As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Step Aside Santa, Let ME Do the Giving... Tuesday, November 8

At exactly 12:49pm I got scheduled my next boxing fight.

Saturday, December 19 is fight day!!!

... just in time to dish out some Christmas beats, nice.

It’ll be my first 6-rounder fight and I’ll be stepping into the ring with Seoul’s very own homegrown mini flyweight, Shin Gun Ju, age 21. She’s had five fights, one of which was a draw, another was a lost, and one of her three wins was by knock-out. After a couple of calls between myself, Junior Mint, KBC, and my opponent’s coach, the bout weigh-in was finally agreed upon and was set at 48.5kgs (106.7lbs).

It’s been so long since my last fight – too long – and I seriously was a hair-width away from jumping on a train and resigning with the underground ring in south South Korea. I’ve been itching for a fight for too long and having various fight promoters call me, inquiring about Panty Boy and Snickers, my itch for a fight had become more like a full-blown rash. I needed a fight and now I got it.

My huge high from today’s mid-day phone conversation was still going strong long into the evening, so when I showed up at boxing at 9:30pm I was still very giddy and overly hyper. This weekend I have my half marathon but no sooner will I get that off my plate but then it’ll be boxing, boxing, and more boxing. Junior Mint always likes to push the limits and bombard his boxers with an overly intense month of training the month leading up to the fight and, honestly, I love the intensity of it all. I love the whole anticipation of the fight. Whether it’s coach being all in-my-face at training or bombarding my phone with text messages or calls, telling me to go to sleep early or come out to training; daily weigh-ins; the demanding dieting; the pushing-the-limits and overloading my schedule with training (boxing, running and weight training); crashing from pure exhaustion after training; the added pressure from sponsors, or the fact that it'll mean I'll breath, eat, sleep, and think only boxing like a mad obsession, I love it.

I love it all.

It’s anyone’s game at this point and that’s the real beauty of it. It’s anyone’s game up until when the last round finishes, when the judges then count up the points, and both she and I stand hand-in-hand with the ref, waiting for the judges to call out the scores. It won’t be until the ref lifts one of our hands that we will know whose game it really was.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Tis the season to give, right?

Hey Amy,
That's great news that you are going to have a bout. Of course I'll be rooting for you and admire your training dedication. Once you get the marathon out of the way you can concentrate on the boxing. So glad to hear it. :)
