Yesterday my problem was I didn’t have enough money for my dream but today my problem is I have too much money… what an ironic twist of fate!!! It just goes to show you the beauty of Korea – things happen and things change like a flick of a switch.
America may be the home of the brave, Canada home of the free, but Korea… it’s the home of opportunity. I originally came to Korea to engulf myself in its culture and customs, because of opportunities it’d open for me upon returning to Canada. I stayed however. I stayed because additional doors of opportunity opened to me and now, now that I have this huge dream, it’s because of Korea’s wealth of opportunity that my dream is able to take root and grow. Some days I feel like I can do everything and anything in Korea, like leaving it would just be flat nonsense. Today was definitely one of those days!!!
I had fallen asleep on the couch, it was after 1am, when Snickers called me. He had gone out early in the evening, to talk to some people about our potential boxing club. When he called me, he was standing outside, in front of our apartment front door. I threw on some clothes and headed outside where I was then greeted by Snickers and four Korean men. One of the guys I knew, he was my second witness at my city hall wedding, but I didn’t know the other three.
Earlier on in the day, while Snickers and I sat around picking our brains about how we could possibly scoop up $30,000, I had told him about what one of my teachers at the Business start-up school had told me. “Don’t let money stop you from starting – there are always ways to come up with money” my teacher said. At the time I really didn’t read into what he was saying, after all we had a budget mapped out and the place we were looking at fell well into it.
But then someone flicked the switch – after struggling to get the first building, we found another building to fall in love with but it was well out of our price range. When this switch was flicked, money instantly became a huge problem so I then started to ponder what my teacher meant. Yesterday I wrote out many contemplated means of getting fast cash but none of them seemed to cut it.
But then someone flicked the switch again. A sponsor, who about a year ago approached Snickers about financing a business idea, popped back into the picture today to flick the switch. He’s been watching Snickers and I and is well aware of our ongoing struggle with the building committee. When he popped back into the picture today, he offered to finance our dream. “I can give you $100,000 by next month” he told Snickers.
We’re not taking the full amount, we’re still only going with the initial chunk we need, but let me tell you, having someone that believes in us as much as we believe in our dream and them being able to financially support us is just such an indescribable awesome feeling. I feel like I could fly.
Having four Korean men tell me this great piece of news was so much for me to take in and all I could really do was stand there with a dropped jaw and cry. It feels so unreal but this is really happening; we are really going to live the dream – our dream!!! I feel so undeserving of such an insanely generous gift of help and I will never be able to say thank you enough.
This IS really happening. It’s exciting, scary, thrilling, amazing – it's a rollercoaster of emotions!!!
