As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Pumping Up what I Thought was Good, Solid Beats... Thursday, August 28

Amused some of my Hulkies tonight by playing some of my favourite feel-good songs and, in some cases, breaking out some dance moves because, well, I really have no shame and it's my boxing club and I'll dance if I want to.

1.  Happy -- Pharrell
2.  If I was from Paris -- Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
3.  Push It -- Salt N' Pepper
4.  Girls Just Want to have Fun -- by Cyndi Lauper

Originally I had 8tracks blasting in the club but upon switching to a new playlist I hadn't yet heard and Madonna's "Like a Virgin" started, I got booed so I switched to looking up songs on YouTube.  Playing a few remixes of "Happy" back to back was stretching it but I think I lost my club DJ privileges when I played "Girls Just Want to have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper.  OK, so perhaps the fact that I thought it OK to sing loudly and dance along with it played a role here.  I still say my song selection was awesome.  They were fun, happy songs that you just wanted to move with.  Don't get me wrong though, I wouldn't train to them.  I like mouthy little hardcore songs like those from Lil Kim and DMX to push me through my hard training.

In other news...

This week we've been saying goodbye to a lot of our Hulkies who are returning to school and won't be able to continue their training with us because of either moving out of town or being bogged down with extra hagwon hours after school.  That's probably the worst part of summer holidays coming to an end.  They all come, say their goodbye and then promise to return once the next holiday starts up again but so often they don't.  I think I rather they just tell me this is our last hello and final goodbye.  Of course many intend on returning but then don't for whatever reason.  For the most part, our Korean members come every single day so it's hard not to train them day after day and not form friendships or get to know them beyond just training them.  Consequently, you can't help but feel somewhat forgotten about when the next holiday kicks off, days go by, and yet still no return from this member or that member.

I still hold on to the hope that my first and now former training buddy will one day walk through our club doors.  In my mind, he'll have a legite excuse, like he went off to the army or was out of country, and then we'd return to training together.  Do you know, I still have his profile page in our members profile book.  It's a book that contains only the active members, members who are currently training at Hulk's.  This particular training buddy of mine has been gone now for a solid year but a girl can wish.  Training buddies that fit my preferences aren't exactly easy to find.  My current training buddy is of the same build and pushes me just as much as my first one, perhaps that's why we clicked the first time I met him.  He reminded me so much of my first.  This training buddy I have now however isn't a student so there's no risk of losing him to university.

Tonight, as I was cleaning up the club and throwing in the laundry, one of our Hulkies came by to pick up her running shoes.  She's a freshman at university and so this Monday she will be returning to her studies.  It was nice of her to stop in and say hi but our quick hi and bye turned into quite the lengthy conversation.  From eating clean, waiting for the right guy, to what life was like when I was a student, our conversation covered a lot.  At one point, I closed the main front doors and together we played fetch with my 3 four-legged friends. By the time she left it was well after midnight, about 12:40am.  It was sad to see her leave, I almost was tempted to hug her but different.  There goes another favoured Hulkie.
