As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Highlights of my Day... Thursday, October 15

1. Discovered that if I push my up on the under part of my right ear it greatly muffles my hearing in that ear. Oh the joys of being an athlete. The injuries I sport seem to be endless. My left ear is still somewhat messed up from a high school field hockey accident that I never did get the required medical attention for. Consequently, my hearing is a bit off and so I always have to look both ways before crossing the road because if a car is coming from my left side I often think it’s coming from my right. My right foot still aches in the morning but Snickers always offers to massage it. Today my chest hurt from pushing it too hard on weight training, but I opted out on the offered massage for that one… hahaha.

2. Am seriously contemplating my options for next year with regards to work. Do I even want to work at all, that is the question. I love my job at Dankook but dealing with all the issues outside of the classroom, like English camps that pay insulting rates and coworkers who get away with dodging them, or coworkers who don’t understand the “co” in “coworker”. I’d love to just break away from it all and do something besides teaching English. I mean, teaching English to non-native speakers is so much fun but I’m anticipating this being my last year in Korea and so I’d love to do something totally different. I would really love just to focus on my boxing but considering Snickers and I are planning to get married, and then we’ll be moving to Canada together, I feel like I’m somewhat responsible for financially supporting the two of us.

3. Work was good. I gave my midterm exam review lecture and watched as students scrambled to scribble down any pointers they thought I was or may have given. Of course there’s always those that don’t care but, for the most part, I think students do care.

4. My Thursday classes didn’t do too well on their writing assignment, actually to tell you the truth, many of them bombed it, but boy did they ever put a lot of effort into bombing it. They really tried hard.

5. Got a urgent text message from Junior Mint when I was on route home, telling me to hurry home as soon as possible and turn on MBC.

6. Turned on the tube and low and behold a female boxing bout was in progress. And to think, I nearly killed myself running home in stiletto heels. I thought it was either Snickers or I on TV… hahaha. Ended up watching the fight. It was a Japanese girl against a Korean girl, who obviously stood no chance.

7. The next fight was between a Korean girl and a Canadian girl who had flown in for the fight. As soon as I saw the Canadian flag flash across the screen I knew very well that the IFBA President, whom I met at my last match, would be in attendance. I cringed with regret, regret that I hadn’t followed through with a simple email after I had originally met her. The IFBA President travels to Korea with every foreign female boxer who comes here to fight. She doesn’t speak Korea and isn’t too familiar with Korea. When I met her I had mentioned that I’d love to help her out the next time she came to Korea, maybe set things for her next visit. One big problem though, I never even so much dropped her a line to keep in contact. Needless to say I definitely regret that now and writing that email is on the top of my priority list!!!

8. I won’t name names or even suggest who asked me this, but today I got asked by a Korean if black people really lived in Canada. This all came about as a result of the fact that Lisa Brown (today’s Canadian boxer) was black. “Where did you think black people live, only in Africa?” I asked.

9. The amateur boxers who will be fighting next week continue their intense training and so today I got to watch some sparring. I miss sparring so much!!! Oh, what I wouldn’t do to schedule another fight at this point. I miss it but know my turn will come again, not soon enough for me though, dang.

10. Well Snickers did it. He chopped my finger nails off, leaving me with stumpy child-like nails. Ahhh…. I feel a tear.
