As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Health Choices us 30yr Old Women Need to do, Apparently... Friday, March 7

According to Women's Health Magazine, there are 30 health choices every woman needs to make by time she reaches the big 3-0, so I thought I would list them here and comment as to whether or not I've done them.

1.  Find a Workout You Actually Enjoy

Hello boxing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2.  Drink More Water
This is definitely a two-sided problem for me.  Sometimes I drink too much and consequently don't eat enough to keep my body fuelled and then there are days when I don't drink enough.

3.  Quit Smoking (or Don't Start in the First Place)
Never started.

4.  Stand More
Apparently standing TOO much is my problem.  I wear runners all the time at work, so bad footwear isn't a problem, but lately because of the cold and my livedo reticularis, I'm supposedly suppose to be off my feet and with them elevated.

5.  Find the Best Birth Control for You (if Any)
Turns out the constant demands on my body from my boxing and having to constantly drop mad weight with a month's notice for fights keeps me happily reproductively-challenged.

6.  Drink Only in Moderation
I think I drink maybe one or two glasses a wine a year but there are days when I seriously contemplate "taking up drinking" for the pure disconnection it'd give me from work.  It's work 24/7 in my head.

7.  Get Health Insurance
Definitely am insured from head to toe, with my nose apparently being worth at least two grand for every break.

8.  Love Your Body
I wouldn't say I love my body as am not at the point where I am striving to take it but I am surely a lot more comfortable and confident with it now compared to where I used to be.  It took me a long time to get here and now my love for my body comes in knowing that I'm responsible for it and I'm making it -- better than yesterday.

9.  Schedule Regular Friend Dates
I have regular weekly coffee dates with a good friend of mine and then on the weekends I have Date Nights with my best friend, my husband Snickers.

10. Learn How to Cook at Least a Few Truly Delicious Healthy Dishes
Have surely checked this one off as successfully completed.

11. Find a Doctor You Love, or At Least One You'll Listen To
Hello Metro Hospital here in Cheonan.  Even the nurses there are familiar with us.  Not sure if I really appreciate their "what's broken now?" joke every time they greet us... hahaha.

12. Learn Your Family's Health History
Picked up on the importance of this when my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer although I must admit the fear surrounding it has made me a procrastinator regarding learning more.

13. Practice Mindfulness Whenever Possible
I must admit I have my daily little rituals to keep my mind at peace and I definitely lean on my running for "me time".  Recently I've been taking Wednesdays off and instead of meeting up with friends (with the exception of last week), I really try to make them me days -- a day for me to just enjoy some peace and quiet.

14. Do Regular Health Checks
Ya, this is a problem of mine in that I don't like hospitals and consider them to be places that foster illnesses and spread them around.  I really try not to visit the doctors and when I do it's to see a natural doctor who uses herbs and natural remedies.

15. Have More Sex
Ummm... wow, what do I say here except for don't worry, I'm looked after here.

16. Have Safe Sex
As supposed to dangerous sex?!  I know they mean condoms here but I am married thus I only have one between-the-sheets buddy and being reproductively-challenged rules out the need for a net to catch the "fishies".

17. Get Your Vitamins From Your Food as Much as Possible
I used to take a multi-vitamin but beyond the protein powder shake I have once every day or two, I really lean on my clean eating and real foods to supply me with all I need.  Mother Nature knows best so I use her to hook me up.

18. Take Care of Your Mental Health
I think one of the things I've really tried to be conscious about with regards to keeping my life stress free is to try hard to only associate myself with positive people who lift me up and those whom I think help better me.

19. Swear Off Extreme Dieting
I don't diet; I eat clean.  I think the only thing beyond clean eating that I sometimes do is a bit of carb-cycling.  It's not a frequent thing I do and the reasons I do it now as supposed to before are different.  These days I use a big of carb-cycling for my half marathon training.  On days before my long runs, I enjoy a nice high carb day to fuel me for the upcoming long run.  Gotta have those carbs ready to get me through a couple of hours of hitting the pavement!

20. Limit TV Time
I've never really been a fan of TV but will admit to liking coming home late at night, after a long day of training and coaching, and flopping on the couch for an hour of TV.  It's more so the laying down and doing nothing that attracts me to this routine.

21. Ditch The Food Guilt
I can't say I have much food guilt anymore considering how much my eating and taste buds have changed.  I used to crave sweets like they were going out of style but now, because I've replaced sweets with fruit, often eating sweets like candy give me a tummy ache.  My cravings used to include chocolate, sweets and ice cream but have since evolved into fruit and bread.  I absolutely love bread.  Consequently, because my cravings aren't exactly considered bad foods in comparison, I don't feel guilty.

22. Protect Your Heart
My heart is health-happy because I eat clean, live a very physically active life, surround myself with positive people, and don't associate myself with drama or petty people.

23. Avoid Harmful Chemicals
This is one that I am always trying to tweek because I really would like to live a much more natural lifestyle without becoming one of those overly-protective health fanatics that ends up bringing issues and problems upon themselves for quickly ruling out things or labelling them as dangerous or harmful.

24. Get Your Flu Shot
Ya... guilty for not doing that.

25. Actually Stay Home When You're Sick
I would if I did get sick.

26. Get Outside Regularly
Inside Hulk's feels like outside... hahaha.  All jokes aside, I do get outside a lot.  These days I've been running a lot and have even been running to work.  I've got 3 four-legged friends that get me outside on a daily bases and we try to take them up the mountain late at night.

27. Fight Less With Your Partner
I didn't think I fought much with Snickers anyways and once we got married the frequency of such already limited fights really decreased.  I think most of our previous fights stemmed from our own insecurities but getting married definitely brought about a sense of security for us, one that overrode those personal insecurities.

28. Disconnect Regularly
I must admit that this is my biggest weakness, my inability to disconnect.  It's hard though, so very hard.  In addition to missing my friends and family in Canada sooooo very much, I also manage the Hulk's Boxing Facebook group and company page.  I am constantly getting emails from members, potential members, suppliers, and so many other associated with me running a business.  And there is my homepage, I try to update it everyday.  I used to write my homepage for my friends and family back in Canada but now it's really become a way for me to dissect, digest and reflect back on my day, on my life.  I no longer really write it for anyone else but me.

29. Log 7-8 Hours of Sleep a Night
I really do try to get my beauty rest and plenty of it but now that I can't take my afternoon naps like before I've had to be more conscious about it and go to bed a bit earlier.

30. Forgive Yourself for Health Slip ups

I can't say I get all down in the dumps when I slip-up with my clean eating or training but must admit that I do put forth an extra effort to bounce back.  I used to have the bad habit of realizing a slip and then writing off the whole day as one big free-for-all.  However, I have become more consciously aware that I used to do this and now I am much more active with catching myself before I do it.  Instead of writing the entire day off and waiting for tomorrow, a fresh new start, I try to bounce back that same day.  Sometimes this means using carb-cycling to clean up a slip-up with my eating and sometimes it means a late, late night run.
