As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

A Check-Up Before his Check-Up... Friday, April 8

Just checking in with you about Mi Nam.

I've been getting so many comments and emails about Mi Nam -- thanks for all your concern.

Tomorrow he's going in for his follow-up appointment regarding his hip dysplasia. He's been on meds for the past week and though he's had his ups and downs with the meds, I'm happy to say he's doing well. He's been taking meds twice a day and his once so fun walks and play time outside has been drastically restricted to only short bathroom breaks. Mi Nam may be considered a small dog but he weighs in at 24lbs and carrying my 24lb baby outside twice a day for bathroom breaks is a bit rough, not to mention I'm sure he's a bit heartbroken because he can't run and play. His mind says run and play but his body just isn't letting him.

As the days continued on this week he's gotten a lot better and tonight I tempted the vet's words of advice and took Mi Nam out for a walk. He loved it but after about ten minutes or so he did stop. He stopped and just stood there looking at me. I knelt down beside him, in the middle of the path, and scooped him up. He was obviously too uncomfortable to continue walking. This whole situation kind of freaks me out, I mean just a week ago today he was jumping around and running outside with Snickers. He appeared perfectly fine but then suddenly he fell into all this pain and now he's walking like he's an old man in need of a cane or wheelchair.

Snickers continually tells me to stay positive but I hate watching Mi Nam suffer like this. I'm optimistic about tomorrow but am praying that I'll wake up tomorrow and this will all be over and done with, like a bad dream.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...

Who knew that dog saliva can mend a broken heart?

Is he limping at all? Hip dysplasia is usually very obvious. It's not just pain. I find it odd that he doesn't have any obvious symptoms. My boy has hip dysplasia and you can see him limp on and off, or his legs/hips sometimes "slip" and look weird when he walks. It lasts a few seconds and then he's back to walking normally, but it's there.

Unfortunately, hip dysplasia is forever. I hate it too and wish it would go away, but I've accepted that this is it and we have to live with it. Sorry you're in the same situation and hopefully he's not in pain.

Hello Anonymous,
He was kind of limping, more shaking at the hips than anything actually. Sometimes when I was walking him he'd just stop and stand there. He'd often try to sit but moving his leg and hip joint was just too painful so he'd stand there like a stiff statue. I know the meds he's taking doesn't cure his situation but he's definitely doing so much better now that he's on them. Not only is he back to running and jumping but he's also back to putting all his weight on his back to legs so that he can jump up and greet me when I come in the door.
