As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Sparring Day... Friday, July 4

I know it's Friday and I know it's July 4th, Independence Day, and this past week we had Canada Day on the 1st, but hey, I could seriously careless what the heck was going on elsewhere in Cheonan, or Korea for that matter tonight.  With it being Sparring Day tonight here at Hulk's, our boxing club was buzzing with such contagious energy and the excitement and hype of it extended long after the two hours of sparring had finished.

Tonight was the third Sparring Day we've hosted and with every week that passes we seem to get more and more females participating.  Ok, so we have many male Hulkies too but you know I'm all about the fierce females -- the fierce Femizons!!!  We had four fierce females step into the ring today, two of which stepped in for their first time ever, one of which is a member who only this past week joined our club.

I was so impressed.

Fridays are by far my favourite day at Hulk's!!!!

My favourite sparring match out of all the members who sparred was none other than Lady Da vs Snickers.  This particular Hulkie is just too adorable, seriously adorable.  So far at her time training at Hulk's she's gotten stuck in our bathroom (and consequently won the hearts of all present upon the realization of this, strange but true), I "rescued" her the other day when she got stuck upside down on our back extension, and the other day in my crossfit class she pushed through a very grueling exercise when another member accidentally switched weights, making her use a heavier one.  Almost on a daily bases she wins extra cute points most randomly and she trains so hard.  I'm convinced that because of her manner she is by far our cutest member e-v-e-r!!!

Tonight Lady Da stepped into the ring to spar against Snickers and, like the others before and after her, she went two rounds.  She was running out of steam by the end of the first round but a few comments from her boyfriend and I ringside were all it took for her to pick up the pace in the second round.  It was like a fire was lit within her and she totally charged at Snickers.  I'm not too sure on what exactly happened with her shoe, whether her laces had come undone or not, but suddenly off went her shoe, flying out of the ring and hitting one of us spectators.  It was hilarious but while we all giggled over the situation she kept on going.  She didn't miss a beat and, if anything, got stronger because of our reaction.

Sparring is such an accident exercise and tool for improving your boxing but I think our members partake in it more for the fun of it and social aspect.  At 6pm tonight the club was rather quite but then, right before 7pm, it was suddenly packed with members all eager to get their names on the sparring line up list.

I must admit that I'm somewhat envious of our members who spar.  Boxing is still very fun to them, it's all so innocent to them.  And though I know many of them are nervous stepping into the ring to spar, even those who have sparred in previous weeks, I miss the butterflies and shot nerves that come with being new to sparring.  At my former club, UP, I didn't get much chances to spar and they were usually reserved for when I was only training for a specific fight, but now my chances are all that more slim now that I'm at Hulk's.  I'm eager to step into the ring and go against Snickers; I know full well that I'll have butterflies and shot nerves going against him but I want that.  I'm up for the challenge and soon enough I too will be adding my name on the Sparring Day line up list.  I'm very excited about that.  The plan is to kick off our Sparring Day with a sparring session between Snickers and I -- give our members a real intense show to watch.
