“Ohhh… knock out!” I’ve been known to blurt out whenever they give me an unexpectedly smart or smarta$$ answer.
I really like these kids. They are the highlight of so many of my days.
In my beginner’s class, I’ve got Katie with her new little dyed auburn permed hair that my hands seem to be so overly drawn to. Ben who’s my right-hand little man and who always makes me crack up with his spontaneous misuse of English, like “I’m dirty” as supposed to what he meant, “I’m thirsty”. There’s Sophia who’s got the straight-across-her-forehead bangs and apparently tries to hide under them. Next, there’s Chloe who’s the younger sister to one of my other class students but who’s nothing like her sister. And then there’s Jinny, a student much older than all my others, who always brings a coffee to class for me and who really has taken the imitative to help be like an assistant in class.
And then there’s my advanced class. David is my right-hand man who goes way out of his way to make me feel comfortable. Whether it’s him bringing me a snack during snack time, him always being my partner in class, or him arriving to class early to chat with me and then being the last one standing outside, waving me goodbye as I drive away, he’s such a great student to have. Then there’s the shy Juliet who I’m always teasing her about her name, asking her if she’s yet to find her Romeo. Ava is also a shy student but I don’t think it’s so much her shyness that keeps her quiet as it is the fact that her brain is working on overdrive. She’s brilliant and she doesn’t even know it. Ruby is the sister to Chloe from my beginner’s class. I love her cheeks and the fact that she so easily blushes when I tell her that she’s so pretty. Katherine is the sleepy head of the class so I often call her my Sleeping Beauty. Ann is Katherine’s sister and both sisters are in this particular class. Originally Ann was in my other class but we thought we’d bump her up and so far so good. Last but not least is Vicky. She totally kicked butt the other day with my take-home review test and she’s really coming into her own which is nice because she use to always second guess herself and hold back.
Hanging out with my Church Kiddies outside of class was interesting in that it allowed me to see a whole other side of each of them. Instantly so many of them went all shy when the man in charge of bringing us all together joined us for dinner. He speaks English very well and I think that somewhat intimidates them. I had my little Katie to the left of me and David and Ben sat across from me.
It never seems to amaze me how Koreans can incorporate games into anything and everything they’re doing. Tonight an eating challenge game was brought to the table at Mr. Pizza. The challenge being that whoever lost at “Rock, Paper, and Scissors” would have to eat a piece of pizza drowned in Tabasco hot sauce. David lost two rounds and Ava lost one.

I felt my tummy turn just watching them eat the drenched slice and I could smell that sauce even long after I left the restaurant; it was just so overpowering. It was nasty. David ended up having to go to the bathroom and I felt so bad for him. He’s such a sport though so props to him.
That’s just the kind of kids my Church Kiddies are… nothing short of awesome.
