As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Doogie Howser is My Doctor... Thursday, March 3

I met my new family doctor today.  I had totally mistaken him as being the doctor office assistant so I handed him my clipboard of papers and the pen, then asked him when he knew the doctor would be seeing me.  As soon as he introduced himself I felt myself hoping he's gay.  My doctor's office is at Church and Wellseley, a very well-known LGB community.  I personally don't care what anyone's sexual preference is but when you're a good looking, young, 30-something male doctor, you best believe it is something that matters to me.  Say what you want, "he's a professional", "give him a break", "it's his job",... blah, blah, blah... it still doesn't change the fact that my full physical in two weeks is going to be super uncomfortable if this pretty boy of a doctor is a straight man.  I'm not attracted to him, he's neither Asian or black, but it's just weird for me that he's so young.  He's like the Doogie Howser of Toronto, seriously!!!

And if it weren't strange enough that my new family doctor looks like the neighbouring cutie at the local Starbucks, my chiropractor is also a young one.  My chiropractor is a handsome 27 year old Asian who has done Martial Arts for years on end and he's jacked.  The thing that sold me on him as a chiropractor though is the fact that he is a fighter so he is very experienced in fighting-related injuries first hand so he knows how to approach me about my injuries and understands them first hand.  He can totally relate and he is quite familiar with what my body goes through with being a fighter -- the stress, the aches, the muscle soreness, and the pain.  Moreover, he knows telling me to take a break from training is just not going to happen but he can tell me ways to modify my training or how to adjust it accordingly and I think that is awesome.

As for my Doogie Howser family doctor, there was definitely a moment of hesitation when he handed me over the Request File Transfer form for me to sign.  This particular form will be then faxed to my life-long family doctor in Ajax who literally brought me into this world, asking him to transfer all my medical records to Doogie.  I sat down with the file in my hand and pondered it before I signed it.  Was I really going to sign over the rights of my medical records and make this younging my new family doctor after being with my Ajax family doctor fo 35 years?!

Yes, I am, and I'll tell you why.  I can't disrespect him for being so young because all older doctors were once in his shoes plus being that he is so young may mean he is more up to date with practices and medicine.  A lot has changed since my Ajax family doctor was in med school and while my Ajax doctor knows his stuff, he might be too comfortable in his ways and stuck on tradition.  But Doogie, he's got a lot to prove with him being so green in the medical profession.  Basically though, it really came down to the fact that I don't get sick and I don't care to take the train all the way out to Ajax just to see a doctor.  I get injured and exhausted but never sick so seeing the doctor will basically only be for boxing-related injuries like cuts, bruises, muscle soreness, broken bones (knock on wood here), and head injuries.  For the most part, most of my boxing-related injuries can all be taken care of via extra sleep, extra vitamins and maybe a day off training.
