As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Making Magic... Wednesday, March 30

I read a quote somewhere that said "The magic happens when you get out of your comfort zone".  Every time I train at Hardknocks that is exactly what I do -- I train out of my comfort zone.  I make magic happen on a weekly bases, apparently.

Sometimes I feel like I'm coughing on humble pie when I train at Hardknocks.  I train along with two Mexican boxers who were scouted to come to Canada solely to box and regardless of how nice they are to me they're still intimidating. They're above my league but I know that's exactly why I should be here -- to become better you have to be surrounded by better.  I sparred 6 rounds today, a few with Coach Perez and then several with the American Kid.

Coach Perez knows exactly what to say to me though at the most appropriate moments, right when I need a little reassurance.  Whether it's following up after training with a little text message to my phone to say "good job girl" or giving me a little ringside comment, he always pulls me up when I feel mentally beaten up from being physical pushed at training.

I had just finished all my training and was leaning against the ring, taking off my handwraps, when Coach Perez sat beside me and asked me, "How do you feel about your training today?"  "I need to move more, stay busy with my hands and legs", I answered.  I didn't look impressed with myself, I was frustrated, but then Coach Perez said something that reassured me that I was on the right track.  He told me that everyone experiences this, the frustration, but that it takes time.  "We have to get you a fight", he added.  After training we parted ways.  On the bus ride home he texted me to tell me good job and to remind me not to overtrain.
