As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Highlights of my Day... Friday, May 1

1. Waking up today felt like I hadn’t slept at all. My biorhythm is so out of whack what with all that marking I did and then last night’s situation. But it was a new day and so I woke up with hopes of only focusing on today. The sun was shinning and I had no plans for today except for studying Korean, hitting the gym and meeting up with Buff Boy the Original for dinner and a movie.

2. All hopes came crashing down however upon arriving at the boxing club. Junior Mint was out for the afternoon and so Motor Cross and Panty Boy Jr. were watching the club. “Where’s Q?” asked Motor Cross, not exactly the question nor the name I wanted to hear at that moment but whatever, I knew full well that I’d have to deal with it sooner or later. I guess better sooner than later, right?! “I don’t know” was all I responded with.

3. Ended up training with Gangster Oppa. He could sense something was up and I think his hard punch to my shoulder was his attempt at snapping me out of it, literally.

4. A couple of weeks ago Buff Boy the Original took a TOEIC exam and totally creamed it, proving to himself that he’s definitely smarter than he had given himself credit for before. I always knew he was smarter than he thought. If I remember correctly, he scored a 965 out of 990!!! I told him I wanted to take him out for dinner and a movie to celebrate, hence why we meet up tonight.

5. Dinner turned into coffee and a four hour chat made us ignore the movie.

6. You know when you have those defining moments with friends, or people in general, when you know nothing will ever be the same from that very moment for whatever reason, well, tonight I had one of those moments with Buff Boy the Original when I told him something I’ve been holding off since last summer to tell him, a secret I have but only told two other people. He sat there and listened as I squirmed in my seat and desperately looked for the right words to tell him. I think there’s only been two other moments like this that Buff Boy the Original and I have shared, where I’ve felt so exposed and so vulnerable. “No secrets” I told him. “Now I have no secrets between us”. I’ve known him for about three years now and so although I know airing my laundry to him is okay, I couldn’t help but worry about whether or not he’d judge me or think differently of me. Some people in life are just too precious to risk losing by holding back and having secrets, he’s one of those people to me.

7. Junior Mint ended up hounding me… texting me repeatedly and then calling me. Earlier on today I had written on the club’s calender board that I had a game on the 29th, something that I had mentioned numerous times to Junior Mint. I guess he thought I wasn’t being serious and so when he returned to the club to see the notice, he gave me quite the serious phone call. He asked me what promoter I was working with but honestly, although I am very much interested in getting a promoter, it was KBC Kim who gave me the fight. There was no promoter, no middle man, involved here. I still don’t know the details of the fight but I definitely know that Junior Mint’s not impressed with me right now… great. “I’m your manager!” he blurted out. “What time are you going to train tomorrow?” he then asked and with that I knew that I’d be getting quite the lecture tomorrow.

8. Upon arriving back home, I scooped up Mi Nam and laid down on the couch with him. “Things aren't so bad now are they baby?” I asked him. Of course me expecting him to answer me meant I had to settle for perked ears and a lick on my face, nice. Today had originally started off on a questionable rocky but optimistic start and ended with a tummy ache from laughing, not bad… not bad at all.

9. I was just about to call it a day when all of a sudden I got a strange text message on my phone. The text message came at exactly 12:40am and in English read “Please would you do me a favor? Can you speak Korean?” No sooner did I respond with a yes but another message came. The first word that I read was “emergency” and with that my heart skipped a beat. The message, and numerous ones that followed, were being sent by my student Ladybug’s friend and sounded desperate.

10. I wrote down all the texts in hopes of being able to better translate them but she had spelt many words wrong, making it so hard for me to fully understand. I ended up calling Tang to help me translate. Apparently what had happened was Ladybug went out with two guys tonight, one of which was that male student from my Thursday class I had mentioned about in yesterday’s posting. Anyways, so she went out with these two guys but now was missing. I have a list of all my students’ contact information and so I texted her that male student’s cell phone number. I never heard back from Ladybug’s friend and so I had a hard time trying to fall asleep. My nerves were shot.

QUOTE OF THE DAY...
What matters is not the idea a man holds, but the depth at which he holds it.
