It wasn’t so long ago that running was my pain-in-the-butt that I use to do only because Junior Mint told me to do so. I’d put in my limited time in on the treadmill at Hongik first thing in the morning so that I could get it over with. Now days running has become a big passion of mine. I must admit that I still hate the treadmill but now for a whole different reason. I hate the treadmill because it makes for such a controlled and easier run. Running outside is the way to go. Outside you compete with the natural ups and downs of the terrain and the weather. And then there’s the fact that it’s kind of hard to cheat yourself out of exercising during a run outside compared to a treadmill that you can simple pound down on the stop button and step off. Even if you stop running while on your outdoor run you still have to make your way home and don’t forget that even walking IS exercise!
Ever since Snickers convinced me to run outdoors I’ve been hooked. These days I’ve been running 7kms six days a week with one of my days consisting of a longer (10km) run.
Tonight I headed out for a late night run and ended up running into one of my former coworkers who has also found a love for running. I was on my second lap around the Dankook lake when I spotted him on the path. Off went my iPod and away we started chatting and jogging together.
“Want to go for another lap?” I asked him. “Sure” he replied and with that we went another lap, bringing my run for today a total of 13kms.
I love my boxing, I love my running and I love being fit and healthy. I of course would love to kick my fitness up a notch and I know exactly where my weakness is – my weakness lies in diet, more specifically my weakness lies in cooking. I can cook, that’s not the problem. My problem is that I can’t find many of the ingredients I need to cook certain recipes I adore.
Coconut butter, dried tomatoes, nonfat cottage cheese, whole wheat tortillas, whole wheat pitas, pumpkinseed oil, unsweetened apple sauce, cumin, natural peanut butter, brown rice, Ezekiel bread, and tuna packed in water. As of this past month, Costco in Daejon no longer sells its massive bag of frozen blueberries, meaning I’ll have to pay an arm and a leg if I can find them somewhere else. 100% Whey Protein mix means either an evening trip out at the American Air Force Base or trekking an hour out to a store I’ve heard of but have yet to see. I can find my beloved spinach but it’s all bunched together and dies in a couple of days… definitely not all pretty and clean like that sold in Canada.
Snickers thinks I can’t cook but I argue that if I had the ingredients I’d be able to blow his mind with master pieces in the kitchen… hahaha.
QUESTION OF THE DAY...
What exercise do you love doing?
QUOTE OF THE DAY...
There's no easy way out. If there were, I would have bought it. And believe me, it would be one of my favorite things!
-- Oprah Winfrey
As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).
After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.
Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

It's super easy to find brown rice in Korea (Lotte Mart, E-MArt, Homeplue and even Lotte Super have it - it's called현미 They also have tuna packed in water, it just takes a while to spot it.
Kim's Club (over near E-Mart) has cumin, dried tomatoes and Natural Peanut BUtter is at Costco - although not always at the Daejeon location.
Hey Kat,
Ya, I still have the brown rice I bought in the Philippines actually but thanks for the inside scoop. I've seen tuna packed in water -- blue wrapping -- but haven't seen it around lately. I've never heard of Kim's Club but I'll have to check it out, for sure. As for Costco, I really should drop by the Seoul one cause the Daejon one doesn't even sell my massive bag of blueberries anymore... dang!
The blueberries were there yesterday...maybe they were just out when you went.
Hey Kat,
They were?! Dang!!! Am heading off to check out the Seoul on either today or Monday.
Hey I still have your Tide... hahaha.
