1. Bought Mr. PE Teacher coffee today (coffee in a can). Little did he realize it was hot coffee and so he nearly had a heart attack in the car today when he tried to drink it… one shot! Coffee went everywhere!!!
2. On the way to school today I finally got around to calling my brother Troy in Canada and wishing him a happy birthday. I know my excuse that I couldn’t find his phone number doesn’t justify why I took so long to call him but it’s really been a rough week.
3. Never thought I’d be so happy to hear Troy’s voice on the phone. When we were young, I use to adore this guy but then somewhere along the way, we drifted apart. Regardless, talking to him was the happiest moment of my week.
4. In my first level classes we worked on classroom rules and so I had them do a mini partner project in which they had to make a poster about one classroom rule. Turns out my humour is wearing off on them and so their poster presentations today were quite amusing.
5. Jess amused the class with his rule: “You must not sleep in the classroom or Ms. B will use her English magic stick on you!”… ok, now let me explain this one. Here in Korea the teachers are notoriously known for hitting the students. Most use a wooden stick. I found this long wooden chopstick and so I called it my “English magic stick”. When students are acting out or interrupting class, I simply point the stick at them and make a zapping noise (my poor imitation of Star Wars...ㅋㅋㅋ) or give them a little flick on the arm, just to get their attention an it’s seems to work… most of the time.
6. My "English magic stick" failed me today with class 1-2 and so after a frustrating class, I sat down for coffee with my co-teacher and asked what I should do. Her response, “Just hit them”. Hmm…
7. What started out as a chat about classroom management with Mrs. Chung turned into relationship 1-0-1. She’s always played the optimist but today she was the devil’s advocate. “Just forget about him” she stated. Easier said than done.
8. After what feels like weeks of fighting and non-stop arguing, Ryan attempted to switch roles and play the hero in today’s story by surprising me at school. Little did he know, I had planned to be picked up by a friend and so his little surprise almost created quite a scene!
9. Talked to Sue’s mom today and she’s apparently loving the fact that her husband is home on sick-leave. Apparently his injury is a miracle in disguise and has definitely re-kindled the romance in their life…. Afternoon dancing in the halls, candlelight picnics in the family room, breakfast in bed… hmm. So sweet!
10. She was absolutely glowing!
QUESTION OF THE DAY...
How come you always forget your stuff for my class but you never forget to put on pants?
QUOTE OF THE DAY...
Learning is not compulsory...neither is survival.
-- Edwards Deming
As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).
After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.
Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.
