1. Two weeks ago I had agreed to head out to Seoul to see my friend, Wonder Woman. The original plan was that we’d have a mini girls’ night out, just her, me, and this other gal named Christine.
2. The restaurant we met at was this Japanese/Korean fusion restaurant that was absolutely stunning. The décor was dark wood, simple, very modern in style and the atmosphere was very romantic. I felt kind of awkward being in such a “couple place” with friends though.
3. Plans with Wonder Women never turn out simple nor do they turn out as planned. Not only had her bogus directions take me on a 2 & 1/2 hour wild goose hunt, she had invited guys to our “girls’ night” and then, to further complicate things, she then informed me that she arranged a blind date for ME and he’ll be arriving in one hour… WHAT?!
4. Well, Mr. Blind Date Man showed up and “blah” was my reaction…ha, ha, ha. I wasn’t particularly attracted to him nor was I even interested in this whole surprise blind date set-up in the first place but I tried my best to give him the benefit of a doubt. Within 10 minutes, I knew I didn’t like him and so I spent the next hour faking a smile. Wonder Woman thought I'd like him because he's Korean but he was Korean/Australian and definitely the farthest thing from being Korean. I felt more Korean them him!
5. Mr. Blind Date Man attempted a few times to stir up a conversation with me but his conversations left me looking at the window and hoping to soon be jumping out of it. So instead, I turned to Christine and started chatting with her. Our discussion focused on Korean men. She’s not particularly fond of them and so we sat there rating the men at the restaurant. I know, it’s rather highschoolish but hey, it’s not like my conversation with Mr. Blind Date Man was so exciting.
6. The joking definitely took a nasty spin when Mr. Blind Date Man turned to me and asked me, “Which do you prefer, Korean men or Western men?” I knew what he was eluding to and I didn’t respect that because a. I’m a lady and b. NO gentleman would ever ask a lady that question. I didn’t know what to say and so, jokingly, I asked him the same question. All of a sudden he reacted to me as if I was a pervert!!! What’s up with that!
7. That’s when I decided to change plans. I told them I had to go tend to my dog but the truth was I was definitely not going to waste away my Friday night trying to pretend I’m enjoying myself. Mr. Blind Date Man walked me to a taxi but I jumped in and raced off to Seoul Station with just enough time to catch the last train to Cheonan… perfect!
8. Showed up in Cheonan shortly after midnight and joined up with Kim Tae at a local hangout. He was there with his friends Ki Jung, Myung Yun, and Eun Sun. I’ve met Myung Yun before and so this time around he was quite comfortable asking me a million and one questions…ㅋㅋㅋ.
9. Myung Yun was quite suspicious of Kim Tae and my friendship. He’s convinced we’re more than just friends and I agree… Kim Tae is my awesome friend…ㅋㅋㅋ. That’s my story and I’m leaving it at that… for now ;)
10. My night ended in the wee early morning hours but it was great. It felt so good to be back in Cheonan, my comfort zone, surrounded by people that I really like. So although the majority of my night was retarded, the ending was perfect!
QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Where did you learn your manners... or better yet, where did you lose them?
QUOTE OF THE DAY...
The test of good manners is to be able to put up pleasantly with bad ones.
-- Wendell L. Willkie
As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).
After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.
Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.
