As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Highlights of the Day... Friday, October 13

1. Optimistic about today, I jumped into Mr PE Teacher's SUV and zoomed off to school. Well, my optimisim was crushed with my first period elementary class (grade 6 students). I'm use to some of the boys acting out but today the class consisted of 14 good students and 7 students from hell. I'm serious, they were so terrible!
2. I made the 7 bad boys sit on the window ledge with their arms up in the air but apparently they thought it was a joke. They were so distracting and so finally I stopped the whole class and asked the class what should I do. The students suggested various means of torture. They voted that I should either beat or kick them but I am always uneasy with the thought of touching them like that so instead I pinched their arms. They skwirmed and it was working for awhile until they turned it into a competition to see who could with stand the pinching.
3. Finally I gave up. I was so frustrated and so I sent a student to go get their homeroom teacher... Mrs. Beating Queen. She's super sweet to me but has a side of her that's pure evil! As soon as the seven bad boys saw her coming, they quickly straightened up and started getting nervous. She took them away and they returned red in the face and crying. I think I was more sorry than they were though. I felt so sad for them and wanted to hug them but I knew they wouldn't learn.
4. Thankfully my grade 5 class was super cool for me today. The girls all bombarded me with hugs and "I love you"s. At free time some of the girls gave me a much needed back massage and so I thanked them by promising them that I'd treat them to a game of soccer next class.
5. Bryan, the ring leader of the class, told me that he missed me and that was so sweet. I think he had a hard Chusuk. Both his mother and father have deserted him and I know that his grandparents are really rough with him. Thinking about him makes me sad though cause he has had a hard childhood. He's a bad student but is one of my favorite cause even though he gives me a hard time, I sense his desparation and so I wish I could take him away from his situation. I try to be like an older sister to him.
6. Returned to my middle school with 3 1/2 hours to kill! Dang! Spent most of my time with my eyes peeled to my computer screen as I did my online Korean language lessons.
7. Today the school had a PTA meeting and Mrs. Jung fled the scene and so I was put in the totally uncomfortable position of dealing with some of the questioning mothers.
8. Then, if that wasn't akward enough, one teacher was sent over to talk to Mrs. Jung about the set-up of our English classroom. But, with Mrs. Jung gone, I had to deal with her and so that was a headache.
9. After school I totally crashed. I woke up around 11pm to the sound of someone trying to unlock my door via the door code. I didn't know what to do. I frooze but my heart was beating so fast. Then the door opened... it was Ryan.
10. Totally didn't realize it was Friday the 13th. Turns out Ryan had a really rough Friday the 13th. Not only did his dad get into a car accident but some dude poured oil on his hat, his scooter died on his way home so he had to pay some truck driver to take it all the way back to Seoul. AND, if that wasn't bad enough, the driver scratched his scooter, he won't be able to get it back for a few days and later on in the evening he was sick!

QUESTION OF THE DAY....
Where are my students and who are these evil creatures?

QUOTE OF THE DAY...
You're talking about him as if he were a human being. That part of him died years ago.

That's one (although there are so many) of the problems with corporal punishment. Once you resort to it, nothing else seems to work very well. I feel for you. The teaching assistant at the language center where I worked sometimes used to come in to womp my poor students. I left the room because I couldn't bear it.
