As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

A Foreshadowing Party... Saturday, September 28

Two more days till the end of September, one more day until the end of Flipside Fitness and tonight marked the last event for Flipside Fitness.  It was only fitting that we'd go out with a bang but I wasn't expecting that bang to come from Gangsta Gotti, my scooter.  Nor was I expecting that bang to be my cherished ring being driven over.  I had already been at Hulk's, setting up and preparing the food, when I realized I left my phone and candles back at home.  I raced home and, while on route back, my ring fell off and then my scooter decided to tell me it was out of gas via shutting off as I crossed a busy street.  There were no choking sounds, no hints leading up to it dying, it just died -- right smack dab in the middle of the street.  Gotti dying on me was quite the 'perfect' followup from having my ring mushed.  My scooter lock was at the club so I decided to continue on via pushing it -- not an easy task considering the ups and downs of the road.

Arrived to one of my guests sitting outside the club doors, nice and super early.  It was a good thing she had showed up early too, a fabulous thing, because while I raced around trying to clean myself up from the last 15 minute improvised workout (aka pushing my scooter), she helped continue setting up the snacks and candles.

Tonight was the last Flipside Fitness event and it went nothing as planned.

I showed up sweaty and wet from the rain, all but two guests showed up more than fashionable late, we had the pleasant surprise of an additional guest showing up that wasn't on our guest list, we only played one game I had planned, and we ended up not one movie but three... three movies!!!  Our party started at 7pm and ended close to 3am.

Initially I thought about showing super girly, ultra sappy romantic movies but we were quick to note we wanted a movie that would scare us.  The first movie, The Jacket, didn't really do it for us so we tuned into another one -- Don't Be Afraid.  The movie was ok but I think we were more afraid of each other trying to scare one another.  The biggest scare of the night though came about twenty minutes into this movie, when we heard a tap on the club's front door.  One single tap was followed by another and than a multitude of taps was followed by someone rattling the entire 14 foot glass door.  We all screamed and then I had to be the brave one to walk through the dark club to see what the heck was at the door.  Turns out it was a neighboring shop owner.

Our party of 8 was made up of quite the diverse group with our youngest guest being 16 and me being 33, some guests being students while others being teachers, and all but two guests being active Hulk members.  I've trained with all of them at one point though.  We had a good mix of Koreans and non-Koreans and even though some of my Korean guests didn't speak much English, communication and having a good time was certainly not an issue.

It was Flipside Fitness' last event but it was almost like it worked out to be an intro event into what I have planned for Hulk's because of the fact it was because of Hulk's that 5 of my guests even heard of Flipside.  I had anticipated more Flipside Fitness ladies showing up and was disappointed that they hadn't but then I wasn't.  I was quick to forget all about others not showing up because if they had, it maybe wouldn't have been as awesome as it was -- it'd be different.  It had played out really well and it definitely was one of my favourite Flipside Fitness events because of what it foreshadowed for me, for us at Hulk's.
