Kicked off the September Hulk's Fitness Challenge -- three minutes to as many goblet squats as you can. At 3 minutes, you've got 180 solid seconds to pump out as many goblet squats as possible. Goblet squats are usually done with either a kettlebell or a dumbbell -- that's the "goblet" in the goblet squat -- but we've decided not to use any kind of weight for this particular challenge. My workout buddy and I figure that if you do one squat a second that will give you 180 squats but of course you may start off doing them fast but won't be able to continue at that rate. Knock off some seconds, say a solid 20 seconds, and means you'll pump out 160 squats. Our goal is to get 150-160 goblet squats within the 3 minute appointed time.
With it being the first day of the challenge, I had originally wanted to take my turn at the challenge today and make some kind of bench mark for others to aim for. However, I went running today and my run was 9.5kms. It was a good run but in between fiddling with my music during it and my earphones repetitively falling out of my ears, it was a distracted run and my pacing results proved it. My aim to keep my pacing under 5:20mins/km but with my best kilometre being a successful 5:00mins exact and my worst being 5:49mins, my pacing per kilometre averaged out to be 5:24mins. Four seconds over... I wasn't impressed with myself.
One of my former sponsors visited me today at Hulk's and saw me running earlier today so he wanted to check up on me. When I told him about my run today and the disappointment with my pacing, he responded by saying "You just never give up...you know you're not getting younger". I seriously could have round robin kicked him in the head right then and there but instead I responded by saying "Why should I give up?! Just because I'm not getting younger doesn't mean I can't get better." Look at Tosca Reno, she's basically the role model for clean eating and it wasn't until she was 40 that she started getting healthy and fit. At age 50 she entered a fitness modelling show and strutted her stunningly fit, buff bod across the stage in a bikini. She's got a better body at age 50+ than her daughters at half her age, ponder that!
I'm 34 years old... ONLY 34 years old...so in the life and times according to Tosca, I still have 6 years to "play with" before I have to get serious about my health...hahaha. Ok, so perhaps that's not entirely true but when did 34 become the new 60?! Oh, that's right, it's when I stepped into Korea. And while in Canada and in the States many of their boxers are hitting their prime in the 30's, here the early 30's are when many of Korea's boxers step out of the ring and retire. Forget that, I say. Age is all in your head and I for one refuse to follow any stereotypical age-related norms. I for one will be the first to admit I'm going to go as long and as strong as I can for however long I can. I'm like a bottle of wine, I only get better with age.
[OK, maybe that was cheesy but I thought it'd be a cute ending to this entry.]
