1. Happy Birthday to my oldest brother….Troy! Hope you have fun doing whatever people living out in the boonies, the sticks, do for fun…ㅋㅋㅋ. I've been praciticing the ever so humorous "Message from Zoon" Toys R' Us birthday song but I never got to sing it to him today. I can't find his phone number... sorry.
2. One of my favourite students told me it’s his birthday on Wednesday and I did the mistake of asking him how old he’ll be turning. If you know anything about “Korean age”, it’s kind of confusing. Here’s a quick explanation…. They think that because a baby is in the womb for almost a year, when it is born, they consider it 1 year old. Then, when the new year (Jan. 1st) comes, that same baby turns 2. So basically that means everyone’s birthday is irrelevant and we all turn one year older on January 1st.
The confusing part… this means that a baby born on January 1st, 2006 and a baby born on December 31st, 2006 will both be 2 years old come January 1st, 2007 even though the first baby is 1 year old and the second baby is only 2 days old.
3. Found my “Dear Abby” … her name is Maria. She’s recently emailed me a few times via my homepage and now she’s my “Dear Maria”. We vent to each other about relationships and have aired our dirty laundry in front of each other.
4. Ryan dropped a bomb on me when he texted me he’s moving out of Cheonan... THIS WEEK... I was speechless.
5. Like a total fool, I jumped on the bus and raced off to Seoul. After six days of impatiently waiting, I went to Seoul to get what I was deserving of, an “I’m sorry”.
6. Murphy’s law… after 6 days of silence, I finally start a text message conversation with Ryan and my phone dies!!!
7. Discovered phone charging booths. I had once heard about them. You wait there while your phone charges (pretty self-explanatory) and so tonight I desparately searched one out. Viola!
8. Finally stopped text messaging at 4am and gave up all hope of getting that “I’m sorry”.
9. Contemplated moving back to Canada but then remembered the reverse culture shock I experienced last year when I briefly visited Canada. I don't want to be overwhelmed with too much change.... baby steps.
10. Top 10 reasons why I won’t give up Korea because of a guy:
1. My dream wasn’t Ryan, it was Korea and so I’m not about to let him rob me of that.
2. Kim Tae and Byung Hyuk.
3. My students... they're my pride and joy of Korea.
4. I love my job… the staff, the teachers, early morning rides with PE teacher, the dynamic working environment, my awesome classroom, the wicked holidays, Konglish, staff outings, and jokes in the staff room.
5. My favourite mini Korean… Sue. She's awesome and says the funniest things!
6. I really enjoy having fun with the Korean language, speaking Konglish and trying to learn more.
7. My continual fascination and curiosity to learn more about Korea’s deep traditions and culture.
8. It’s pretty cool experiencing living outside of everything that once was the norm for me.
9. Korean food.... so yummy!
10. Life is simpler here… I work, eat, play, work-out, study Korean… repeat.
