As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

I Never Did Like Giraffes... Tuesday, November 2

Stepped back into the ring yesterday, and despite the fact that tying up the laces on my right boxing boot hurt like a kick to the head, it felt good to get back to boxing. Having said this though, tonight I wasn’t able to go boxing. Pressure to clock in more hours with my running stepped up a notch today when one of my sponsors called to ask about my running time.

The other day I got word that a former coworker of mine completed a half marathon last weekend short of one hour and thirty minutes. That’s awesome but honestly, with only two weeks till my half marathon and me struggling with trying to up my time, I really didn’t need to hear this. I’m very competitive and though I don’t care to beat his time, hearing that it smoked my best time was rough. Mind ya, with his freakishly long legs, standing in at over six feet, he cheated. He’s a giraffe-of-a-man and you can’t tell me his legs that stretch for miles aren’t a huge advantage. My legs are Polish, God doesn’t make Polish legs in extra long; he makes them in extra short though. Oh blah, blah, blah… congrats to him but don’t tell me again his race time thanks.

Getting an email today from the company who employs me to tutor at Samsung Cheonan, telling me that they want to come out and cheer me on for my half marathon, was awesome. It kicked Giraffe Boy’s news and negative vibes to the curb.
Facts from 2009’s 7th Annual Sports Seoul Half Marathon
179 female runners participated in the half marathon.
The first female who crossed the finish line, came in at 1 hour and 25 minutes.
75 of the 179 (42%) female runners clocked in under the 2 hour mark.
Only 6 of the 179 (3%) female athletes were foreign women.
If I had done this run and clocked in at my run time of 2:03, I would have been 84th.

Called the half marathon info line and low and behold I’m like Madonna, no last name needed… hahaha. I had to ask whether or not they’d be sending me my half marathon t-shirt and number in the mail or if I’d be picking it up on race day. It was only a two minute conversation, mind ya it was all in Korean so that’s never really easy, and when she went to ask me about my registration I told her my name was Amy. “Oh, yes Amy. You’re doing the half marathon, yes?” I couldn’t help but laugh, laugh at the realization of just how many times here in Korea I’ve used only my first name to sign up for things or whatnot. Even my housing agreement, which is a legal document that I had to sign on several different spots were done with only my first name.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Any other female foreigners heading to the 8th annual Sports Seoul Half Marathon?

I'm really glad you're ok. When I saw the pictures of you in the hospital I was really worried.

Hi Fabi,
Hahaha.. oh ya?! Hey, how was living in China like?... and what about Italy? I'd love to visit Italy but I don't think I could handle all that pasta... hahaha.

Hey B... Becca?
Thanks. Ya, I am okay but my leg is still very sore to the touch and tying my boxing boot laces means leaving them loose.

hahaha Amyyy, of course u can handle all types of our pasta :)) U are welcomed everytime in this crazy country.
Living in china was so good, I mean, as good as living in Korea..yeah, I experienced both of them (Korea just few months, China 1 year) but I always thought living so far from home, in a very different culture, was good, too much good, maybe because I had "him"with me..God bless China because there I met him...
Who knows, maybe if I go back to seoul, and u still there we can talk better about everything! Wish you are doing fine :)
keep up the good work dear Amy.
Ps- little, (and maybe stupid for you) advice. I think the song Secret (by Seal) is sooo good to listen when u think about somebody who u really love and who's so far away from you..at least for me is like this :'(
Love and hug, AMy.
