1. Held a mini quiz game for my level 3 classes. Class 3-1 didn’t care too much about it but class 3-2 got so excited and were jumping up and down! Wow! It was boys against girls. It was a close match but the boys won.
2. In class 3-2 there’s one girl who never speaks English, nor does she listen to me either. I had told her to be quiet. I told her in Korean and in English but she still continued. I made a smart remark and said, “Oh, maybe she’s Chinese”. Apparently all were listening to me and so they busted out laughing. Well, much to everyone’s surprise, she happened to be the most active player in our game. She almost won the game for her team too! So when she answered the first question I was so shocked. I yelled out “Hurray for the Chinese student!” Well… the nickname stuck and I think she really likes it too. ㅋㅋㅋ
3. Like always, my class games always get complaints from fellow teachers. I know my class always tends to get loud but we’re having fun. Shouldn’t learning be fun?! Well, that’s exactly what we’re doing. We laughed so much that by the time the bell rang, my tummy hurt from giggling. ㅋㅋㅋ
4. What started off as a little problem turned into a HUGE scene in my class 2-1. Tony (the school clown) was giving me a really hard time and so I finally had enough. I told him to leave but he refused, so, I gave him two options: option A, walk out of the classroom, option B, I’ll carry him out of the classroom. Either way he has to leave. He wasn’t listening but picked option B.
5. Emptied my pockets, took off my shoes, rolled up my sleeves, and then picked him up. I wasn’t expecting him to be so squirmy and so I ended up kind of dragging him out of the classroom with his classmates hollering and laughing. He struggled to get back into the class and so I locked both doors, the windows and even closed the blinds. After the whole ordeal, I asked them, “Who’s next?”. They didn’t know whether to laugh or not but it sure set the record straight… I will not accept disruptive students in my class.
6. For my after school F.S. Talents club (drama club), I taught them a game called “Mofia”. It’s a cool game based on body language. I think I kind of scared them though with my loud “I’ve been shot” death scene in which I fell off the chair and yelled way too loud... it was alittle too dramatic...ㅋㅋㅋ.
7. Kim Tae made a visit out to the sticks to my school and got to see some of my co-workers. He met the notorious Mr. Jo who, when Kim Tae arrived, was making fun of me (like always)..ㅋㅋㅋ. Bonus points for the 첨치 김밥.
8. Made a visit out to Sue’s house where he father has returned. Last week he was rushed into surgery for his neck. He’ll be off work for the next month but Sue’s loving the fact that it means her hero is home 24/7 for a month.
9. Sue, Sue, Sue… I love Sue! This mini-Korean is my pride and joy of Cheonan! Today I tested out her English. It was out of 215 and I had expected her to get 210… she got perfect! I was excited and so I was all about the high-fives and hugs galore!
10. Day two of my vow and I feel awful. I’m convinced he doesn’t care.
QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Shouldn't learning be fun?
QUOTE OF THE DAY...
In every person who comes near you look for what is good and strong; honor that; try to imitate it, and your faults will drop off like dead leaves when their time comes.
-- John Ruskin
As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).
After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.
Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.
