As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Just Wasn't in the Game... Friday, October 9

With me living practically a stone throw away from the boxing club, a 6.5min run from door to door to be exact, you'd think it'd be incredibly ridiculous for me to be late.
Today I was late.

Today I woke up basically on the minute I should have been slipping into my head gear and popping my mouth guard into my mouth.

Today I was late for sparring.

My sleeping patterns have been off since my move downtown but in all fairness it's only been my second sleep at my new pad.  I went from sleeping with a sun roof above my head to a wall window beside my bed so I wake up several times in the night dazed and confused to as why I can hear the wind on the one side.

So I woke up, realized what time it was, popped out of my bed and in less than five minutes I had thrown on some training clothes and shoes, brushed my teeth and then was running down the street.  When I got to the club I had to take a double look to make sure I had actually put on my clothes right let alone make sure I had even put on clothes.  Note here only once did I leave the house without putting a top on.  From then on I always keep some spare training clothes in my bag.

It was one thing to be late but to be late on a sparring day, not cool.  Not only did I feel I looked disrespectful to my sparring partner who I'd like to note I am changing her nickname from Queen Spar to Queen of the Overhead Two, but I also was distracted by my mistake.  I couldn't shake it.

Like many boxers, I have a routine I like to go through but it's not just for before a fight on fight day but also for my sparring on sparring days.  Boxing is as much as a physical sport as it is a mental one and the opponent is not only the one who stands in the ring with you but the one inside your head -- you.  Every Friday I have sparring here in Canada and so every Friday morning I have a specific routine I go through to mentally get my head in the game and prepared for the sparring match.  I like to wake up extra early, skip the morning coffee but have my morning whole wheat wrap.  I go over notes I've made during the week on pointers Coach Brown has said to me and then I put on a "game song" and head off to the club.  Each week it's a new song but it's something that has a hard beat and gets me pumped for sparring.  I then arrive at the club, relax by zoning out and watching those early morning Boxfit participants train.  I then put my handwraps and boots on, stretch a lot and then I start skipping once my sparring partner arrives.  Skipping is then followed by stepping into the ring for 12 rounds.
Today I had no mental control over my sparring as thoughts of my tardiness and all other thoughts attached to it distracted my thinking and blocked my game which only made me more frustrated with already rushing to the club frustrated.

Sooooo frustrating.

I'm less than two months till my fight so every sparring session and every day of training has a heightened importance on it.

Waking up late resulted in showing up late for sparring.
Showing up late for sparring resulted in being mentally distracted.
Being mentally distracted meant being increasingly frustrated.
Increasingly frustrated caused me to not be up to par with where I could have, should have and would have been for my sparring.

And on that note I was in a royal funk for the rest of the entire day!!!
