As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

A Flipside Fitness Petition for YOU... Tuesday, July 3

9 out of 10 times a cute little puppy will get you every time so I’m milking the use of our Flipside Fitness mascot – Pyen Chi Bear – to get your attention here.

Recently I was asked to help raise funds to send a recently adopted dog home to his family that is leaving Korea.  I messaged back that I’d donate money, I am glad to help especially because it was one of my lovely ladies of Flipside Fitness who asked me, but then I started to really think about it.  Everyone wants to help this beautiful dog but why do so many people not want to help themselves?!  And this isn’t the first time I’ve thought this.  I continually see people trying to petition this or that to help improve the health and welfare of this dog or that dog, but who petitions for them?

Why is it so hard to get people to donate a couple of bucks for our gift of appreciation – something that clearly benefits us as a group -- but yet they so eagerly donate money to send someone else’s dog home?!

So, back to my question, who petitions for them… Flipside Fitness does.

It’s in the weekly meetings with sponsors, it’s in working our magic with the boxing club manager so he lets us train early, it’s in our meetings and constant contact with Adidas so they keep the equipment coming, it’s in setting up the social events and getting rides for you.  It’s there in having to keep the boxing club and trainer’s weekends schedule free and it’s in the laundry duty we do and the late at night, down-on-all-fours, floor washing we do to keep Coach Kim not regretting his decision to let us train there.

I know so many of you are animal lovers and that’s great but before you start running off trying to help the pup down the street please stop and think about your own health and welfare.  How are you helping yourself?!  Just like that puppy is important, so are you but I don’t honestly think many of you really understand this.

You are more important than you know it and so is your health.  Health is a mind, body and soul state of mind.

The sole purpose of Flipside Fitness is to make Cheonan a more female-fitness friendly city, providing the women of Cheonan and surrounding areas with positive and healthy alternatives to things like hitting the bar scene and staying home.  More importantly though, sure this may be a health group but in reality it is so much more than that.  Flipside Fitness is a source of “familyship” for many, which is so important considering about 95% of you are not originally from Korea.  However, Flipside Fitness is only as great as those who get involved, so get involved.  Sure hitting the sandbag and pulling a gym nasty at boxercise may not be for everyone but there’s so many more ways to get involved.  Every month we host social events – chances for you ladies to have fun outside of the ring.  Weekly Flab to Fab Fitness Challenges are posted here on our Flipside Fitness Facebook page and members are constantly posting pics and tips so jump in and make your voice known.

So go ahead, donate money to send that beautiful dog to it’s much deserved home but don’t forget to do something for yourself too. You’re just as much deserving of a place to call home so get involved and let Flipside Fitness help make Korea feel more like home for you.

Flipside Fitness is for YOU, about YOU but what are YOU going to do about it?!

Your new blog layout is extremely hard to read.

Hi Anonymous,
There, I changed the font and font colour, any better?

It's a bit better (that pale pink(?) was rough!), but it's the picture in the background that makes it hard to read. Anything on black is harder enough, but add a picture and it's just really distracting.

Is there a way to make the picture a banner at the top or along the sides instead of a background?

Hi Anonymous,
Still trying to work out this new blogger template. I think if I change the template it'll mean having to change all the colours and whatnot... not fun, I'll try though.
