As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Lots of suga' being thrown around today.

And it all started with me throwing myself some suga' -- a visit to the hair salon for a cut and dye.

God threw us some suga today with some much needed rain. I say much needed because with China's yellow sand blowing like havic in Korea I'm about to scratch my eyeballs out of my head!

And all this rain means one smelly little doggie -- Mi Nam. Snickers threw him some suga' though by running in the rain with him. He then jumped in the shower with him and blow dried his fur... even I don't blow dry Mi Nam's hair! Talk about being spoiled ;)

It's a toss up here with who was the one throwing suga', Mi Nam or me.

Mi Nam's not allowed on the bedding, according to Snickers that is, so this is a bit of a secret. My secret being that I let him cuddle up to me on the bedding when I'm home alone. Today we totally got caught... caught snoring and snuggling by Snickers... hahaha.

Rainy Day Happiness... Saturday, April 30

I love, love, love rainy days. I don't care for this radio active rain however but I do love the whole mood I instantly jump into when a rainy day greets me. Everything always feels slower on rainy days. There's less people on the streets, no one out on the path where I run, and I never feel bad for staying hibernated in my house or doing nothing really in particular.

Rainy days alway feel like a much-needed warm hug.

Yup... I love, love, love rainy days.

Today was a rainy day but it started off with the sky only hinting that it'd later rain. I had a hair appointment so I scooted over on Gotti for that. I've finally found a hair designer who does my hair exactly the way I want it, correction, she does it better.... so much better. I like my hair appointments with her but must note that an appointment with her means giving up like half your day cause once she and I get chatting there's no stopping us. Getting my hair done there today lead into her offering me lunch and then more chatting... hahaha.

Snickers had to work today so it was just Mi Nam and I at Ggum Guum. I ate my dinner on the floor with Mi Nam and cooked him up my egg yokes. Dinner for two, how cute. As for the rest of my day, I did some Korean studying, cleaned the house, and spent way too long re-reading some old Oxygen Fitness magazines I've had for a couple of years now. Time to get some new Oxygen magazines, I know, but here in Korea getting my hands on an Oxygen magazines means heading out to Seoul and dropping $20 per issue... ouch!!!

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Can I get a subscription to Oxygen Fitness magazine sent to my doorstep here in Korea?

Friday, April 29, 2011

They say every day is another day to learn something new.

What I learned today...

Learned that Mi Nam is more Korean than I thought, posing perfectly for pictures and knowing what exact pose makes him look super cute and which side is his good side... hahaha.

Learned that combining things you may like doesn't necessarily mean coming out with something new you'll like, like my Popeye-spinach drink I made today. I love blueberries so I threw them in, I love milk so in it went too, spinach was the third ingredient I love, but I should have stopped there. I went too far with throwing in chicken and blending it all together. In theory it was a great idea but in reality it left me feeling like I was going to blow chunks after I downed about half of it in two big gulps.

Learned that just like Asians look the same to so many foreigners apparently us foreigners all look the same to many Asians, and in this case these Asians were my daycare mini-Koreans. They spotted this poster during their hospital check-up. They were convinced it was me because of the poster girl's hair and muscular looking arm. After their initial shock that I was supposedly on a poster at the hospital came shock and confused looks. "Who is this guy?" they asked me. "Amy Teacher's husband is Korean!" others added.

Freaky Friday... Friday, April 29

Today I randomly checked my former email account that I used back when I taught at Dankook and low and behold I almost missed out on a very, VERY important email!

Hi Amy,

Hope all is well with you.

We have an IFBA world title fight coming up at the beginning of June (I believe the date is June 4) between Dan Bi Kim and a Chinese fighter, to take place in Korea. I would like to have you supervise this fight for the IFBA. This would entail being present at the weigh-in to verify both fighters making weight, and then sitting ringside with the KBC official scoring the fight, to record the actual judges' scores.

You would be paid a Supervisor's fee directly from the promoter which is determined in the sanctioning agreement for the fight.

I will be back in Korea for the May 1 Ji Hyun Park vs Krisztina Belinsky fight in Gunpo. It would be ideal for you to attend that fight and I could review all the fight supervisory details with you, and also introduce you to the KBC official you would be working with. I look forward to hearing back from you as soon as possible and look forward to having you work with us.

Best regards,

Judy Kulis
President
International Female Boxers Association

Of course I emailed her back, appologizing for not seeing her email earlier but also to tell her I'm so for working with the IFBA! I'm incredibly flattered that they'd consider me so now the plan is to head out to Gunpo this Sunday to see the live boxing bouts and learn what it means to supervise a fight -- wicked!!!

Black Skinny dropped by the club today, and he brought his shortest but biggest fan -- his son, Mini-Skinny.

Guess Who's Back... Thursday, April 28

It's been almost two weeks since Black Skinny shockingly lost his fight.

It's been almost two weeks since Black Skinny's been MIA from the boxing club.

He's been totally out of sight but definitely not out of mind.

Tonight he stepped back into the boxing club. I had just arrived and was gearing up for boxing when at the corner of my eye I caught glimpse of Mini-Skinny -- who isn't so skinny, he's actually quite pudgy but the name fits considering who his dad is. Anyways, so in came Mini-Skinny. He waddled in, bowed to us and then sat down on the floor. I knew right away who he was so I jumped up and ran to the club door where I then spotted Black Skinny coming up the stairs. He only dropped by to pick up his stuff that he had left behind at the fight but it's a step closure for him with regards to getting back in the ring.

His short pop-in to the club was greeted by "what-do-we-say" questionable glances by those training. I on the other hand was estatic to see him so I gave him a good upper cut to the rear and asked him if he forgot about us. "Don't leave me here alone to train with these girls" I joked, and by 'girls' I was making a crack about my male buddies at the club.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Doesn't saying nothing make an uncomfortable situation all that more uncomfortable?

Five days a week I am bombarded by 20 mini-Koreans who insist on touching my hair, holding my hand, hanging off of my arms, and doing a million else other "skinship" things little mini people do.

And then I spend three afternoons a week dealing with similar mannerisms but it's funny cause instead of me being on the recieving end it's me on the giving end.

My daycare mini-Koreans have turned me into one of those touchy-feely, I-can't-stand-beside-a-student-without-touching-their-arm kind of teacher... hahaha. Consequently, I've become extra silly. This is me at work. I'm a paid professional kid.

Too Tired to Think... Wednesday, April 27

After a full day of mini-Koreans practically crawling all over me and pulling at my shirt, I raced off to boxing as soon as my Bundang bus returned to Cheonan.

Many of my K-Crew here think I'm some kind of super woman, juggling work and working out, but to tell you the truth some days it is hard. Snickers suggested I take the day off boxing but I love my boxing and I love the intense workout. Even coach Junior Mint suggested I go home when I arrived looking quite exhausted at training.

There's no rest for the wicked I suppose. I guess that means I'm wicked... hahaha. Maybe wickedly stubborn... hahaha.

It's been a busy day and even my fingers are too tired to type -- hence why this posting wasn't actually posted till later this week.

By the way, Snickers absolutely loved those Nike boxing boots I bought him, proof being the fact that their sitting on my kitchen table as if they're on some kind of display.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Why is there never enough time to do all that you really want to do?

My choice of foot wear... of course, Adidas. Thanks to Adidas I'm rockin' some sweet boots.

And my choice of man... of course, my man Snickers.

I've Got A Secret... Tuesday, April 26

They say it's better to give than to recieve and I didn't think this really true until I saved up my "secret money" for a gift for Snickers. He saw this particulary item on the Internet and it was like love at first sight. His eyes got all wide, his mouth dropped and he literally grabbed the sides of the computer screen with both hands to take a closer look at it.

Recently he's been pretty stressed and annoyed with KBC not scheduling him any fights so I thought what better way to turn his frowns upside down by surprising him with the jaw-dropping thing he saw on the Web. Snickers and I only allow ourselves $50 a week for what we call "secret money" so it took me awhile to save up enough money, especially with the harsh delivery fee to get it sent from America... yikes :(

Today it arrived. The UPS arrived, knocked on my door and I came running to the door knowing full well that Snickers will go crazy when he sees what I got him. I then sat down and wrote a juicy love letter to accompany the surprise gift.

So... what's inside the box you ask. A pair of the new Nike Machomai boxing shoe in red.

They've been described as "The ring shoes of choice for world champions Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Julio Caesar Chavez, Jr. and 2008 Olympic Boxing Teams from China, Thailand, Ukraine, Korea, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Estonia." But to tell you the truth, they sold me with mentioning Manny Pacquiao, both Snickers and I like him especially after we were in the Philippines.

I'm an Adidas fan all the way, though I should not it was hard to give up my Nike Shox Shoes. Snickers, on the other hand, swings both ways. He loves Adidas but he does have a thing for Nike too. Mind you his love for Nike isn't very strong. I've been weakening it with bombarding him with my Adidas... hahaha. I guess giving him these boots won't really help but he's going to be so happy and that's the whole point of this gift, to make him happy and to keep him pumped about boxing. Anyways, keeping these boots a secret from the day I first ordered them to today when they finally arrived was definitely a hard thing for me to do. Thankfully I've had the Polack at work to talk about the excitement of it all. The plan is to leave them in the middle of the kitchen floor tomorrow for Snickers to discover when he wakes up. He's going to love, love, love these!!!

Eat your veggies!!!

I may be one busy lady but despite not having enough time on my hands I am always sure to leave the house with a bag loaded with food. Here's my snack on the go. I resorted to Popeye's style by loading up on spinach. It's a spinach shake -- plain old spinach with milk.

Don't Touch Your Face!!!... Monday, April 25

Kids are the dirtiest creatures alive… I’m convinced of it. And Mi Nam, my dog, with his daily cleaning routine which involves licking his own rear is nothing in comparison to what I’ve seen my daycare mini-Koreans do.

Seriously.

I can’t help but be reminded of a grade nine science experiment I did where I investigated the extent and amount of germs on daily items, like your bed mattress and door handles. It was disgusting.

My daycare mini-Koreans are adorable. I love scooping them up and tickling the heck out of them till they're on the verge of peeing their pants but naturally they have a healthy curiosity with what’s in their nose, what’s in their pants, what’s this and what’s that, but just as touchy as their wondering and curious fingers are they are equally unaware of just how gross it is to see them “investigating” things. I’m not a clean-freak but walking out with a white shirt now spotted in guestionable green spots is… hmmm… “interesting”.

The 5 Golden Rules to Booger-free Health:

1. Don’t let anyone (including yourself) or anything touch your face – this includes your hands, their hands, and clothing.

2. Make hand soap your new best friend.

3. Refrain from picking up anything questionable unless you know what it’s made of.

4. Don’t put anything in your mouth unless you’re the only one who has touched it, this includes things like chopsticks, cups, and so on.

5. Be sure to load up on extra vitamins because colds will be shared and sneezes will land on you so you don’t want to go in without a strong immune system to guard you.

I’ve been working at the daycare for two months now and today I woke up sick. I wasn’t feeling so good late last week so I loaded up on liquids and tried to get some extra sleep but my dedication to my boxing left me training late and lacking sleep.

Today I woke up with no voice. My throat was bone dry, my eyes were itchy, my head was throbbing, and my nose was runny. I ended up taking the day off from the daycare and headed to the hospital where the doctor loaded me up on meds and sent me home to sleep. Sleep?! No time for sleep. I probably slept an extra couple of hours but with an important meeting I couldn’t miss and coach text messaging me to come out to boxing, I downed my meds and headed out the door around 1pm.

Attended a friend's wedding -- my friend being the cute groom with the perm ;)

He's actually a friend-through-a-friend -- my other friend being the gorgeous man on the far left, my husband Snickers.

And here's another close friend of Snickers and me -- Old Rock -- kickball team member to Snickers and personal body guard to me. Clubbs is a new buddy of mine. He's Snickers' friend whom I just recently was introduced to but I guess anyone who continually follows me down the street on my scooter honking is bound to eventually meet me.

I love this shot. Note our buddy, the groom, totally ignoring what he's doing so that he can jump in on our shot and show his big grin... hahaha. Awesome.

Introduction to Peg Legs... Sunday, April 24

It’s been a busy weekend, hence why I’m posting about the Saturday wedding on Sunday’s posting. Yesterday I had an early morning daycare workshop to attend out in Seoul but with my friend’s wedding being immediately after I had to wear my wedding guest clothes to my meeting. I then had to rush it back to Cheonan via a bus only to have Snickers waiting in the car at the terminal. I made it to the wedding with literally just seconds to spare.

To be brutally honest, I don’t like Korean weddings – the so-called “modern” wedding hall-held Korean weddings. Correction, I think they’re cheesy and annoying so I don’t want to write about them.

Mouse Doctor’s got a new girlfriend. Yup, he’s replaced Cheeto Girl with Peg-Leg Girl and they made their newly-formed couple introduction today at the wedding. How uncomfortable was that, being in a friend-packed wedding hall, all of which expected Mouse Doctor to show up with Cheeto Girl.

“Be nice” Snickers whispered to me.
“Forget that. Kick her” Old Rock told me.
“I’m not going to kick her” I told them both. “Punch her yes but kick her no” I added.

I heard Snickers tell me to be nice but if Peg Legs thinks I’m going to be all buddy-buddy with her because I’m all buddy-buddy with Mouse Doctor than I’ve got news for her. Cheeto Girl is my girl here in Korea and not too long ago her and I sat down to have a serious talk about her and Mouse Doctor’s relationship. I’m no genius when it comes to relationships, I just got lucky by meeting someone more stubborn than me, someone who refused to let me walk away without giving a good fight.

Snickers and Old Rock joked with me, teasing me about being sensitive regarding Mouse Doctor and Cheeto Girl breaking up. "They broke up" Snickers told me, "not you!" Honestly, I knew they weren't a perfect couple but they were one of those disfunctional couples whose handicaps were equally strange and somehow they just worked to make the couple work.

Mouse Doctor did the mistake by introducing me to Peg Legs in front of Snickers and Old Rock – both of which are huge instigaters of trouble and love to egg me on.

“What’s your job?” Peg Legs asked me.
“She gets paid to punch people!” Old Rock jumped in with.
“Well, that’s not totally true but yes, I do fight… professionally” I noted.

She didn’t know how to take our comments so she laughed it off and looked wide-eyed and confused at the bunch of us standing there. Great… great first impression. I should note that yes, she’s well aware that I’m not only her new boyfriend’s good friend but I am also a close friend of her new boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend.

“And what does your husband do Amy?” she then asked.
“He gets paid to punch people too!” Old Rock just had to add.
“Yes,… that’s true” I said and with that the conversation and questions stopped. I think maybe she was too scared to ask anymore. Scared that we'd say more strange things or scared that the strange we were talking about was actually true.

He busted into some shadow boxing cause he was so stoked. He even tried to challenge Mi Nam... hahaha.

Japan in Korea... Saturday, April 23

A couple of years ago I met Satoshi. He had arrived from Japan on a work trip and had found his way to UP Boxing Club. Junior Mint doesn't speak a word of Japanese or English but Satoshi spoke English so Junior Mint called me up, asking me to come translate cause there was some Japanese boxer who wanted to train at the club. That's the first time I met him.

Satoshi trained at my boxing club for a couple of months while he was here for work and then he returned. But that wasn't the last I'd see of him. Since our first inital meeting, we've seen each other a couple other times and one of those times was when I fought in Japan. He came to my fight and it meant so much to have him there with me because he's always been very supportive of my boxing and the boxing of my team mates. When Black Skinny fought in Japan it was Satoshi who made his way to the fight location to cheer him on in the sea of Japanese fans cheering for Black Skinny's opponent.

Today I saw Satoshi again and this time I got to introduce him to my husband, Snickers.

Satoshi is only in Korea for a couple of days because of a friend's wedding he's to attend tomorrow but for tonight he was in the hands of Snickers and I. We took him to one of our favorite restaurants, a wicked coffee shop tucked away in the mountain side, shared one of our favorite secret spots in Cheonan, and took him to Ggum Guum to introduce him to Mi Nam. I can't remember the last time I chatted so much and for so long. Snickers literally had to stop me during dinner to remind me to eat. I just had so much to talk about with Satoshi. I was so happy to see him so eating was the last thing on my mind. "I've never seen Amy so happy and talkative!" Snickers repeatedly noted, and I was happy. I was so happy to see a great friend. A great friend who has always been understanding and supportive of my boxing. After we dropped him off and sad goodbye the whole evening started to replay in my mind and that's when I got sad.

Soon enough he'll be a full-sized beast!!!

The Canine Crew... Thursday, April 21

Today Snickers headed out on a three hour drive (one-way) to go pick up a dog he personally picked out to be the new security dog of the car dealership he's now working at. The dealership is a new shop, owned and operated by Snickers' best bud Wonder Boy.

Snickers loves babies. Two extra legs, no problem. If it's a baby he loves it. Just the other day Snickers turned to me and told me "I love Mi Nam, like honestly love him". It's taken him over two years to finally love Mi Nam but after a three hour drive back in the middle of the night with this new baby pup, he's convinced he loves it.

I for one don't like babies -- both two-legged and four-legged ones -- so when he told me he was coming home around 3am with this yelping pup I told him "either he or you can sleep in the house but not both!" With a full day of work at the daycare and then the private school, I wasn't about to let some overly-furry four-legged little one steal my last remaining hours of sleep, so it slept outside.

The new pup is one of three dogs that have been appointed as secuirty for the new car dealership but it's the only female. Mi Nam met this overly-furry gal early on Friday morning and was just as impressed as I was in it -- not impressed at all. I can't stand furry dogs. I don't like fur, especially long fur. I don't like body hair -- on people or on animals. Long fur screams smelly rainy days, hair clogs, hair left all over the floor, and high maintainance... no thanks.

So today the overly-furry little gal made her way to Suwon with Snickers where she met her two other canine coworkers. And today she was named, Panchi.

Writing the names of her and her two canine coworkers, I'm embarrassed. I had NOTHING to do with the naming of these three pups -- Panchi ("Pliers"), Mangchi ("Hammer") and Monkey. Ya, trust me, I'm still shaking my head at the nonscense of their names!!!

Have they no shame with using such names?

Monday, April 18, 2011

With my make-up washed away by the sweat and a full day of working with the daycare kids, boxing late in the evening and going home drenched in sweat is my life now.
I'm ready to call it a night by the time I leave boxing but check out Snickers. Somehow this freakishly hyper Korean-hottie finds some energy somewhere to jump around and joke around after training. I think he stores a bit of energy in his toes, I'm convinced of it... hahaha.

Bitter Sweet Revenge... Monday, April 18

Black Skinny losing his champion title was wrong.

It was just so wrong but we plan on getting it back. Phones are ringing already with word of a revenge fight on the table. However, with Black Skinny wanting to take a little break, it's not going to be him fighting for it but none other than my Snickers.

Snickers getting scheduled a revenge fight for the Korean Middle Weight Champion title?! Possibly. We've yet to hear back from KBC so keep your fingers crossed.

Honestly, this couldn't have come at a better time, not Black Skinny losing but Snickers being proposed for a fight that is. On Saturday evening Snickers and I sat down for a serious talk about his boxing and his dream to become a world champion. His dream is still very much alive and well but with KBC not scheduling him fights the steps and fights he needs to put under his belt just aren't happening.

We came up with a due date. June 15th is our due date.

If KBC doesn't schedule Snickers a fight in the next two months than Snickers is going to pack his bags and leave Korea. Distination... not sure but it's looking like either the Philippines or Japan, both of which we've got boxing connections and contacts in. After Black Skinny's fight on Saturday, I took Snickers aside and swore to him that I'd do anything and everything possible to fully support him, his boxing and his dream of making it big with boxing. So if sending him to another country for a few months or more to train and get those fights under his belt is what it means than so be it.

Initially, our plan for this year was to save up a sick amount of money. However, we quickly became so busy focusing on the financial prep needed for our future that we lost track of other things that are equally important for the future -- the now.

If Snickers wants to become a world champion boxer than the now is just as important if not MORE important to his future than what he does in a year from now. Today is the stepping stone for tomorrow and this revenge fight is a step in the right direction.

The two most important Koreans in my world -- my four-legged buddy and my beautiful husband.

Mind ya, with Mi Nam being also part French and Snickers being part strange, both are "fushion babies"... hahaha.

Dog On Drugs... Sunday, April 17

Mi Nam is a druggy... only joking, well not really. He's still on meds.

He jumped in the car today -- a first for him, usually he needs to be picked up -- and off we headed to the vet for his weekly vet appointment. He got two thimbs up from the vet and was sent home with a refill of his meds; a powdery drug that I simply stir into his food.

As for the rest of the day, not really much to write except for the fact that I went into clean-freak mode! When I'm home alone and bored, I do one of three things -- sleep, eat or clean. Today I cleaned... I cleaned everything and anything. I'm talking about moving the fridge to clean behind it, taking a part the oven, flipping over the couch, and hanging off the balcony for the sake of washing the windows. Snickers was working today but he returned home to one sparkling house and one super exhausted wife, me.

Punches were thrown and jaws were dropped today but not in the way we all expected or thought it'd play out.

A One-Man Fight... Saturday, April 16

I turned to him and said, "I don't ever want this to become of you too!"

Who I was talking to was Snickers and what I was referring to was a slumped over, overly exhausted, pushed to the max, and totally frustrated Black Skinny.

Black Skinny had a fight today and he lost -- he lost to himself.

His opponent was someone whom many questioned why he'd even accept such an unexperienced opponent, someone who clearly "shouldn't even be allowed in the same ring as him [Black Skinny]" as one fan noted.

A bunch of us headed out to Bucheon to watch the fight but many didn't show, saying that it was an expected win so instead of the three hour drive to come watch a one or two round fight, they'd wait for his return in Cheonan.

He returned -- we returned together -- but it wasn't the expected victorious return.

The fight ended in the second round and left us standing with dropped jaws, scratching our heads and wondering what the heck just happened. I stood there with tears in my eyes; I felt so bad for him. I noted that he lost to himself because he did. It wasn't his opponent's skill that ended the fight but Black Skinny's personal fight with juggling a full-time manual job with being a full-time dad and being a full-time boxer. He had about a month and a half to train and lose about 10kg for this particular fight but with all that was on his plate -- daytime job and being a father -- his late nights and early morning starts were painfully exhausting, leaving him running on empty and miserable.

They say boxing in Korea is a "young man's sport" and its true but not in the reason you'd expect it to be. It's a young man's sport because unless you're a student being financially supported by your parents and with only schooling and training on your plate, it's so hard to do boxing professionally as an adult, as a career. I won't get into it again because I've mentioned it before but there just isn't good money in Korea for boxers. Black Skinny is a perfect example of the harsh reality of Korean boxing.

I felt so heartbroken today, having seen my team mate fall off the pedestal he's always sat on in so many of our books.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
How can we change Korean boxing?

I prize myself on being one tough cookie, but to tell you the truth, when you've got two champion boxers as team mates -- one of which is my husband, the other being a close friend -- it's easy to stir up trouble cause I know they have my back.

You all know my husband (on the left here) and that's is Black Skinny on the right. This Saturday Black Skinny will be taking on and taking down his opponent in a title match. It's going to be good!!!

Tune into MBC ESPN Sports around 3pm this Saturday.
