As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Nothing Short of a Terrific, Too Cool Tuesday... Tuesday, August 13

Breakfast with the Lovely L was a sweet way to start what would quickly become a very, very, VERY -- all caps needed here -- VERY FABULOUS day.

With just a sports bra and training pants on, I leaned out the window to yell at whomever was hollering my name out on the street. Turns out it was my sponsor; oh gosh, he wanted to take Snickers and I out for lunch.  I should note he's never been to my house and I didn't even know he knew where we lived.

After three years of stopping Korean private tutoring lessons, who should I run into while at restaurant I was intended to even go to -- my Korean teacher!!! It was super cool to finally introduce her to the guy I once used to write about in my Korean diary homework -- Snickers ;)  I've come a long way since our last tutoring time together so I was really proud to tell her that I'm still boxing but have taken it to a whole new unexpected level -- we've opened our own boxing club and it's the biggest in Korea.  She had a good laugh at my club tank top that I sported, noting to me "Hey I didn't teach you THAT Korean!!!"  The phrase "Don't make me angry" is in both English and Korean but the Korean is slang and kind of has a troublemaker tone to it -- Koreans always get a good kick out of seeing our tank tops and she was no different.

Planning on stepping back into the ring, officially, after talking it over with my sponsor who continually questions me if I am.  His questioning is more like him hinting that he wants me to fight so now plans to confront Junior Mint about my boxing license and deal with KBC are definitely a must-do now.  I had agreed to a fight actually, to take place at the start of September but it recently fell through.  I knew it wasn't a 100% guaranteed because they were trying to find an opponent but they wanted me on the fight card.  I've been training for it though and consequently have put on an added 1kg of muscle in the past week.  Tomorrow I have my weekly weigh-in so let's see how that goes.

Found myself in a street race -- my opponent, some random Morning mini car against my Gangsta Gotti scooter.  I scored the win but should note I cheated -- drove a bit on the side walk and then went through a red light. He chased me all the way to the boxing club and it wasn't until I saw the side of his car that I realized I knew him, well of him. The side of his car read " LeeChard Hair" which is only the company that owns our club's building floor, oh gosh.  He got out, followed me right into the boxing club and said, "You must be Coach Amy... I thought you were a pro boxer not a pro racer."  Talk about a strong first impression that I a sure he will never forget -- good. Well, ordinary was never a label I cared to sport.

I did TWELVE!!!! My initial number was 9 and now I am up to 12 -- 12 pull-ups!!! I have two more weeks to get up to 18 but the real thrill will come when my partner-in-crime, helping to represent the above 30's group, Mr. Jung returns to training and I show him I can beat him by one!!!

Was told I have a "good chest" by the Double D Bulldog, in which I had no idea on how to react or respond to that comment so I looked down at my chest and said, "thanks?!".  This comment came about after we trained together today.  We worked on chest yesterday so I told him I was in pain because of it.  We then sat on the large transport truck tire, talking about the various bodies walking around the club and I noted that out of all the people training here I thought he had by far the best body -- he's very balanced which many others aren't and he's freakishly strong for his size.

Rocked out 200 ab leg lift crunches today on the gymnastic rings -- B.R.U.T.A.L!!!  I totally blame the Double D Bulldog too for this because after already doing my 5 rounds of 20 reps each (100 reps total) right before he came in for training.  He teased me and said he didn't believe me, insisting that I was supposed to wait to train with him thus I have to do it all over again.  So that's what I did.  Trained abs with the Double D Bulldog and established a set weekly routine for him and I to follow:
  • Monday -- arms & shoulders
  • Tuesday -- back & abs
  • Wednesday -- free pick
  • Thursday -- chest
  • Friday -- legs & abs

Reached a new record, ANOTHER new record -- 6 new members in 20 minutes!!!  Shortly after 9pm, after we let Trainer Thor go for the evening and had written off the evening as going into slow mode, we suddenly had a wave of random new people come in to join our club. Two of them were foreign guys whom I had met on Sunday and killed with a leg exercise, another two I had talked to over a week ago, one was my hair designer and another had heard about me and brought in a Korean/English translator to help her.  It was pretty cool actually, the fact that someone had purposely brought a long someone to help her translate for us because she didn't think I spoke Korean at first but she really wanted to join my business -- I was actually very flattered.  The two that I spoke to over a week ago, two girls, are very fun and giddy so I'm loving them already.  I can already see them being all buddy-buddy with two other giddy, super cool gals who are exact replicas of them.

One of my members had her last training session at Hulk's tonight.  She'll be moving out of town and already takes an hour route to come out to train as it is.  Both Snickers and I were really sad to see her go because she's so fun-loving and such a contagious positive energy to train with.  I joked with her and told her, "I wish all the rotten foreigners would leave and let the good ones stay in Cheonan" but the truth of the matter is I don't really know any rotten foreigners.  It's hard with the foreigners though.  Many of them stay so short in Korea and while others have the mentality that this is a paid vacation so they don't really let themselves get attached or committed to things beyond having a good time and waiting for the next chapter in life.  I'm very thankful for those who have stayed more than a year and who have made Cheonan a home at least for the time that they're here because their thinking is so much different than the "fly-byes" as we've come to call them.

Our Lady Ghini is back in the shop... again... so Snickers had no way of getting home tonight, that is until he said, "Hey let's drive Gangsta Gotti together!"  He thought it was a good idea but I know his weight plus my weight would be a bad thing.  I don't drive Gotti, I fly Gotti but tonight, with both of us him, we squished Gotti and nearly chocked him to death.  If scooters could talk, I tell ya, he'd be cursing our names and saying many not-so-nice, make-your-ears-bleed things but he got us home safe and sound.  Thanks Gotti!

Had a late night date with Snickers.  We had just arrived home when he grabbed my hand and said, "Let's go date time!"  I hadn't showered, still had my sweaty training clothes on and even a spritz of body spray couldn't mask how nasty I felt but he insisted.
