1. Classes continue to be short and sweet... making them even extra sweet. My two hour break in between my first class and second class turned into a three hour break, allowing me to go home and clean up my house for the KBS film crew that will be arriving later today.
2. I got the note, seriously, I did and no, I'm not an ignorant foreigner here in Korea. The other day I got a note posted on my door. It stated that they were going to wax the hall floors today from 12:30pm to 5pm. I left my house around 12:15pm, thinking I would beat the due time... nope. Swung open my door to about an inch of bubbly liquid and people in knee high rain boots. Thankfully one of the older men came to help me make my way to the stairs but they all gave me dirty looks and I knew they were thinking, "Ah, dumb foreigner." Nice.
3. On Wednesday I had met the KBS writer and so I anticipated a hard time today considering she didn't speak any English and I'd have no one to help me out with the language. At 2:30pm I went back to my office to meet up with her. She wasn't there but instead, there was a crew of 4 people. The guy I had met on Wednesday had come, along with a camera crew, a female assistant, and an interpreter. They've asked me to speak as much Korean as possible but I'm relieved that I have the interpreter for added support. I was particularly curious about the interpreter, too. She was a Filipino gal who's been in Korea for about 14 years, is married to a Korean man and together they have 2 children... and her Korean rocks!!! Ah... one day that will be me. Not too sure about the two kids though. Still recovering from the weekend in Hell.
4. At first glance of me in my stiletto heels, pin-stripe pencil skirt, and silk top, the assistant turned to the interpreter and said, "She's a boxer? She looks more like she is into cross stitching." Cross stitching?! Oh gosh... my mother is into cross stitching. We all had a huge laugh over her comment and so I told her, "If I look like a cross-stitcher, then I take it you'll be OK with stepping in the ring with me to spare then!"... hehehe.
5. The students in my last period class were loving the fact that I was being followed by KBS, my "Stalker Club" as I jokingly called them... hehehe. KBS filmed me teaching, interacting with the students and then they interviewed some of my students.
6. ... then they filmed me buying food, my food, eating the food.... that was a bit uncomfortable. On lookers at Galleria stopped and starred as I walked with a camera man and his camera literally just inches of my face... "Don't they have zoom on cameras?" I joked.
7. Fridays are long days and I usually come home, cuddle up on the couch with Mi Nam for a good hour, and then head off to boxing. Today I had no nap. Instead, the film crew followed me up to my house and then off we went to boxing. I hadn't washed my make-up off from work cause well, with a camera crew by my side, there was no way I was going to be caught on film with no make-up. My skin is good but my make-up is a kind of security blanket for me. Only Q sees me with absolutely no make-up.
8. Training was totally out of whack today on account that we wanted to make a good show for the camera. And so, on that note, Junior Mint wrapped my hands, was extra strict with me, drilled me on abs with the medicine ball, and then made me spar one round with one of the male amateur boxers. I took extra shots to the head and leg from Junior Mint on pad work and then we impressed them by showing them how strong my abs are... meaning, I laid down on my back and then Junior Mint stepped up on my abs. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other while I flexed my abs for as long as I could... definitely a hard exercise I don't necessarily recommend!!!
9. After KBS did their filming, interviewing of some of my team mates, and went over the schedule for tomorrow, they left. I stuck around to do more training and then I too left about an hour later. I was exhausted. Mind ya, I think thinking about tomorrow helped to exhaust me. Tomorrow is going to be a long day. They're planning to start filming around 9am till who knows when. They warned me that they want to film me cooking (me cooking?!!!), exercising outside, and sparring practice.
10. Finally had some me time but in anticipation of a busy weekend with KBS following me around, I had to get cracking with preparing the exam and final marks. Q swung by my house later on and so that was nice. Although it meant that I slaved away on the computer while he watched TV with Mi Nam in the other room, it felt nice to know that he was here. Working late at night and alone reminds me of my slave-like university days.... not exactly fun.
QUESTION OF THE DAY...
Does it sound like fun?
QUOTE OF THE DAY...
The test of courage comes when we are in the minority. The test of tolerance comes when we are in the majority.
-- Ralph W. Sockman
As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).
After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.
Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.
