Snickers came into work today and I'm not too sure why. I suspect it was because one of the following reasons:
a. He loves me, isn't that enough of a reason?!
b. He loves Hulk's and our Hulk's, that's a pretty good reason.
c. He's become a true workaholic like me -- he eats, sleeps and breaths boxing and Hulk's.
d. He felt bad about leaving the country next week for business and wanted to get in a last dose of Hulk's.
e. He knew being there meant he'd get out of me expecting him to clean the house.
f. His buddies cancelled plans on him.
g. He wanted to make sure I trained, he is after all my coach.
h. ALL OF THE ABOVE
When he arrived, he greeted me with this massive bouquet of spinach and it was beautiful, seriously. I've never seen such long stemmed, full leafed spinach before. He then headed out for a bit, returned around 7pm, and stayed until closing. I suspect perhaps answer h, all of the above, was behind him coming to club but an additional answer arose as we chatted.
Now that we have the full weekend off and each of us has kept our individual extra day off, Snickers and I have decided that on our individual day off we're going to come to the club during the busy hours -- 7pm to 9/10pm. For Snickers, having him manage the entire club during our busy peek by himself on Wednesdays is a bit much and I have been coming in on Wednesdays to help him out. For me, managing Free Train Friday is much easier than Snickers managing a Wednesday by himself in that I don't have to train everyone. Free Train Friday, as the title suggests, is a day where our Hulkies train at their own free will. I still have selected Hulkies I do train on Friday, like newbies and specific members I have "appointments" with. Snickers' day off is Friday and although Fridays are Free Train Fridays, we decided that we're going to make him available for any of our members who want to do padwork to be able to do so during these appointed hours. We decided upon this because we do have a strong faithful crowd of guys that love their padwork time with him. I texted one of them tonight, telling him that Snickers was there if he wanted to come in for padwork. He literally showed up 17 minutes later and brought others.
I suspect that on Fridays Snickers will stay much later than 9/10pm and tonight he stayed until closing. We were expecting our Sushi Crew to come in for training around 11pm so I started early on my own training; I started at roughly 10:20pm. I expected by the time my padwork was finished that they would have arrived. They never arrived so my padwork continued. It felt as if my padwork never finished. Did a full 10 rounds of padwork which was just brutal, especially considering most only get 3-4 rounds. It was more mentally draining than anything though because Snickers has been really ripping apart my boxing -- my punches, boxing stance, body movement, head movement, foot work, you name it he's been putting it under his microscope and dissecting it. I really can't complain though. I keep on making reference to the humble pie I'm eating but it's been doing wonders for my boxing -- things are starting to click. The best advice I ever got from Junior Mint was to make my body like a marionette -- stay loose, disconnect your body so that you can stay relaxed, and hit your opponent with your body weight and not just muscle. And recently the best advice I've got from Snickers is to open up my stance, keep my lines clean and over exaggerate my body movement so that I can hit my opponent harder with my body.
It was a busy day at Hulk's for me, a very busy Free Train Friday, and a very awesome one and it ended with quite the intense boxing training for me... woozers. I've been so focused on my running these days that I have kind of made my boxing an accessory to it. Not anymore. Tonight's training was really intense, very gruelling and very mentally and physically draining but it definitely sparked something in me and it reminded me just how much I do love boxing. Sorry running, but you simply can't compete with hitting the sandbag and nailing that new combo.
