I haven’t really been a very good companion for Pyen Chi lately because I’ve been sleeping a lot. Training is leaving me exhausted so I sleep an excessive amount. Pyen Chi usually will curl up with me when I sleep but once the sun is up she’s all about pawing my face and shoulder in attempts to get me to get up and play with her.
She tends to get into trouble when left home alone – chewing on the kitchen table legs, pulling paper out from the garbage and playing with any kind of fruit that’s left on the table. She’s inventive, I’ll give her that! She’s learned that if she gently puts an egg in her mouth and drops it, it’ll break and she can then eat it. She’s figured out how to peel a banana. It’s a messy peel but none the less she’ll peel a banana, eat the middle and leave the peel on the floor. She’s also learned that if she bites hard enough on a water bottle the water will come out.
In her learning inventive ways to score food or get into trouble, I’ve learned that if I want to make sure things in the house will remain safely in place when she’s left alone I have to exhaust her before I go out. Snickers does this by taking her outside to play wrestle and run. I tried a different approach today. I got her to tire herself out and I did this by flipping a bowl upside down on the floor and putting a piece of beef jerky under it. Beef jerky is smelly enough that she could smell it but with the bowl over top of it it meant she had to work for it, and boy did she work… hahaha. She was running around the kitchen kicking that bowl as if she were playing floor hockey. It was quite amusing to watch but after a good 20 minutes she scored the treat and then was lights out on the floor, exhausted. I slipped quietly out of the house for a good run and when I returned she was still in la-la land.
She really needs a companion though, I’m convinced of it. Snickers and I play with her a lot but she's like a two year old in that she's constantly needing attention or something to distract her. As for what breed her companion should be… hmmm… I’m stuck on that one. I was thinking of a smaller breed but nothing too small because I’d be afraid of her rolling over and crushing her new friend. I know a guy who has a bull terrier pup but as much as I love it’s mother she reminds me too much of Mi Nam so I don’t think I’d be ready for such a resemblance 24/7 around me. I’m thinking I need a breed totally disconnected from that of Mi Nam’s breed though I must say I do have a soft spot for French Bulldogs, well bulldogs in general actually.
For the most part the dogs at the Asan shelter were overly furry and I really don’t want another four-legged furry friend. Pyen Chi’s fur is high maintenance so I’d like a short haired friend. I’d like a short-haired unique breed. I love Doberman Pinschers but I think having another large dog would be too much, perhaps a Miniature Doberman Pinscher would best suit us. The Asan Shelter has one available but one of it’s back legs is disabled, something that would definitely be an issue if it lived with Pyen Chi.
As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).
After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.
Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

I don't know all that much about different breeds. However, I recommend looking at other shelters around Korea (if you don't mind the travel). If nothing else, you'll get more options. It's how I found my cat. Here's a list of adoptable pets (some are in foster care and some are in the shelter) http://www.animalrescuekorea.org/adoptable-dogs
Of course there are more in the shelters as well (대전, 대구, etc.) Good luck and I hope you find her a friend soon. :) BTW, there is a bulldog that just got put up for adoption (in 경산). Stay strong through your training. ^^
Hi Jacky,
Yes, I've seen that website but thank you. I saw the bulldog -- there's two if I recall -- but I just don't have the heart to take on another one. Still very heartbroken over Mi Nam and am sure I wouldn't be able to handle people mistaking it for him. Bulldogs are awesome though so I sure hope someone adopts those cool dudes;)
For the most part, the dogs tend to be mix breeds and I'd much prefer a unique breed, like that beautiful greyhound at Jeju. I have a strange preference, I know, but I'm curious about some select breeds of dogs and I don't want to just adopt one for the sake of adopting a companion for Pyen Chi. I do want to find a four-legged friend that fits our family and is adored by all. I don't know if I'd be interested in such a normal dog or a mix. Maybe that's terrible for me to say but it is quite the committment to take on a dog and I really want to be 100% into it.
I can understand. You definitely have to make sure the dog will fit in with your family and don't want to be too reminded of Mi Nam. That greyhound does look amazing! Jeju is far, but not THAT far away. Of your 3 in the newest post, I really like #3, Jacob. I'm not a fan of tiny dogs (oversized rats imo, lol). Best of luck. ^.^
Hi Jacky,
Losing Mi Nam is still a very fresh wound so ya, I think it'd be much too hard to have a similar dog. Jeju isn't so far, that's true, but she is a big dog and we're leaning towards getting a male. None the less, she's gorgeous and I'm sure she'd be quite the play buddy for Pyen Chi. As for Jacob, ya, he's my choice too, that is if I had to pick from those available. He looks like a minature Pyen Chi so I'm sure he'd be mistaken for being her baby... hahaha. Hope it doesn't give him a complex;)
I think getting a boy is a smart idea. "Couples" usually get along better when they meet as adults. Please get a neutered dog, though (or fix him right away)!
