As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Highlights of my Day... Wednesday, December 10

1. Exams continued on today into day three for me with the marking. Surprisingly enough, it’s not getting boring for me. Although many students have used similar story lines, they’ve all been very cool to watch.

2. Living in Korea for four years has taught me an incredible amount of patience. I’ve worked in a school were only one co-worker spoke English, I’ve dated dudes here who’s English was in the minus range and so things that once would bother me and eat me up inside now simply roll off my back… a lesson that one of my coworkers apparently hasn’t quite learned unfortunately. I say that because today when we headed out to the car, there was a car blocking our way out of the back alley. My co-worker flipped. No offense to him but I really didn’t think it was a big deal. “Let’s call the car’s owner” I suggested, and seeing as I was the only one there that spoke Korean, I made the call. Almost all Koreans display their phone number on their dash board for reasons like today. A couple of minutes later a lady came out and moved the car. Easy enough, or so I thought… no such luck. My co-worker was fuming and using quite the colourful words to express himself. “Wow” was all I could say.

3. I refuse to let stupid things like a parked car knock years off my life, cause that’s what it’ll do. Stress kills. It boils your blood pressure, gives you wrinkles on your forehead, puts added stress on your heart, and a wrinkly frowning person is never a pretty sight.

4. Bless my students who bombarded me with gifts but oh gosh… they’re killing me with all these sugary treats and cream-filled pastries that they’re bringing me as thank you gifts for a fun semester!!! Some of them opted for more “Amy-appropriate” goodies by offering me fat free milk and Gatorade… hehehe.

5. Since Panty Boy Jr. quit our boxing team to get a “real job”, as his mother said, things just haven’t been the same. Handsome Boy is busy looking after his pregnant new wife, Q’s been busy with work, Sung Min is consumed with his career, and Mr. Nice Guy left with Panty Boy Jr. So now it’s down to Black Skinny, me and Milk Dud. Junior Mint is now both our coach and team mate, having stepped back into the ring.

6. I was talking to Milk Dud the other day about this, how I miss the guys and all their friends they use to bring into the club to watch us train. Well, tonight it felt like old times when an unexpected guest, Motor Cross, dropped by and both Q and Handsome Boy were present. Motor Cross went to the military not so long ago but because he’s a professional athlete (hence the name… he’s a professional motor cross racer), he’s been situated locally so that he can still train and race.

7. Weighed-in before training:
Day 1: 55.15kgs = 121.33lbs

Day 2: 54.62kgs = 120.16lbs
Day 3 (today): 54.28kgs = 119.42lbs

Weight lost so far: 0.87kgs = 1.91lbs

Cutting out the starchy carbs from my meals 3-5 have really had an effect on me, both physically and mentally. Mad cravings kicked in today. I craved bread like a pregnant woman, like a fat kid craves a cookie… like Koreans crave rice…. Hehehe. Seriously though, it was rough. I knew I had altered my diet too drastically when skipping for 30 minutes made me dizzy. Took it relatively easy for the rest of training, careful not to push myself too much.

8. Junior Mint was training tonight when I arrived at boxing and so that was awesome to watch… and also very distracting cause I continually stopped training to watch him. Everyone stopped actually. He went animal-style on pad work and then called Q into the ring to spar with him.

9. Q is an awesome fighter. He’s a relatively small guy but he really packs a mean punch. Sometimes I really envy him. I wish I could “paint” like him. “Painting” is when you try to trick your opponent into thinking you’re going to throw a punch. It’s like flinching in a way. The point of it is to get your opponent to react as if you’d be throwing a punch and then you go in for a counter punch to really get them.

“Amy, are you nervous for Q?” Motor Cross questioned.
“Why?” I asked.
“… because he’s sparring with coach”
“Maybe I’m nervous for coach.”

10. Must admit I’m pretty ignorant and lazy when it comes to cooking. I’m perfectly happy chomping on chunks of bland boiled chicken, feasting on hard boiled and fried eggs, and I prefer my veggies raw. I don’t add salt to anything, nor do I really use any kind of seasoning or sauces. The only extras I use is ketchup… hehehe. Tonight I added kimchi to my list of extras… had a craving for something spicy.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
What gets to you?

I sparred tonight as I told you I was going to and it’s funny I read in this post about your Q “painting” as you said which is exactly what Shaun the girl I box does.I never heard that term before. I sparred six rounds tonight with her and she is excellent at letting me think she is open for a punch but when I step towards her she gets me with a combination to the head and body or vice-versa. I make the mistake of getting mad, not with her but with myself for letting her get to me like that. I think I figured her out that she gets me wobbled a bit then picks and chooses her punches you know? I have to counter a way to deal with her speed.
I love the extra pictures of you also in this post. You look really in top shape Amy really. Keep it up!

Sorry if it seems like I'm picking on you lately, but seriously...

"Painting"?

C'mon.

The term is feinting. Koreans can't say the letter "f".

That's how i feel about LIFE. Whats the point in stressing over the little things? Except I dont keep calm to look good when im older, but because its your quality of life. To be happier more often. When im late to school, why hurry? Being 10minutes late as opposed to 15minutes doesnt make a difference.

Yo Beth,
Good stuff. Keep up with the hard training and all that sparring!!! Six rounds... impressive! I love how you constantly try to disect Shaun's style and whatnot, shows that you really want to improve your game.
Thanks... I try really hard to keep shape. And, actually, I really want to say thank you to you not for your compliments but for your encouragement. Moreover, I really do like reading about your sparring and just as I hope I am encouraging to you, you are encouraging to me. Thank you ;)

Hello Bad Lieutenant,
Oops... hehehe. No, I don't think you're picking on me. Thanks for the correction but now that I know it's feinting not painting, I think I'll stick to painting... hehehe. Makes me laugh now.

Hey B-Man,
Exactly! Don't sweat the small stuff, I say.
