTALLY changed my night. As Ryan and I passed them, they booth eyed us and then one said “I envy him”. Ryan translated it for me and so I felt awesome. I really needed to hear that!
9. Shocked a group of western on-lookers and got major double…. triple looks as Ryan and I passed them holding hands. Still am confused as to why some people are so surprised a western woman could love a Korean man.
10. Stayed up super late and went to bed super hungry… see I told you that soup just wouldn’t cut it. I need a meal for champions! Ha, ha, ha.

Good times with some of my buddies. Here's a picture of Darnell and me having fun while many others around us went a little too hardcore and past-out. We had a good laugh photographing various "victims"... ha, ha, ha! Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Friday, May 19

1. I love rainy days… it being rainy and being a Friday is just a perfect ending to my work week. For some reasons rainy days always seem more comforting and relaxing. Like I don’t relax enough at work eh?!
2. Tried so hard to not have to kick Alexander (Trouble Boy) and Bryan (Attitude Boy) out of class but today they were just TOO much. I knew kicking them out meant the other teacher would see them and beat them and that’s exactly what happened.
3. Attitude Boy returned to class after getting a beating but he still refused to say sorry. Still working on how to get through to this kid. I like him but his attitude stinks!
4. Got to the root of the problem regarding Kyle and Attitude Boy (Bryan)… both their mothers deserted their families. Kyle’s mother AND father however left him and so he lives with his grandparents. My heart goes out to these kids as I think of my mother and how my life would have been SO different with out her.
5. My weakest student in my parent’s English class (well… mother’s class) was the only one to show up for class and so we cancelled it for today.
6. Ventured to Songtan with my homegirl Jenn. While waiting like OVER AN HOUR (again) for Darnell, I met some of Jenn’s friends who were super hilarious.
7. Got wacked on the butt by some pasty white skin punk who was quite rude when Darnell told him to apologize. Don’t worry Darnell, we can’t all be nice guys, we have to have some really “winners” to keep the balance. It’s all about balance babe!
8. Good times with Darnell, Darrenos, Rick and “Shrek” but holy sausagefest at the places we went to!
9. Decided to go to Seoul with Trin and Darnell. No offense Trin but your so-called “homeboy” is a real winner. He ratted me out for bringing a male friend as oppose to a female friend but failed to realize he really wasn’t invited in the first place. I’ve got two words for his girlfriend “dump him!”
10. Made our way after a pricy cab ride to the club we went to last time, Club Harlem. Once again I found myself feeling much more comfortable surrounded by Koreans.

QUESTION OF THE DAY…
How cool are you?

QUOTE OF THE DAY…
Let pasty white boy go. It’d only give him a cheap thrill and a story to tell his family when he’s back home sitting around the trailer!-- Mad me

Good times... can you tell I still am a kid at heart?! Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Thursday, May 18

1. With less than two weeks to Election Day, candidates are everyone! Find it rather amusing (and pointless too) that here in Korea the candidates stand on street corners with their “waving women” and wave at the traffic. I particularly like that one candidate who stepped out in traffic to shake my hand as we sat at a red light.
2. Murphy’s Law…. studied my Korean last night for about 2 hours, came to school and my Korean Language tutoring was cancelled cause he was too busy.
3. My middle school kids went on a field trip to the mountain and so all us female teachers high-tailed it out of school and went home. Awesome… getting the idea that I’m really getting paid to NOT work.
4. Web-cam chats with my homeboy Iain. Dude, I miss you and admit it, you miss me too. Entertained him with my funny faces, stupid dance moves, and jokes… ha, ha, ha.
5. It was quite obvious that I was being mistaken for a Russian as I stood at the lights and two dudes in a car pulled up in the middle lane gesturing “something”. I throw some “creative” words their way but they didn’t stop so then I through a coin at them.
6. Not only was I out the Korean coin but now I was out of patience and so I walked up to their car as they and others waited at the light. They freaked and bolted through the red light. Bunch of babos!
7. Five minutes after the “downtown drama” incident I got a text messaged from one of my middle school students, Dorothy. I take it she saw the whole thing. Not exactly the lesson I wanted to teach her today.
8. Once again I found myself bored and so I decided to play around with some bleach. Slapped some on my hair and voila… highlights!
9. Met up with Sue and taught her some more boxing. Today’s lesson was dodging jabs. She’s so hyper though and all she wants to do is punch and jump around me.
10. Really got remanising about my boxing after telling Sue all about it. Came home and turned my apartment upside down to make it into a kind of boxing gym with my couch as a heavy bag (turned it on it’s end). Geared up and went at it for about an hour.

QUESTION OF THE DAY…
Are you a lifer?

QUOTE OF THE DAY…

My grade 6 class at Wollang Elementary School. Whether it's hugs from Christina and Vivian, Charlie horses from Charlie, Zealot quoting movies ("Show me the money"), Alexander bouncing off the walls, or getting winks from Wendy,... they're all so much fun! Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Wednesday,May 17

1. Today was Sports Day at my middle school. Not only did I wear all black but I also forgot to take my allergy pill… yikes! Hopefully after teaching at the other school I’ll have prep time as oppose to Sports Day.
2. Taught my grade 6 class (Wollang) shopping expressions and then did a mock shopping spree. Alexander definitely entertained us all with his total misuse of the phrase “that’s cheap” and “that’s too expensive”. He had switched them and so there he stood yelling at Christina…. Christina, you totally abused his ignorance! Too funny!
3. Had a simply fabulously amazing, out of this world day with my Wolang Elementary grade 5 class. I invented this silly picture/sentence game and as I announced chocolate for the winner team, they were TOTALLY hooked!!!
4. My English class for the teacher’s was canceled today cause of Sport’s day and so I had even MORE time to kill.
5. Thought it was great that I wasn’t needed to help out with Sports Day until I realized it now meant I had to kill 3 hours.
6. While walking around downtown I got called beautiful by a bunch of boys who are probably all still sporting baby teeth… I don’t care; I’ll take it. Thanks guys.
7. Double painful experience… not only did I have to fork over money to renew my membership but the head trainer was all friendly with me today and was being very distractive.
8. Pushed it way too hard at the gym and found myself feeling way too faint. Had to stop and rest on my way home cause I almost past-out!
9. I am now the proud girlfriend of TGIF’s newest Cajuan member… and ya, I have no idea what that means but it apparently it gets us discounts at the TGIF restaurant. Okay, cool?!
10. COUPLE SHIRTS!!! It’s official, I have turned MORE Korean! Ryan bought us couple shirts online for our upcoming anniversary and so we tired them on today for size. And forget about those other cheesy Donald duck shirts others have… our couple shirts are red Manchester United soccer jerseys made by Nike…. #7 Park J-Sung!

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Why do you talk English in Canada?

I'm convinced that Toto is Ryan's dublicate, minus some years. It's incrediable how much he resembles Ryan! Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Tuesday, May 16

1. Was dying for my morning coffee. Got into work, dropped all my stuff, put a coin in the coffee vending machine and out came nothing but dirty looking water. Dang!
2. Classic trick… bribed the kids with chocolate! Today I played a game with my level two students and had a bag of chocolate as the reward (hmmm… bribe). They went crazy for it and holy, talk about competition! They went straight to the bell and were at each other’s throats.
3. Bribed Ryan’s little look-alike, Toto, with chocolate cause at first he wouldn’t pose for a simple picture. Gave him one piece of chocolate and then he was all in my face and wouldn’t stop posing… silly boy!
4. Allowed my 1-1 class to watch a movie today cause of their midterm marks. Lyndia scored a perfect score on all of her tests except in one class where she scored 97.5!
5. Got numerous of comments about how loud my English classes are… today was definitely one of the loudest classes I’ve had! We played this game to prepare them for their English speaking test coming up. They loved it!
6. Only in Korea would you find a dude cruising down the streets with some cheesy remix of Vanilla Ice’s “Ice, Ice Baby” song. You’re too cool buddy.
7. I miss Mook and his Brittney Spear’s “Greatest Hits” CD… still think the name “Brittney” and the term “greatest” are like an oxymoron. Brittney also being another moron in this statement. Ha, ha, ha!
8. Was apprehensive about training today. I haven’t yet mastered how to say “I want to extend my membership for 3 more months” (in Korea of course) nor was I in the mood to deal with Mr. Funny Guy.
9. Opted out for the gym and instead had a long cat nap… seniors nap that lasted for about 3 hours after work.

10. MSN chats with good ol’ Dave. If there were two people I’d vote back into Korea it’d definitely have to be Dave and Errol. Dave was my lifeline at work and Errol, well, he was super funny and I loved his mellow mood.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Are you coming back?

QUOTE OF THE DAY...
Look at you, you're doing better!

Caught on tape... what's with those animal slippers?! Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Monday, May 15

1. Happy Teacher’s Day to all the teachers out there! Today I had the day off and so I celebrated by sleeping in super late and hibernating in my home. Sweet!
2. Thanks to all my Eumbong Middle School students for their numerous text messages today. I lost count of how many messages I got after I ran out of fingers…. ha, ha, ha.
3. Hero of the day… Ryan with his surprise visit with medicine!
4. Definitely did some major lounging around the house. Studied some Korean, made some breakfast and then went back to bed.
5. Tried to study Korean and ran into the word “conjugation”. Looked it up on an online dictionary and the definition was “the act of conjugating”…. what the heck! You can’t define a word with the word!
6. Hit the gym around 7pm and low and behold, Mr. Funny guy was there! His joke about Mr. New Guy was funny the first five times, maybe even the first six times, but after like the hundredth time it’s getting pretty old.
7. I don’t exactly know what it is but, according to Ryan, I’ve got a “duck bum”.
8. Holy ackward moment!!! As I was searching for my keys in my bag I turned and there in the courtyard of my building was some dude having a total fit and then he peed in the bushes. Oh my gosh… what a Kodak moment and, like always, I caught him on tape!
9. Two hours later and that same dude was in the courtyard. I ventured down to ask him for help and from what I got, he had locked himself out of his apartment. Five minutes later his girlfriend showed up with attitude written ALL over her face! Yikes!
10. I don’t know what Ryan was thinking but as the elevator came down to my floor he continued to dance silly. There stood three girls as the elevator door opened and here stood Ryan, totally embarrassed… oh ya, I stood there laughing my head off! It was so funny. So much for Mr. Cool Cat!

My father and the love of his life, the apple of his eye, and the heartbeat of his home.... my mother. Happy Mother's Day Mama Bere! Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Sunday, May 14

1. Okay, so I admit it…. it’s actually Tuesday but I’m writing Sunday’s events and I’m struggling to remember them. I’ve been quite distracted lately, sorry.
2. Happy Mother’s Day to ALL the mothers out there… and of course, a special Happy Mother’s Day to my mom… Mama Bere!
3. Predictions on who’s going to be added to the mom list next year…. hmmm. When are you going to join the list Andi?… no pressure ;)
4. Felt rather ticked-off when some super skinny Korean sales chick wouldn’t let me try on a button up sweater. I think she was implying I was fat and so I’d stretch the heck out of it…. one step closer and I would have stretched the heck out of HER! And no, I’m not sorry I’m not anorexic looking like you.
5. Living in a country where 110lbs for a chick is considered fat, is sometimes really frustrating. Today was definitely one of those frustrating days!
6. The more and more I deal with the attitude of some of these people, the more and more I think Ryan’s a smart man for desiring a western woman! Some of these Korean chicks have issues!!!
7. So cute… Ryan said he was sad only because I was sad. Thought it kind of funny though cause he really didn’t know why I was sad.
8. Supper out on the town. I love chicken but Korean chicken makes me a bit nervous… you’d be nervous too if you could buy a whole chicken for a few dollars. Tonight’s meal was awesome though. I’m loving the Korean restaurants.
9. Hoping this Korean sinks in. After loading my head to the max with new Korean words I don’t know if I even remember one of them!
10. Thought I was going insane as I rubbed and rubbed my eyes until I finally opened them and couldn’t see anything!!! Oh the pain.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Who'll be the next mom?

QUOTE OF THE DAY...
A mother is the one through whom God whispers love to His little children.

Here's a picture of my buddy Phil's little girl. She's a mixed Western/Asian baby... I love the mix! So cute! Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Saturday, May 13

1. All play and NO work… hung out with my little sister, Sue. Together we played in the playground, made creatures out of play dough, met the neighbor’s kids, played soccer in the house, taught her how to box and then sat around eating pizza. I love it!
2. Am convinced Korean kids are the cutest looking kids!!! While playing with Sue, we were bombarded with about seven other kids who spotted us playing with play dough outside.
3. Amused this one little boy laughed every single time I pretended to eat the play dough cookie I made. Of course the added sound effects of me burping and chewing loudly added to the humor.
4. Am convinced I am one of Sue’s mom’s dearest friends. In addition to her random text messages, today she gave me a little gift. She bought me Dior lipstick/gloss and it was the perfect color. I don’t think she’ll ever let me leave Korea!
5. Walking out of Sue’s house with Sue and her mom, I was greeted by such a sweet surprise… there stood Ryan. Bonus points for him surprising me!!!
6. Well the original plan was to go to Muudio with Tasha and her crew. That got canceled out cause of work. Then, the plans changed to me going to Songtan and well, that got cancelled too cause of Ryan’s smooth lines…. and we’ll just leave it at that! Ha, ha, ha.
7. Am convinced Ryan is by far the most innocent and sincere man I’ve ever met! Why Time Magazine never nominated him for ‘most beautiful man’ is beyond me!
8. We loaded up Ryan’s scooter to the max with groceries from Emart, ice cream from Natuur, and strawberries. Little did Ryan know, I ate SO many strawberries as we flew down the streets on his scooter!
9. Movie night. Tonight’s featured film was “The family Stone”. I’m all about big names and so I was impressed by the casting of this film. I really liked it. Ryan on the other hand thought it was a total flop.
10. Went to sleep with a bit of a stomachache from all those unwashed strawberries I ate. Ahhhhh!

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Can I steal you?

Today we had a celebration for Teacher's Day and for one of the teachers who's leaving cause she's having a baby. The teacher in the top right corner is my Korean language teacher. Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Friday, May 12

1. Jeffery in my grade 6 elementary class thought it funny to do everything possible to get my attention, including writing his answers with his bleeding finger. For some strange reason I like this kid but he’s the worse kid in my class in terms of behavior. Kicked him out for the rest of the class.
2. Experienced first hand how cruel kids can be. Today in my grade 5 elementary class the class loner, Kyle, was totally picked-on by the whole class. I told him to sit down and ALL of his classmates refused to let him sit with them. One kid even went so far as to spit on an empty seat.
3. I was totally lost for words and didn’t know what to do but comfort Kyle as he stood there crying. I yelled at all the students (in Korean) and then at free time I made them all sit there instead of playing.
4. Classes today totally sucked and so I was really looking forward to my parents’ English class. At 3:30pm I ran up to the classroom and no one was there. All my students were in the cooking room making a meal for the teachers for a mini Teacher’s Day celebration.
5. Am convinced the mothers in my parents’ English class are the sweetest women in Korea! They prepared this big feast for all us teachers and then sang a song dedicated to teachers.
6. Mr. Science guy bailed on driving me home (no comment here!) and so one of the other Korean teachers drove me home. I humored her with my Korean and she humored me with her body language. She speaks probably five English words!
7. After the rough day of teaching today I really needed to relax and have a drama-free night. Ryan went to a birthday party who’s expected guest list would have caused me nothing BUT drama.
8. Hooked up with my homegirl Jenn and hit the movies. We won’t mention how I kind of embarrassed myself in front of that guy but we had a good time.
9. Jenn… I’m so glad you were tired and decided to go home. Had we had gone to where I had mentioned, we would have ran into Dumb and Dumber!!!
10. I admit it, I’m not ashamed… there are a couple of people here that I just don’t care to talk to. If we were in my home country we wouldn’t be friends and so why do I have to be friends with them here?! I’m not hard up for companionship and I’m not interested in your pathetic and immature conversations. I’ve taught kindergarten kids who have proven to be more interesting and mature than you!

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Is this as grown up as you're going to be or is there still hope?

QUOTE OF THE DAY...
You can only be young once. But you can always be immature.

The view of downtown Cheonan as seen from my pimped out pad here on the 7th floor. Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Thursday, May 11

1. Didn’t have Korean language class today but some how ended up with homework anyways!
2. Tooth brushing marathon… or so it seemed. I came to thinking about why we’re all appear to brushing our teeth till they bleed… no one wants to be the first one finished brushing. Maybe it’s a Korean thing.
3. Discussion at lunch among us female teachers was “the ideal guy”. They all had these huge long lists of “must haves”. Mine was simple… he’s got to be funny. I could careless if he had both legs. Apparently they thought this was SO funny.
4. Well this sucks. Almost sprained my ankle trying to kick the biggest kid out of my 1-2 class…. Oscar… go back to your garbag can on Sesame Street. Go play with your gay friends Bert and Ernie after school, not in my class!!! Can you tell I’m frustrated?
5. Our “girl chat” continued at the end of school with what Korean men view as the “ideal girl” (key word here being… Korean). Apparently Korean men like sexy weak women… well, I’m not weak in any sense of the word so I’m not sexy. That’s okay… I rather be beautifully strong and knowing I could take on and take down any chic, my men back home would think that’s hot!
6. What do they know?!… I may not have many Korean men calling me sexy but I’m called “sexy teacher” everyday by my middle school girls!
7. Corrupted my 3-2 class by teaching them the word “gay” and then the rest of the day I had to deal with them totally abusing the word.
8. Turns out Mr. New Guy at the gym actually works there so in addition to Mr. Friendly trying to push Mr. New Guy on me, I now have to see this dude every time I go train. (oh ya, changed Mr. Hottie’s name to Mr. New Guy).
9. More games on the scooter! Tried to kiss Ryan but ended up totally head banging cause I forgot my helmet visor was down. Some how this turned into a game.
10. Sushi for supper! Ryan and I checked out this wicked sushi restaurant.

QUESTION OF THE DAY…
Are you gay?

QUOTE OF THE DAY…
You’re such an ear-muncher!-- Yoonbeer

Ahhhh.... stop sending me all those pointless forwards. YOU know who you are!!! Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Wednesday, May 10

Dear All,

I want to thank all of you who have taken the time and trouble to send me your strange and deranged chain letters. Yes, thank you. Thank you from the bottom of what's left of my heart for making me feel safe, secure, blessed, and wealthy. I am now dumber having had read them and now I've lost minutes, hours, and days of my life that I will never get back!

Because of your concern...

I no longer can drink Coca Cola because it can remove toilet stains.

I no longer use cling-wrap in the microwave because it causes cancer.

I no longer can watch Disney movies because they will brainwash me with their hidden satanic subliminal messages.

I no longer check the coin return on pay phones or walk on the beach because I could be pricked with a needle infected with AIDS.

I no longer use margarine because it's one molecule away from being plastic.

I no longer go to shopping malls because someone will drug me with a perfume sample and rob me.

I no longer answer the phone because someone will ask me to dial a stupid number for which I will get the phone bill from hell with calls to Jamaica, Uganda, Singapore, and Uzbekistan.

Thanks to you, I have learned that God only answers my prayers if I forward an email to seven of my friends and make a wish within five minutes. (not true but I thought it was funny to write it)

I no longer have any savings because I gave it to a sick girl who is about to die in the hospital (for the 1,387,258th time… or was that the 1,387,259th time?!).

I no longer have any money at all, but, that will change once I receive the $15,000 that Microsoft and AOL are sending me for participating in their special e-mail program.

I am obsessed with washing food cans before opening them to avoid the plague in case mice peed on any of them.

I even wash peeled bananas and oranges.

Yes, I want to thank all of you soooooooo much for looking out for me! I will now return the favor. If you don't send this e-mail to at least 1200 people in the next 60 seconds, you will gain 50 pounds, lose your loved ones, have your heart broken 10 times before you actually give up looking for love entirely and die from weird crippling diseases. I know this will occur because it actually happened to a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of my next door neighbour's ex-mother-in-law's 8th husband's 2nd cousin's 3rd husband's ex-wife's mother's beautician!

From,

Amy.... the A-Bomb!

I spy with my Polish eye... one hot Korean guy! Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Tuesday, May 9

1. Got approached by the teacher who teaches Korean (culture, history and language). Apparently he has decided to start teaching me Korean!
2. Had my first Korean language class with Mr. Korean. He doesn’t speak a word of English but I bedazzled him with what Korean language skills I’ve already picked up. Korean alphabet…. no problem!
3. First day of Korean language class and I’ve already got four pages of homework!
4. Presents from students’ parents for the upcoming Teacher’s Day started rolling in today.
5. I’m convinced some student hid the “beating stick”. I don’t agree to it but did resort to twisting a few ears today. Apparently that works like a charm too.
6. First time making a middle school student cry. I kicked out Terry from my 1-1 class cause I heard some kid swear at Lyndia (she was trying to get them to be quiet). He’s known for “expressing” his opinions and so I kicked him out and threatened to give him a red sticker… ya, they’re on this sticker thing. Red stickers are really bad. Well, long story short… he wasn’t the one who swore and so he broke down after class. I felt so bad too.
7. Saw my first car crash. While waiting for the light to turn this young dude stopped suddenly and the front end of his car went under a bus. I must admit it was so funny… his car was stuck under this packed bus!!!
8. Lasted to about 6pm until I finally broke down and scrubbed my eyes with my fists…. ahhhh the itchiness!
9. So, the only dude that talks to me is now becoming somewhat of an annoyance to me. He asked me if I was going to marry my boyfriend but I had no comment and so he told me a needed a better boyfriend. His selection… the new guy at the gym. Don’t get me wrong, the new guy is hot but my guy is incrediably hot!
10. Spent the rest of my training totally trying to avoid eye contact with Mr. Friendly who kept on waving me over to talk to Mr. Hottie.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
How long do you think it'll take before I'm fluent in Korean?

QUOTE OF THE DAY...
Oh my gosheeeeeee

Attack of the mini Koreans! I don't know who the girl on the left is but there's Jack, Charles and Jinny. These kids rock! Posted by Picasa

Highlights of my Day... Monday, May 8

1. Happy Parent’s Day… thanks mom and dad, because of you I’ve got ANOTHER day off!
2. Got played by a taxi driver who thought I was some new foreigner. He tried to play stupid to what I know I was saying correctly so I got Ryan on the phone with him. He was all smiles until I flexed my Korean language skills and gave him a mouthful as I exited the taxi.
3. Ventured over to SLP and visited my former staff and students. I was bombared by the mini Koreans as I exited the elevator… I miss them so much. Got almost squeezed to death by little Jack. Almost convinced myself I was going to steal that little guy.
4. I don’t think Mr. Lee was too impressed with me strolling into the school on my day off while his teachers work like slaves. In my heart I knew he’d kind of give me the cold shoulder but I was disappointed when he did. He still hasn’t learned!!!
5. It was great to see many of the staff I use to work with. I miss them but I think I miss them more now that I work with only Korean-speaking teachers. My 15 minute conversation with Tasha involved more English than I’ve ever heard at my middle school in like a week!
6. Spent the rest of my afternoon making a certain present for a certain someone… who will remain nameless until it reaches THEM. (hint, hint… him and her).
7. Hit the gym pretty hard and was put into an awkward position when the one dude who talks to me tried to introduce me to the new single dude. He had asked me earlier if I was going to marry my boyfriend and I had no answer so now he thinks I should look for a new boyfriend…. someone who’ll marry me. Thanks buddy but I’m not exactly hard up for guys and I’m more than happy with my boyfriend.
8. Almost fell flat on my face doing the whole run and jump on the scooter move I pulled in the parking garage. Thankfully no one but Ryan was there to see my almost-mishap!
9. Did the whole hidden camera thing and caught Ryan on tape singing AND dancing. His dance moves were like a mix between Michael Jackson and someone having a seizure. Okay, so it wasn’t that bad.

10. Did some hardcore Korean language studying. I did about four pages in my writing exercise book and re-read the first four chapters of my Korean text. I was on a roll!

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Was that a new dance move or do you need some kind of help?

QUOTE OF THE DAY...
Don't ever do that in public!
