As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Stop Sabotaging Yourself... Monday, May 21

This is a condensed list and explaination of the most common things people do that sabotage their clean eating and journey towards becoming healthier.

1. You’re not getting in enough fluids.
Water is vital to flushing out toxins and about 60% of your body is water. Often people mistake dehydration for hunger so if you think you’re hungry, drink a glass of water first.

2. You’re not eating often enough.
Aim to eat smaller meals on a more frequent bases – eating every 2.5-3 hours, 5-6 times a day. By eating smaller meals more often you’ll never feel full but you’ll never feel hungry. Skipping meals pushes the body into starvation mode. It then stores the food you consume to anticipate missing yet another meal. The end result, you gain weight and kill your metabolism.

3. You’re not sleeping enough.
It is suggested that not only are 7-9hrs of sleep required to rejuvenate the mind, body and soul but it is also required for the balance of two hormones – leptin and ghrelin – that help regulate your appetite control and feeling of hunger.

4. You’re not writing it down.
Until you find your rhythm with eating it is suggested that you write down what you eat. If you know you’re accountable for it than you’re less likely to emotionally eat and will be more conscious about what you put in your mouth.

5. You don’t have support.
Losing weight takes commitment and dedication and what better way to help push yourself than to share your goals with friends and family who will not only support and help you but also might join in on your training and clean eating.

6. You don’t have a plan.
Whether it’s doing bulk cooking, mapping out your weekly meals, planning a cheat snack, or planning your meals and training, don’t risk being unprepared.

7. You’re not reading food labels properly.
One of the biggest trends I see these days in Korean grocery stores are the Dr.You foods. Sorry, but slapping on Dr.You and claiming that chocolate covered granola bars are healthy doesn’t mean it’s correct. They use this to lure the buyer in – hook, line and sinker.

8. You’re a Yo-Yo dieter.
Instead of jumping on yet another fad diet band wagon, research what exactly it is when I refer to clean eating. Clean eating isn’t a diet, it’s a life style. It’s a way of life that incorporates realistic healthy eating of all the food groups.

9. You’re not active enough.
What you eat is super important but exercise is needed if you want to be a "skinny-fat girl". Cardio will trim you down and weight training will tone you up but you have to sweat! Exercising is all about raising your heart rate… breaking a sweat... so if you're not sweating than rethink what it is you're doing.

10. You’re nixing the wrong foods.
One of the most commons problems I notice is that people tend to cut out starchy carbs. Trust me, you don’t want to do that. They are your main source of energy and provide the ideal fuel (glucose) for your body to function optimally. Cutting out fat is another one. Fat isn’t bad. There is good fat. You need mono unsaturated essential fatty acids, like nuts, seed, fish oil, and fish.
