As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Movie Date Night with our Hulkies... Thursday, July 10

We went into the evening having had quite a successful day at Hulk's -- 7 out of 7 members who had their monthly weigh-in today were successful.  Most greeted the success with smiles and high fives while one jumped up and down, sported a smile from ear to ear, and another bragged to all his friends training about his results.

We got all our members through their training, pushed them extra hard with my crossfit circuit class, and then both Snickers and I showered and got ready for our movie night with our Hulkies.  We then loaded up the cars with our members and headed to the theater, our massive group.

I was overly excited about tonight, just thinking about it before hand.  I haven't been to the Yawoori movie theater in over a year and the one theater we do go to once in a blue moon, CGV, is rather ghetto and always smells like a mixture of stale popcorn and unwashed dirty feet.  It feels like a long time since we've had a Hulk social but actually it was just last month we had our first birthday party and attended two tournaments.  Snickers and I were quite pleased with tonight's social and it got us thinking about planning the next one.  Tonight's movie tickets were curticy of a generous donation from a particular someone from Shinsaegee Department Store and another sponsor generously picked up the tab for popcorn and pop for everyone.  The movie event was a huge success but with it being a movie, there's little to no chance for members to really socialize and get to know each other beyond chatting in what little time we had beforehand.

We've been thinking about planning a weekend camping trip, like we did last year, but it's so hard to get members to commit to an overnight event, especially considering how precious the weekend is to most.  The best idea for social events tends to be events/activities held around town that only run 1-3 hours in length.  This way members can easily leave if they have to (or want to) and it's not necessarily a big committment.  Then there's always the notion that if certain members don't know other members going, they may be uncomfortable and want that easy out -- I totally can understand that because boy have I been in that situation before!

After the movie event tonight, I sat down and brainstormed some ideas for future events, some events that are as time conscious as they are effortless and not money-consuming.  Larger groups are hard to plan for
and we've got quite a tight group among our regular members so planning for smaller groups interests me more.

Some of my future event ideas:
  • Karaoke Room
  • Games Night
  • Pool Tournament
  • Bowling
  • Ping Pong Tournament
  • Host a Club Baseball Game
  • Rooftop BBQ
  • Scavenger Hunt
  • Riverside Picnic Party
  • In-Club Potluck Dinner
  • Ice Cream Outing
  • Pizza Party
  • Chicken Party
  • Bonfire
  • Midnight Mountain Hike
