1. How has bodybuilding and fitness helped and/or changed your family life?
Boxing in Korea has been the foundation to which my friendships have really been
built upon. I am tight with those I train with at the boxing club -- I even married someone from the club! And with me being minus my family here in Korea, many of my teammates, as well as my coach, have become like a second family to me.
2. Other than the obvious benefits (appearance, health, etc.), how has bodybuilding and fitness improved your overall life?
Being so passionate about fitness has really helped me overcome some struggles here in Korea -- like heartbreak and homesickness. Deciding to take on boxing was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. It took me from being an insecure, somewhat pudgy and weak girl to that of a confident, toned and much stronger woman. The effects of my boxing have ultimately seeped into all aspects of my life. To put it simply, I am so much happier now because I am more confident and I know now it's me who controls my life.
3. Do you tell your friends and/or family about your fitness goals?
Of course! Telling my friends and family about my fitness goals serves not only as a kind of pressure (cause now they know and may be watching) but it can also serve as a means of encouragment, not only to me but to them.
4. What tips would you give to others to help them stay motivated over the long-term?
With all the distractions out there it's important to keep your eye on the goal cause nothing worth fighting for comes without a struggle.
5. What do you do before your workout to get motivated and energized?
I use to have snapshots of my favourite bodybuilders taped onto my fridge to keep me motivated and glued to clean eating. These days however, my motivation comes more locally. It comes from looking over and noting my husband's sick six-pack. He constantly trains hard and so he's an inspiration to me. Nothing comes easy and just as hard as it is for me to get up and go train, he also experiences that feeling too. Nothing worth fighting for comes easy.
It's all a matter of how bad do you want it!
As for staying energized -- clean eating and rockin' tunes on my iPod!!!
6. What do you think about people who "grunt" loudly while working out? Do you do it?
I'm a grunter... I admit it so I've got nothing to say but all the more power to ya.. hehehe.
7. What type of outfit do you usually wear when you workout? Why?
Adidas all the way baby!!! It's stylish, functional, pratical and so comfortable. I usually am seen at my boxing gym wearing Adidas Climalite pants... they're awesome cause they keep shape, don't show sweat spots and let my skin breath. I am usually wearing an Adidas tank top with a thick Adidas hooded sweater on top... with the hood on, over top my Adidas toque. The layers keep me warm in the cold boxing gym when it’s winter but also let me work up a sweet.
8. What type of person at your gym annoys you the most? Why?
People who don't seem to understand that going to a gym means working out, not looking pretty and being afraid to sweat. They waste space and, at my boxing club where space is limited, my patience with wanting to kick them to the curb is tested too often.
QUESTION OF THE DAY...
What does fitness mean to you
QUOTE OF THE DAY...
As I see it, every day you do one of two things: build health or produce disease in yourself.
-- Adelle Davis
As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).
After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.
Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.
