1. Have you ever woken up and had that something-is-terribly-wrong feeling flood over you yet you have no idea what it is that is wrong? Today I woke up to that. I instantly knew something was wrong but didn’t know what. My immediate concern was Mi Nam. I picked him up, checked him over but he appeared to be safe and sound. I hadn’t woken up late, the stove wasn’t on, my computer was turned off, and everything appeared to be exactly the way I had left it last night. Then it hit me, today I have a meeting at the Canadian Embassy in Seoul to get my Canadian police background check notarized.
2. My police check was what was wrong… so wrong in fact that it was no where to be found! I panicked. For the last month it’s been sitting beside looking at me from my desk top but today, when I went to get it, it wasn’t there. I had to get going to school but I searched my office and where I thought I may have misplaced it… no such luck. And with less than two weeks until my work visa expires, this was definitely not a funny thing, this is a legal thing.
3. On route to school I called up Kicks. She reassured me that I’d find it, “You have to find it” she said. “I know, I know” I responded. “But what happens if I don’t?” I asked. There was a pause and then she repeated, “You have to find it”. My options here if I lost it are pretty much limited but I do have one option: leave Korea. A weekend get-away to Hong Kong would buy me time to get another criminal record background check done. I’d be here on a traveling visa but at least I would be legal here.
4. I showed up at school looking like I had just seen a ghost and, need less to say, this weighed heavily on me all morning and so I was so out of the loop with things. I forgot all about my photocopied handouts and ended up having to sprint it back to my office in high heels and a suit… not exactly training gear… hahaha. My students loved the free entertainment value that came with my late arrival to class because the distance between my office and today’s class is ten minutes walking (one way) and well I went there and back in about five minutes. I showered them with a million or so “I’m so sorrys”. Got a lot of two thumbs up for my “morning stiletto sprint”… hahaha.
5. During silent reading time in class, one of the articles I handed out was titled “The Bad Luck Theory” and I found it particularly appropriate for my situation today. In the article, the author talks about how people have convinced themselves that they have bad luck while others have good luck, when in fact the scientists quoted in this article claim there is no such thing as luck. Personally, I never believed in luck but I found it particularly interesting how these scientists explained “luck”. They claimed that it all had to do with the power of the mind. People had such luck because they believed they had it and so the scientists claimed that by thinking something you in fact can put it into motion.
6. After a full day of eagerly trying to push out any negative thoughts about that criminal background police check form, I arrived back at home feeling much better. Kicks was right, I just needed to clear my head and think…. I found the form!!! I wasn’t able to make my appointment in Seoul but I didn’t care. I had found the form and I still had time to make another appointment. I did my usual happy dance when I’m overly excited about something… hahaha. Mi Nam, of course, jumped in on the excitement and now I have the scratches all on my legs to prove his participation in the happy dance… hahaha.
7. My cute little hair shop girl has packed up and moved locations, mind you, she didn’t really pack up, it’s more like she just left and three other Korean girls came and took over the shop because everything looks pretty much the same, minus my hair shop cutie.
8. Finally after weeks of Junior Mint getting on me about not cutting my hair, I finally went in for a trim. And in about fifteen minutes I went from looking like a young adult to looking like a preteen. I have bangs again. I’ve gotten a lot of “You look so cute now” comments but at the age of 28, cute isn’t exactly what I’m going for. Regardless, the cut only cost me $8 so I can’t really complain.
9. Heading into training early today meant I got to train with the high school and middle school boys crew; they’re always hilariously fun. Today Milk Dud, Little Miss Sunshine and I had them do some silly drills. My little buddy Wan was there and so I cheered him on but he got smoked in each competition and well, losing in a competition at the boxing ring means more than just wearing that label. It also means getting the beats… literally. Wan lost three times which meant he got plenty of smacks on the butt with the wooden stick!
10. Day three of I’m-not-talking-to-you ended with him talking to me.
QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Do you believe in luck?
QUOTE OF THE DAY...
Depend on the rabbit's foot if you will, but remember it didn't work for the rabbit.
-- R.E. Shay
As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).
After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.
Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

...and what did he say?!?!
Oh the suspense!
I always knew that about luck. I remember watching a cartoon about a bunch of kids who lived near the beach in cali and surfed. The main character had a surfing competition, bought a lucky sea shell from a friend, and won. Then his friend told him it was a random shell, not lucky, and showed him it was all about confidence.
