1. Yesterday I was quite excited to tell my students that this was our official last class. Next week it’ll be review week but it’ll be a short class and they’ll be no homework, just studying. Today, however, I felt kind of sad to tell my classes the same news. I can honestly say, I’ll really miss my Tuesday students.
2. Today some of my students stuck around after class to walk and talk with me around campus, one of which was Kim Me. Kim Me and I always chat after class. Today it was nice to have a pose escort me to my office. Korean students are SO cute!!!
3. Temperatures continue to rise in Korea despite the rain we got yesterday and so I am eagerly anticipating the monsoon sticking around for a month or so. A month of rain sure beats a month of roaring temperatures and a sun beating hot rays down on us!!!
4. At boxing tonight I got quite the unexpected reaction from Junior Mint when Q mentioned to him that I was planning a summer get-away to Canada. “What?!!” he yelled out. He told me that KBS Sports and MBC keep on calling him and that if I want to keep my sponsors happy, I should reconsider going to Canada for the summer. So, I told him, “Fight no, Canada go. Fight yes, Canada no”. I know my main sponsor has been getting a bit antsy and I know waiting till January for another fight will not only kill their interest in me but also depress the heck out of me. Games are hard but I’m beginning to get antsy myself. I love the whole anticipation of it, despite the solid week of recovery it requires.
5. I asked Q tonight, “How many fights on average do my team mates Black Skinny and Panty Boy Jr. have?” He answered, “2-3”. That sounds about right considering it takes about 2-3 months to prepare for a fight once a fight is scheduled. I’m due for my next fight… I can feel it.
6. For the most part, no one at my boxing club holds grudges or judgements over each other. We’re all here for the love of the sport and regardless as to how small or extreme each person’s passion for the sport is, it’s safe to say that at our club we have created quite a close knit club. Having said that, it caught me off guard tonight when one of my team mates told me to “be careful”, claiming that a particular amateur female boxer has her eyes “set on me”, so to speak. Some one else told me the other day that this same girl is a lesbian but I don’t see what the big deal is. I guess it’s good news for me in that it means she’ll never check out Q when he’s standing half naked for weigh-in… hehehe.
7. So, “why do you think she’s a lesbian?” I asked.
“She’s got short hair” … so do I.
“She wears baggy clothes at training”… I didn’t realize tight clothing was a requirement.
“She doesn’t wear make-up”… neither do most Korean girls her age.
“She only hangs out with girls”… I could only wish to have close girl friends like her.
“She hangs around the gym for hours”… so do I.
8. “But she has pictures of girls on her textbooks”... ya, ok and they’re called pop singers. If they think her pictures of the Wonder Girls is bad, I guess I shouldn’t tell them about the half-naked pictures I have of girls on my fridge. Let’s see, I have Jen Hendershott, Kelly Ryan, and Maggie Diubaldo sporting some mean bikinis and mean muscle. They’re my favorite female fitness models/body builders and I posted their pictures on my fridge to motivate, inspire, and remind me why all this dieting and training is worth it.
9. “She is always trying to touch you Amy”… it’s called shoulder massages and if she’s willing to massage my shoulders after a gruelling 2 hour train than she definitely rocks in my books! According to my buddy, I’m just as likely to be a lesbian as this cute pudgy high school student who has been nothing but sweet to me. So what if she dresses in baggy clothes and has short hair. I could only wish to be as confident as her to walk around with no make-up; all the more power to her. I must say though, her shoulder massages are really good and much appreciated. Every time I see her at boxing, she always gives me a message and a thumbs up. She’s my little Korean cheerleader… hehehe. Everyone needs someone like her.
10. Spent the rest of the night studying Korean. I must have listened to the same Korean study CD tracks at least a million times.
QUESTION OF THE DAY...
What does it really matter if she is a lesbian or not?
QUOTE OF THE DAY...
People with courage and character always seem sinister to the rest.
-- Hermann Hesse
As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).
After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.
Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.
