As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Highlights of my Day... Sunday, September 13

1. With Snickers off at sparring practice with Panty Boy Jr., I thought I’d hook up with Kitty Cat for a much needed caffeine fix and chat time. Texted her “don’t make fun of my puffy eyes and 80 rocker look” before I met up with her. It had been a strange and deranged night last night and apparently that had carried into the morning today, unfortunately that meant I was sporting swollen eyes.

2. Rocked a pair of cuffed jeans, a white tank top, and a tuxedo-style vest just cause I knew it won’t be long until summer leaves us yet again. Am looking forward to fall though, with it’s chunky woolen, over-sized sweaters and butt-hugging jeans.
3. Snickers fight is less than a week away and so it was reassuring to hear that he royally kicked butt at sparring practice today. He caught up with Kitty Cat and I downtown and showed no usual signs of sparring… no red marks on the face, no signs of bruising to come, and no signs of a bloody nose. He was all smiles and it was evident that his sparring practice had helped to boost his confidence for this upcoming game.

4. To be honest, I am sure he’ll win but am so scared he’ll lose. I’m scared he’ll lose not because of the blow it’ll take to his confidence but because of the pressure his father and coach have placed on him. They’ve left very little room for error with regards to his boxing but I think it’s so unfair and unrealistic because sometimes I get the strong impression that I’m the only one who’s really trying to look out for him. I’ve mentioned this before and don’t really want to get into it again here but whether it’s me pushing his butt out for early morning running, monitoring his weight and what he eats, to making sure he’s got training gear clean and ready for exercising, I feel like I’m taking on so many roles that should be really filled by those who expect him to win and bask in the glory of it but don’t appear to do much to help lift him up to that point.

5. With the whole evening free, Snickers and I had one of our little date nights and so we headed off to the movies.

6. We had about an hour and a half to spare before the movie started and so we thought we play a couple of games at the neighbouring Game Plex. A quick peak into the Game Plex almost got us kicked out after Snickers insisted on winning a mini Snickers bar for me from the drop candy machine. After we put in 1,500won (=$1.40 CDN), which could have clearly bought us a full bag of Snickers mini bars, the mini bar still refused to drop and so Snickers punched the machine. Of course he didn’t give it a full force punch but the machine made quite the loud sound and the young high school student working behind the counter looked nervous at the thought of having to tell Snickers to watch himself. I had a good laugh, stopped Snickers and then reassured the young high school kid that he wouldn’t have to be involved.

7. Snickers’ punch did in fact score me that mini Snickers bar though… hahaha.

8. Despite Snickers’ game dieting and having to make weigh-in this Friday, he thought it okay to eat a pint of Baskin Robins ice cream. I’ve been pretty good with monitoring his eating and encouraging him to eat healthy, so of course I just HAD TO eat some of that ice cream, too. I couldn’t let him eat the whole thing on his own… hahaha.

See that bubble looking thing at the end of the game machine isle, well, that's the candy drop machine that Snickers bullied... hahaha.
9. They say kids say the darnest things well I take it they haven’t heard Snickers’ English.

Some of Snickers’ favourite things to say in English and what they mean:

“I am sausage.”
Basically it’s him apologizing and joking at the same time, in which my usual answer is “Yes, but you’re my sausage.” I should note here too that the “e” in “sausage” comes out sounding more like “sausageee”… hahaha.

“You are so butterfly.”
A friend once did a spin on the whole “You’re the ugly duckling that turned into a swan” but calling me a butterfly and insisting that when we first met I was a caterpillar, waiting my turn to come into myself. Ever since then I’ve had a fascination with butterflies and so Snickers says “You are so butterfly” instead of saying “You are so beautiful” because anyone can disguise themselves to be beautiful but a butterfly is always a butterfly, it’s more than beautiful, it’s one of nature’s
miracles and wonders.

“I love you so very much, much, much.”
I take it he just wants to emphasize how much he loves me by adding the extra “much, much”.

“I believe I can butterfly.”
While the saying actually goes “I believe I can fly” Snickers says this instead but it pretty much has the same meaning.

“You’re welcome… to Korea.”
He seems to think this is hilarious to say and so it’s become his new thing to say.

10. The movie theater was relatively empty except for the group of foreigners who sat right behind Snickers and me. Snickers was overly curious about what they were saying and so he asked me to translate their chatting. I thought it was funny to make a joke out of the situation and tell him that they were gossiping about the whole “Korean size” issue… hahaha.

QUESTION OF THE DAY...
What do you say that's so funny?

QUOTE OF THE DAY...
English is a funny language; that explains why we park our car on the driveway and drive our car on the parkway.
